What travellers are saying
- AlohaCDT3 contributionsSao Torpes Beach and surf break is a dream. The main pick is in front of the small bridge. Ideal surf spot for beginners and intermediate. Not so good for surfing in the summer months: too small waves, not much to play with. But very good for student paddle-boarders.
Kalux Restaurant, 1st one you see when you get there, used to be a cool hang-out for surfers and student-surfers.
But Kalux, the man himself, is now too busy running other restaurants in Sines, the nearby town, and this jewell by the beach is now ran by an awful person: Karina.
I'm guessing she's related to the owner because the staff is very obviously scared of her (and baffled at how she treats customers).
Stay on the beach for sandwiches or enjoy good foods in the other 5 bars and restaurants, all just a bit south on the 1.5km stretch of the same road.
Best food is at Art & Sal and its neighboor restaurant (sorry I forgot the name of the neighbor, but very good too, same parking lot), beach right in front with cool no-surf zone for kids.
Enjoy!
Aloha to all!

The fort where his father worked and probably where Gama was born. His statue looks majestic since it’s sea-facing in the old city at a height.
There is plenty of parking (at least in winter) as well as eateries. After lots of tours in Algarve and Lisbon, this is a nice place for relaxing. Just roam around the old narrow city streets and look at the vast ocean.Written 22 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Enjoy narrow streets, views from the fort towards the bay and curvy roads which will take you to the Beach.Written 17 June 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Andrew B3 contributionsHoused in the birth home of Vasco de Gama, this collection of local history telling the story of Sines is fascinating, and well worth a visit.Written 25 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Małgorzata BWarsaw, Poland2,405 contributionsThe beach itself is not large, but it has all you need: showers, toilets and life guards on duty. Water is warm. Good for swimming. And Vasco da Gama is watching you from the hill 😀.Written 26 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ronaldsoleLoule, Portugal142 contributionsThe art gallery is housed in the basement of twin stone-clad buildings that also house the city library and cater for performance arts. Although the buildings stand impressively against the horizon, many of the lower fascia slabs are in need of repair.
Entrance to the gallery is through the library, whose staff were exceptionally helpful. The gallery halls are spacious and attractive. I confess that the conceptual art on display in October 2015 did not appeal to us. But the washrooms were superb.Written 16 October 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a fail-safe place to get to, the parking is right next to the beach and there is a small sandy slope to get down. Maybe a bit tedious if travelling with a family but not impossible (seen one picture).
The views are immense, I kept trying to take pics of it all but i feel i wasn’t capturing what my eyes were seeing: the endlessness of the beach, the waves, the sand... it was so beautiful.
The sand is pebble-like and different to anything we’d seen in Portugal so far.
We lay down next to the shore and all you could hear were the waves, honestly it was one of our fave moments; absolute bliss.
We were lucky and got perfect weather but perhaps it’s a beach that won’t be as nice on a windy day. Suggestion would be to check the weather before heading there and take snacks! The restaurant there was closed and there is nothing close by.
10/10 (not even the pictures do it justice).Written 15 September 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
