Aquileia, with its immense archaeological site and its Patriarchal Basilica, is an artistic and historical treasure trove.

There's a small additional fee to enter the crypt but to view the ruins and the Basilica are all free.

It is really nice to climb the tower, you get rewarding views of the surroundings and you can see some artifacts in the ground level.
Afterwards if you are fit enough there are about 130 uneven circular steps up to the belfry which offers extensive views of the surrounding countryside.

You cant walk amongst the pillars but a great view from the park at the side of it and a chance to imagine what this old Roman forum was actually like.

Located just behind (east of) the forum ruins, this site is very accessible - far more than in Rome itself.
