‘Schloss’ seems to exaggerate the gravitas of Blutenburg. What stands today is more in the manner of a peaceful country estate than a fortress but it wasn’t always so. It may have been better at keeping people in than out, none more dangerous than Lola Montez.
Today the Schloss fulfils some role in children’s libraries that is, frankly, beyond me. Doesn’t matter, the moat remains, the chapel is a thing of beauty and you can wander through the courtyard at will. An interesting restaurant, Schlossschänke Blutenburg, operates at the side. The menu during my visit was duck and out of respect for the dozens of them in the moat, I went hungry.
The Schloss is a sunny-day must-do. You can safely cycle the 12k's there if you are that crazy. S2 train to Obermenzing, bus 143 stops right outside.
