Ground floor only open when we visited so did not see the displays of armour etc. The ground floor has displays about Drake's ships and discovery of Hispaniola and about the history of the early plantations, the slave trade and early life on the island and plantations. Entrance fees have doubled since the 2017 Lonely Planet guide.

It was an interesting stop that was provided as opart of our day tour. It was a very short tour inside, maybe 5 minutes, but the lady inside that gave us information as we walked through was very friendly. Yes, there are mosquitos and other insects in amber like in the movies. So cool. The gift shop is also very nice, but very expensive.

A great tour! We were able to go in and physically see the cigars being made. All the staff were so nice and our tour guide was so knowledgeable about everything. We were able to smoke a cigar and they had [their brand of] coffee in the lounge. 10/10 would recommend!

The Columbus Lighthouse (Faro a Colón) is a massive concrete memorial to the famous explorer. Built-in the shape of a cross and capable of projecting a bright cross-shaped beam that can be seen for miles, it also houses a mausoleum and museum.

It is one of the larger tributes to Christopher Columbus you can find in Santo Domingo. The massive memorial was inaugurated just before the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America. Inside the concrete building, you’ll find a mausoleum said to hold the remains of a famous explorer, as well as a museum, several libraries, and exhibitions from different countries across the Americas and the world.

On any given day, you can see a wide range of indigenous cultural artifacts from around the Americas exhibited in the various chambers of the museum. The ‘lighthouse’ is perhaps best known for its powerful light display projecting into the night sky.

Very nice tour that is ran in groups consistently as I stopped to utilize the restroom my group had moved on. The one stop tour will explain how to make cigars and then the natural stone that is blue turned into various jewelry items. The rum tasting was good as you go on the tour. The vanilla is what I went there for! The vanilla is so pure and real so I stock up on mamajuana and vanilla its great for your health. Cacao Tea was something I taste and it was not bad. The chocolate was so soft and fresh! This was a great tour!!

Very interesting museum with good exhibits. Explains all the details of how amber is formed, mined and all the different colours and what the amber can contain. There is even some fake amber. You can view pieces of amber through microscopes to see the plants/insects inside it.

This is a beautiful jewelry store and more. The displays are nicely laid out and the quality of the goods is very high. Different kinds of gold and the prices are reasonable. There is high security and the staff was helpful and friendly. Very impressed with this business.

Good chocolate samples and merchandise to buy. They also give a short, but informative, complimentary tour of the coffee process.

Very instructive and well presented museum. It provides interaction with the children and the opportunity for them to be curious. I also enjoyed some of the expositions the museum holds.

1/21/24: My wife booked this tour for me, since I like rum. I found the tour to be very educational and entertaining. The video was pretty good, and the hostess was engaging. I enjoyed visiting the store before and after the tour. The rum sampling and displays areas were pretty cool. I ended up buying four bottles of rum, and was happy that I was able to sample three of them.

A must for all visitors to Santo Domingo. A tragic episode of Dominican history that should be known in order to avoid it's repetition. Also, a homage to the tena of thousands of victims from a dictator and his regime.

This was a last minute fit it in to our day thing. Boy, I’m so glad we did. One of the highlights of our DR trip. Marc who is a Frenchman now settled is running it with his wife. History starts from how Taino people arrived to the island and takes it all the way to how they were all killed. Organized by “scene”, each exhibit is meticulously designed and narrated ( several languages) pace is perfect ( English was around 45 minutes) quality, history and details were second to none. It is right off the exit on DR-3 the main highway. $12 adults and $6 children. My wife who is not a “museum type” loved it. Our high schooler as well as elementary school child also were very very impressed.
    Just go !!!!!
