What travellers are saying
- GLKLLCIOUnited States1,192 contributionsTake my advice, go at peak bloom. Do not wait. It will not be as good and probably not worth the effort if you're too early or too late. Japan-guide dot com and other sites have the cherry blossom forecast so you need to watch that carefully. Weather patterns are not the same as in the past these days so it seems like the bloom is starting earlier and earlier lately.
See the other reviews, they're spot on. It is not easy to get to so I'd get a bus or a car. The views are great but you'll be seeing most of the sakura trees from a distance. There are a couple of the varieties that you can see close up. If you want pictures you want a zoom lens. If you want to get close up you'll need a serious telephoto or macro lens. A 70-200, 70-300, 28-300 is good for Nikon cameras.
There are lots of little shops with gifts and restaurants. I suggest trying the "kakinohazushi" vinegar sushi. The mackerel is not something that most foreigners can handle but if you can you will never forget the experience.Written 29 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Either way is an effort. You can skip the cab part and walk to the temple but it is a 30min straight up climb --more effort.
But the 7th century temple has the second largest wooden structure, the Zaodo, in Japan after the Great Buddha Hall at Todai-ji.
Parking option looks limited in Yoshino. There is a car park onwned by a shop before you reach the Y-junction in front of the temple. It is probably the best spot to park your car. I visited in a weekday afternoon, literally only 5 visitors including three of us. No one from the shop really came out when I parked my car. But I could image during cherry blossoms season, you may not be allowed to park there.Written 28 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It also has two screen panels used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in display.
Besides the significant historical status, it also has the infamous “一目千本" sight during cherry blossom season (means one sight with a thousand cherry blossom trees). Although we visited in September, I can imagine how splendid it would when I looked out into the mountain in the view platform.
Its entrance is 5 mins walk from Kinpusen hi, but could be very easily missed. Look for a stone Tori on your left right after the Tonan-in temple.Written 29 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Not crowded at all. Worth a visit.Written 14 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- The Weak Knee TravelerSingapore, Singapore11,767 contributionsThis is great viewpoint looking across to the lower part of the mountain where you can see buildings surrounded by sakura. There's also a mini tea house up here where you can have a cup of tea and enjoy the view.Written 14 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kenlong CBangkok, Thailand295 contributionsA visit to this temple was like visiting a secret garden in a fairy tale where the bright flowers and sakuras bloom and overhang like weeping willows near a big pond.April seems to be the best month to visit this lovely place!Loved it!Written 3 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - c2chenSingapore, Singapore285 contributionsAs you walk down the mountain towards Yoshino station, this temple is hard to miss as it is just beside the road. What catches the eye is the dome shape structure of this shrine. The cherry trees were in full bloom in the temple courtyard when we visited. A relatively small temple, it does not take long for a visit.Written 23 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ctunaGreen Valley, IL19 contributionsLovely place. No one else there on the morning I visited. Lovely walk down a broad path through maple trees. This place must be spectacular in autumn when the leaves turn.Written 28 July 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - The Weak Knee TravelerSingapore, Singapore11,767 contributionsVisited this temple on the way down. Was attracted by the structure as it was circular at the top level. - The Weak Knee TravelerSingapore, Singapore11,767 contributionsAs i took 2 buses up to near the top, this was the 1st shrine 1 saw in the mountain. It is not crowded but interesting to visit. There is a toilet stop near it as well.Written 14 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Morten GWestern Norway, Norway49 contributionsAre you after some really nice photos, this is the place.
Especially when you are here during Sakura flowering.
The hole Valley is full of them, and this is said to be one of the most famous spots in all of Japan to view Sakura trees.
The area is also full of temples, small restaurants, Onsens in Ryokans that I can recommend everyone to try whatever time of the year.
Walking to the top can take a while, so if your someone that dont enjoy walking for a long time, this might not be a trip for you.Written 6 April 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The cabin is small and the ride short. Having said this, it did provided me a convenient ride down to Yoshino Station from Yoshinoyama, easing of my tired legs after the 5 or more km walk instead of having to walk another few km downhill to the station.Written 5 April 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
