What travellers are saying
- Outofdodge_10Santa Fe, NM1,351 contributionsThis church isn't as grand as some others, but it is intimate and the architecture is gorgeous. It was used for filming of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, but that isn't the reason to visit. Forza d'Agro is such a beautiful little mountain town with beauty around every corner and gorgeous views. Cathedral Maria SS Annunziata e Assunta dates back to the 15th century, but like many buildings in Italy, it was badly damaged by an earthquake in the mid-1600's. It was rebuilt only to be damaged again by an earthquake in the late-1600's. The limestone building had its next incarnation in 1707. It's a lovely town and a lovely church (and not the only beautiful church).Written 26 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WitchyYorkStrensall, UK999 contributionsWhat a gorgeous setting for a church. The walk up the stairs and the courtyard at the top, give way to a lovely church inside. Not surprisingly used in the Godfather trilogy for filming.Written 14 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Graham GLivingston, UK129 contributionsNice wee place. I wouldn't recommend a visit just to see this, but if your in Forza D'aggro then you may as well pop in for a look. Doesn't take long to look around.Written 16 May 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Giorgio GWashington DC, DC1,378 contributionsOne can reach Forza d'Agro easily from the coast. Once there, it is best to park your car for a small fee and walk around. You will find a couple of fine chutches on the way. You can then walk all the way the the Norman Castle. Once completely uninhabited (1970's), it has slowly regained life. You can now see new constructions here and there. The sense of decay, however, is pretty apparent. Overallone of the most charming places in Sicily.Written 8 October 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AriannaBLund, Sweden419 contributionsI have visited this castle several times in my life. This is the second time I found it close.
About 15 years ago, we were lucky to find the grind opened and we could visit it in calm and peace.
After 15 years it is sad to see that nothing has changed.
The town had got some money from the region/other to invest in the small village around the castle, which is surrounded by old houses.
The whole place is picturesque and have incredibly high potential. It could be a pearl if that money would have been used properly! Instead, all the equipment is abandoned and it is not exactly safe to go around there, between buildings that are falling apart, electricity cables exposed and even cranes that are abandoned up there.
This should be one of the highest points of tourism of the area. The historical layers are unvealing in a breathtaking landscape/view and we have even a connection with one of the most famous Hollywood movies (The Godfather). The prerequisites for a big tourist attraction are all here.
Sadly, except the area closest to the first churches, there are no many tourists that dare to walk the ghost village and climb up reaching for the castle.
Its historical value is huge, as it is one of the first locations where one can find traces of the Greek colonization and where one can find traces of all the different people that have been leaving marks in Sicily.
The castle is a ruin, I am not sure how safe it'd be to enter it today. It seems that if you get hold of someone in the town, you probably can pay for a private access.
There is not much left but walls and ideas of how the magnificent castle was, but still it would take so little, with some AR/VR equipment and securing the place, to make this an unforgettable experience.
Today, it is mostly a disappointment. How can we not give value to such a place?Written 7 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Impressive with the rosary beads hanging in his hands left there as a thanks for a miracle or recovering from illness .... going inside it like a spooky movie I was by myself and as I walked in I felt every statue looking at me but it was all in my head lollll
After getting out of this Chiesa coming on a big piazza opening with a small playground, some swings and a slide great for kids area but in small amount coz it's a very small village with great breath taking views again ....coffee shops , restaurants , pharmacy, hotel all is there at Forza D ArgoWritten 7 January 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
