Towering over the rustically stunning city of Savoca, sits the beautiful Chiesa di San Nicolò. Many have visited the attraction because it is a filming location from Coppola's, The Godfather. But there is so much more to know. This beauty was built in the 13th Century. Beginning in the 1600's, each year on the last Sunday in August, elections were held of the Jurors and Mayor of Savoca. The church has gone through restorations and one was most likely due to the Sicily earthquake in 1693. There are ossuary crypts containing remains of hundreds of villagers from Savoca hidden under the walking surface of the small square surrounding the church. These burials dated back to the 14th Century. It's possible to take a tuktuk up the hill, but walking would be easy for many. The view from the top is breathtaking and the interior is sweet. I highly recommend visiting Savoca and also the Chiesa.

The views from Chiesa di San Nicolò (San Nicolò Church) are stunning. It sits atop the charming village of Savoca. If you are up for it, walk up the steep hill to the top and if you aren't, take a golf cart available for some Euro at the bottom. I was with someone who couldn't walk up, but we did walk down. This church is known for the location of the Michael Corleone's wedding to Apollonia in The Godfather, but it's so much more than that. It's a Roman Catholic church that was built in the 13th century. It was restored after damages from two earthquakes, one in 1693 and the other in 1908. The interior was adorned with Sicilian-Norman style frescoes.

Church where the Godfather Part 1 movie was taken. The town is amazing and very rural in feel. Great place to visit. Lots of history and paintings.

I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Very solemn church and location despite the "celebrity status" from the Godfather movie

A beautiful walk to a beautiful church, in a beautiful location with beautiful views! That alone should entice anyone, but the fact that this is THE church used in Godfather part one wedding filming is unmissable!

We walked up a steep hill to view this lovely little church on a scenic hillside. It was the church where Michael and Apollonia wedding was filmed in Godfather Part 1.

... well worth the visit. The enticing view of this church from the town's plaza draws one up the hill for a visit. The breathtaking view of the seashore and the beauty of this church make it worth it. If you don't want to walk, there is a cute three wheeled taxi you can hire for a very small amount to do the climb for you.

This church is the stand out attraction in Savoca. It is about a 10 minute walk up a hillside (there is also a guy who drives a small train vehicle and shuttles tourists up and down). It is very scenic, perched above the town. It is also famous as being the site of the wedding scene between Michael and Appollonia in the movie the The Godfather. A donation of 1 euro ie requested to go inside. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) is necessary.

Maria at bar Vitelli told me to go to the church as it was also in the godfather as the place Michael Corleone got married. What i did not expect was to hear the most angelic voice singing. I was confused as no one as the alter and looked up for a place the choir sat then realised it was Antonio who was at the ticked desk. Was worth going if only to hear his voice and normally i am not a fan of that singing, but it was so perfect it resonated

The Chiesa di San Nicolo /Santa Lucia is beautiful!
Unfortunately, an incident coloured my stay most negatively! Upon entrance my fellow travelers and I were asked for a voluntary donation, meaning that it was optional. Not having any cash on us, we entered anyway... The young man at the church's reception saw us later, when we had left the church, in fact several meters away. Passing us by, while sitting on his motorcycle, he yelled at us, saying that we, the French, are stingy! That we promise funds and never deliver! My fellow travelers and I are neither French nor stingy! We are heartbroken at this racist attack!
