Besides being expensive for what they offer (adults shouldn't have to pay at all since they are only accompanying their children), some of the animals shouldn't be allowed to be held there. I was only expecting farm animals. Other reviewers mentioned birds. I didn't see the birds (we didn't stay very long), but I saw two arctic foxes which were very stressed out in their small cage. One was crying the whole time. Very sad and I'm really surprised this is allowed in Iceland.

Small cages, poor conditions, rundown looking facilities. We arrived hoping to visit with Icelandic horses only to be informed that they had none. It got worse. Lots of small furry creatures in small cages, strong smell of urine, but what made us leave within 10 minutes of arriving was seeing the Artic Fox. In a small enclosure, clearly distressed, pacing nervously, no place to hide, it was extremely sad anyone would do this to an animal and call it a petting zoo. Please don't support this place, stay away.

Heart breaking to see how they are “recovering” the exotic birds. 3 macaws in a small cage, they almost look like roasting chicken because they are ripping their feathers off. I was wearing a jacket and could feel the cold wind from the entrance, can you imagine the cold these animals from the tropics were feeling?
They should send these birds to a country that at least have the appropriate weather and the somewhere with the appropriate facilities.
The fox was also the saddest things to watch.

Too many animals crammed into tiny enclosures. The cages were full of droppings, the smell was terrible and there were flies everywhere. Some animals had only dirty brown water to drink and the roofs were leaking into some of the animal enclosures.

I was utterly shocked to see such poor standards of animal welfare. They should keep fewer animals and learn to care for them better, or just close down entirely.

I wish I would have read the reviews before going. Horrible holding areas for the animals. Every species has too little space, nothing for them to stimulate themselves with. It feels like the animals are being treated like a piece of toy that is tossed from child to child. Not the place to teach your children to respect animals. I was saddened and angry to see how this place is being run.
And they have huge area to sell stuff…and it’s expensive to get in. The money is not being spent making the animal holding area better. Very disappointing!

Our family really enjoyed our week day visit here as part of our driving adventure on a reverse Golden Circle route (as suggested by a popular guidebook) from Reykjavik. While we didn't visit Iceland to pet baby rabbits and watch guinea pigs, we all had so much fun seeing them and the other animals. It made a nice first stop for our four year old to get some energy out and play in the comfortably warm cafe/mini-golf area, while the grown-ups enjoyed snacks at the cluster of tables. If memory serves me correctly, Slakki offered a good waffle with cream and jam and a cheese burger among other snacks. My son even enjoyed the sweet but small toddler play area in the cafe corner before attempting his version of miniature golf. The cute buildings and interesting animals outside (hopefully, they stayed warmer than we were) were worth the small admission and also made us feel as if we were experiencing a more pastoral part of the area outside of the city. We could see local Icelandic families showing the animals to their children, too. I was happy to see an Arctic fox up close and some rams. Outside, my son had fun with the push trucks and toys in between seeing the puppies, ducks, calf, and a few other types of animals. Slakki was approximately an hour and a half drive for us from Reykjavik. Make sure your navigation system is working well to reach it easily. In all, we were very glad to find a stop on the Golden Circle route we could truly enjoy with our son before venturing to the waterfalls and Pingvellir.

Nice Zoo for small children. They can hold on to a parrot, cats and rabbits
There is also a playground where they can play, small houses and cars

But the food is expensive and the portions are very small!!

I spent half a day at Slakki recently with my kids - we’ve been there before and the kids always love to visit Slakki. It is small and therefore very “manageable” (no-one will get lost there).
I’m torn between loving the proximity to the animals and wondering if some of them perhaps would be more comfortable if they had a bit more space. The fox for example seemed scared in his cage while the kittens loved to be cuddled by the kids in their house.
Slakki is suitable for kids of all ages but I would say it is especially aimed at the youngest kids - there are cute little playgrounds for toddlers and a cosy quiet place/shed for reading books.
Inside the mainhouse there is minigolf and some other games to play for the older kids.
The one thing I would not recommend is the restaurant part which I find overprized and lacking healthy choices.
My recommendation would be that you have a good meal somewhere close by before visiting and then take your time at Slakki - chances are your kids will not want to leave, at least not for a few hours.

First time coming to Slakki. Went with my wife and 2 years old daughter. She really loved the animals and got to hold kittens and bunnies. She really loves animals and was fascinating about everything. They have a lot of animals to show, both outside and inside. They also offer free mini-golf and other free activities for children. They have outside tables that you can eat your pick-nick or buy food from Slakki. I think It's better than húsdýragarðurinn in RVK and really worth the trip if you like to see a lot of cute animals.

We are so glad to have found this place. At first we just stopped to get a snack, but the super friendly family staff invited us to see their animals. But not only is it a petting zoo, there is also a mini golf course! It can be a quick stop, or you could stay there all day. My kids didn't look at their phone once in the entire time we were there. Even the teenager loved it! In addition, they have the best chicken nuggets we've ever had. I definitely recommend this place to be your next destination if you are near by.
