A great time diving at easter around Gulhi Island.Including a mini safari to Rasdhoo Atoll to see the mantas. Some really great dives with white tip and grey reef sharks, eagle rays, huge stingrays , morays, snapper ,jackfish and baracuda. And of coarse all the time together with the always enthusiastic, energetic and smilende Anees. What more could you need,PERFECT

It's the second time I visit Adventure Diving in Gulhi and Anees never disappoints.
Whether you want a relaxed dive or an Xtreme Adventure Diving,
He always tries to please you, even if you always ask for "bigger fish"....
On a small local island like Gulhi, any setback can become a problem as it happened last week when Anees ran out of ship overnight.
Fortunately, he has a lot of contacts and got in a few hours an even more comfortable boat with which we could enjoy the wonders under the sea.
With his knowledge of diving and his projects for the conservation of marine life in the Maldives Anees entertains you in and out of the water.
Anees really makes you enjoy the Adventure Diving !!

Anees, who runs Adventure diving at Gulhi, was not only a great diving instructor to our son, but also has become a very good friend. His knowledge of marine life, patience and commitment to marine conservation is absolutely marvelous.

It's hard to write an unbiased review after getting into one of the worst situations possible while diving - surfacing up in a channel with a strong current pushing you into the open ocean with the dive boat disappearing over the horizon. Having been diving since 2010, I have heard a number of similar stories that didn't end well. Fortunately, we didn't become the next Lonergans and did get rescued by a fishing boat but more on that in a bit.

Let's start with some positive things:

- Anees was very quick to respond to my facebook messages arranging the few days of diving for me and my friends

- On arrival, he was beaming with excitement and told us about many conservation projects he has been doing on the islands

- The dive shop looked better than I expected on a tiny island and most of the equipment was in very good, almost new condition

- Dive site briefing pictures he put together are of very good quality

- There is a very good quality video he put together highlighting some of the best diving moments (albeit the loud music on a loop got very annoying when we had to wait long times at the shop, more on that later)

Now, the things that ultimately led us to cut our diving short:

- The website is no longer online. When I originally emailed Anees asking for rates and availability, he didn't provide either and did not respond to my further emails. That's when I reached out to him via facebook and we made our plans. On arrival, he told me that his internet was disconnected so you might have a hard time getting a hold of him.

- I asked him specifically if he has the capacity to do dives with me and two of my certified friends at the same time as two other friends wanted to get certified. He assured me he did, but on arrival, it turned out that he is a one man show. Luckily, our other friends decided not to do their cert, otherwise it would have gotten tricky.

- On our very first trip, leaving the port, the dive boat hit the rocks on one side of the port entry. One of my friend had to jump over and onto the rocks to help them push the boat back into the water. Didn't seem like we had any damage, but not a good start.

- On the very first dive, Anees brought his gopro with him and kept taking off ahead of us to film the next creature that he saw seemingly without any regard to our enjoyment of the dive. As his dive buddy, I didn’t get any pictures on that dive because I had to keep chasing after him instead of enjoying my time under water.

- On that same dive, we penetrated a wreck without any lights! He motioned for us to follow him into the cargo hold and we assumed that he would flick his light on once we got inside. Except he didn't have a light. None of us did. I turned on my camera light to guide four of us inside.

- Next day we were to head out at 9am. He told us that they were fixing something on the boat and we should meet at 9:30. We were at the dive shop from 9:30 to 11 waiting for a word from him, then called it quits and went to the beach for an hour before grabbing all our stuff and heading back to the hotel. Finally, at 1pm we got a word that things are fixed and we will leave at 2pm.

- On our second trip out, we did not hit the harbor wall, but almost as soon as we left the harbor, the engine died and the boat drifted onto a coral patch. Anees jumped in the water and hysterically cried for us to jump in and push the boat against the current. We finally got it off the reef but not before I cut up my toes on the reef. The engine was still malfunctioning so we turned back to port.

- Anees arranged for a small dingy to take us out and we did two more dives, including the night dive at the wreck. These were pretty good, except for the boat not having any light for the ride back at night and hitting the waves pretty hard a couple times.

- Now for the fun part. Day three was supposed to start at 7:30am. Apparently, two different dingys bailed on Anees and by the time he found another boat willing to take us, it was 8:20am (we didn't know that - we were just at the dive shop wondering if we going to have to wait until 1pm again).

- Leaving the harbor, we headed for the channel to do a deep drift dive and see some sharks. Except that they (Anees and boat driver) couldn't seem to find the entry spot and kept arguing about it. At one point Anees hopped in the water to look for it and eventually we jumped in as well.

- After four minutes down under, descending to 24 meters, we still had no sight of the reef or the bottom and Anees signaled us to go up. And promptly swam up very fast. We had a hard time keeping up with him while also appeasing our dive computers continuously beeping at us. After three minute safety stop, we came up and saw our boat disappearing over the horizon.

- Anees asked me to use my whistle (apparently he didn't have one) but the boat was way too far away from us at that point. We inflated our BCDs and Anees got his safety tube out. And we started swimming. We weren't making any progress against the current and it didn't look like we could have made it to any of the nearby islands. By this point, Anees was using his safety tube as a swimming noodle and kept anxiously repeating "sh*t, I'm deep trouble now", not instilling much confidence. I inflated my safety tube and tried to keep it as high above water as I could while he still used his as a noodle. Eventually (I guessed 15 minutes later, my friends thought it was at least 20-25, either way, long enough for me to wonder if I could get a refund on my upcoming MLE-Sri Lanka flight if we just drift over there on our own) a fishing boat appeared in the distance. I started methodically waving my safety tube and blew the whistle a few more times and eventually they headed our way and fished us out of the water.

- On our way back to the harbor, we met our dingy. The guy told us that he left and was going to come back after half an hour. Anees told us that he was supposed to stay and follow our bubbles. Doesn't matter, we were done at this point and told Anees so. His demeanor changed dramatically - he essentially told us that he doesn't want to talk to us anymore. My buddy, a divemaster, tried to have a word with him, but Anees loudly accused him of being inexperienced and not knowing what he was talking about or how to handle the situation. Amusingly, for two days prior to this, he kept asking my buddy to come down from Dubai and manage the dive shop for him. But now we didn't know what we were doing...

I guess it was our fault for sticking with Anees after the first few (few!) issues. But his handling of the issues and complete refusal to talk about them afterwards is the real disappointment. We managed to do three more days of diving with two other dive operators based on Maafushi, which cost about the same and were night-and-day in comparison to our experience with Anees.

Thank you very much for the detailed unfortunate incidents happened in my diving center. True we had incidents with the boat engine and had lot of inconvenience for the customer. Sorry for that. However, given island life without proper mechanics and resources I served way better than the rest of the island services. That particular events I have to recruit new staff as it was very Low season and my boat captain left for a better salary leaving me to find inexperience captains for the particular weather. I bet my customers if they can find a better dive instructor than me in underwater in the Maldives. Unfortunate incidents happens and in that perticular cases I was on a boat completely new boat captains and caused so much loss of confidence and disappointments. My center takes care of customers way better than the rest of the service providers on the Gulhi island. I have bought a new boat and our service is even more better than the biggest competitors on the island. We assure all the readers and our customers we strive to serve you TOP of TOP service at a lowest possible price. Thank you for reading my humble apology.

Prior to our trip I had to convince my Mom to bring her dive certificate. She said she would never dive again having had problems with equalization. When we met Anees we had a long conversation with him about Maldives economy and politics, he gave us such an insight. Next day we went for a dive. He took his time descending and offered calm support to my Mom who, after some time managed to equalize and dove 30 meters deep! Thank you Anees for bringing us back to diving and giving us such a nice memory.
