The restoration of a stunning 19th C building in the heart of the Old part of Kalamata is exceptional. The collection is beautifully displayed and has a fantastic breadth of traditional clothing. This was my third visit and will by no means be my last - every time I've been I notice something new. We received a warm welcome and a brief, well presented introduction and then we're left to our own devices. If you are anywhere near or in Kalamata this is a must see museum.

Great collection of folk costumes. The music and the lights create such an atmosphere. The personnel is very gentle. The museum has tablets that describe fully the exhibits.
The entrance is 5 euros and 3 for children up to 12 years old.
The duration could be up to 1 hour

What a stunning, jaw droppingly beautiful experience.
Don't be put off by the shut door, just ring the bell and see an amazing collection of costumes from all over Greece.
I could not believe the beautiful handwork with precious threads and fabrics that have lasted through the years.
The display is clever, the people are lovely and after all my travels this was a stand out experince

Sumptuous collection of Greek traditional dress displayed in a serene, ultra-modern and cool environment. Reasonable 5 euro admission.

But don't be bullied by the helpful yet controlling staff into visiting the overpriced shop with very little of interest, unless you want a glossy card with no envelope for 3 euros.

When you’re in the area, do make time for this gem of a museum. Opened in 2017 and comprising 50 years of one passionate woman’s collection of traditional Greek costumes, it is astounding! On three floors (there’s an elevator) of a specially-renovated and remodeled building in downtown Kalamta, the costumes are displayed on three floors in logical order, some dating back more than 200 years. This isn’t a moth-eaten motley array: this is a top-notch collection and my husband and I spent two hours viewing the costumes and jewelry (the jewelry alone could be its own collection).

The exhibit titles are in Greek and English on interactive Samsung tablets. If you prefer, you can also exchange an ID for a tablet you can use at your pace (we did), allowing you to take your time, sit down on the benches, admire the costumes, and really read the accompanying text. I can’t pick a favorite costume-they are all beautiful and unique. I do wonder how much each one weighs, though. That was the only information not provided, and I’m curious because some of them included four or more cotton and wool layers. One costume required 10 undergarments/petticoats! Amazing.

Small gift shop has items inspired by the costume and jewelry in the collection, as well as catalogs and books from past exhibitions. I’m kicking myself I didn’t buy the silk worm cocoon necklace…it’s exquisite!

They also host special events like lectures and concerts in their on-site venue.

Very welcoming, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Really happy we stopped in and my husband enjoyed it as much as I did. Free parking on the street in front of the museum.

Richly displayed space of traditional Greek costumes from all regions of Greece, including an extensive jewelry collection. LCD displays showcase each costume from various angles with short descriptions & their origins on a map. Hand-held tablets are available as well.
Small nooks throughout building hold additional treasures. There is an outdoor area with tables & chairs & a small exquisite gift show.
Allow yourself time to take it all in.
Staff is extremely knowledgeable, helpful & English is flawlessly spoken.
A fabulous experience.

I really am not sure where to start from.. Let's take it from the exterior: the building itself is unbelievable - a landmark worth preserving!
As you go in, there is a well-mannered gentleman at the door, extremely polite and well-informed, ready to direct you to the info point/sales counter and to explain how to walk around the exhibition, what's the flow. Following that, at the counter you are provided with a tablet (oh yes!) which allows you to fully appreciate the costumes you will see, as it has a 3D and a zoom option in each photo - needless to say that you can spend hours with that, simply observing each costume's details, from every possible angle. Oh, and you choose your preferred language of course, GR or EN.
The exhibition itself is AMAZING. I have no words to describe it, the collection, the showcasing, the lighting of each costume.. everything splendid! I must say I am not much of a museum person, but this is something I will cherish for the rest of my life (and definitely go back!). I did not upload a lot of photos on purpose, as I really don't want to spoil it.
I was also lucky enough to have visited during a temporary exhibition inspired by the Greek history, of Mr. Nikos Floros, ''Heros made of metal'' - portraits and costumes from recycled aluminum basically - simply brilliant!
The patio is also charming to finish the visit, although admittedly the plants needed a bit of extra love & attention and lastly the souvenirs' shop has some wonderful gift options for you and your loved ones!

Anyone passing by Kalamata, should make a stop - it is a must!

Ps. regarding covid (unfortunately I must comment on that as well, hopefully for the last time) measures: everyone is very cautious and you are obligated to use hand sanitizer before you are handed the tablet.
