“Castle was a Disappointment”

Although Castiglione di Sicilia is a medieval town, enchantingly perched on a hill with mysterious winding vicoli and old stone houses, not to mention a stupendous view of Etna, the castle itself was a bit disappointing. Not only was it closed the day we visited, the outside really didn't present too much to even see or photograph. It certainly didn't match my expectations after viewing it from a distance. Another thing, the town itself, which is classified amongst the Most Beautiful Towns in Italy, didn't even have any restaurants or bars open for tourists seeking refreshment. Everything was closed, like Castle Lauria.

The castle itself is not very special. It is open until 1830/1930 (depending on season). It’s location however is great to watch Mt Etna and the sunset. Only few parking spots nearby, but you can easily park your car in the village and walk up some stairs and narrow streets up to the castle.

Another thing, the town itself, which is classified amongst the Most Beautiful Towns in Italy, didn't even have any restaurants or bars open for tourists seeking refreshment. Everything was closed, like Castle Lauria.

Be aware not to be killed by locals

This is an extraordinary review, even for me. We had been visiting this nice little town which has got an award being the nicest among the "piccoli borghi". In fact, it is nice but, unfortunately, we as a group had always difficulties with the local traffic.Local drivers do not seem to care a lot for pedestrians, especially for bloody foreign tourists. Our (Italian) guide said that - apparently - they are not happy that tourism is flourishing.

Everything was topped when we walked around the fascinating road around the castello di Lauria when a local female driver (with young child sitting next to her and two young men sitting in the back) was accelerating rather than breaking when she saw us on that road. One of the youngsters was even opening the door doing everything to hit us. We had to jump aside in order not to be hurt. Shortly after they stopped and entered their house (beginning of via San Marco). They continued to laugh at us and - apparently - had great fun while we with pale faces had to pass this scene. What a shame!
In the meantime, carabinieri men and local police were drinking their coffee in the main bar, not being aware of what is happening in the (lovely?) little town.

Town has a walking tour which has panels on the footpath which explain all of the old sites. Very well done.

There are signs next to each monument showing the path . In the center of this little village there is a great pasticerie!

Worth it for the view

This is the castle, or what is left of it, at the top of Castiglione di Sicilia, a nice hilltop town. The castle mainly consists of rock and a small building with an entrance arch. There is really little to see but the views are good. In the building is a collection of old photographs of processions etc which are interesting but no attempt has been made to show them properly or provide any information about them. They could do so much better and would then be able make a small entry charge.

Nice view but closed

Amazing view over the Alcantara's valley. We found it closed, that was a pity because from the external appearance worth a visit. It's better to call some info # before to drive up.

Crag martins in the castle!

There was a great view of the valley when you got up to the castle. Also it was wonderful to see the crag martins nesting in the nooks and crannies; we could see the chicks being fed insects by the parents. Worth a visit if you are staying in the area.

It was supposed to be a castle to protect the inhabitant of this region like many other castle in Sicily unfortunately it was never restored to it's original state and I think it would benefit the town of Castiglione di Sicilia however the town is a very interesting place to visit and mostly you should take your time and walk the street of this quint town.

Free to visit, good views but don't make a special trip
The castle is free to visit and offers good views. The painted ceilings are good but the refurbishment is not completed as yet. Whole visit takes about 20 mins...
