Lovely visit, the pictures speak for itself, a nice church from the outside and after climbing a stair from the inside. Below a some historical or archeological artifacts can be seen.

Strolling round Piazza Garibaldi at sunset, we made our way back into Centro Storico by the Torre Normanno and briefly went in to the church. It is probably the principal church in CIsternino but is almost unnoticeable in its relatively plain neo-classical exterior. it is not ostentatious (which perhaps is typical of Cisternino itself) but the clean lines, somewhat understated because of the stairs and walkway up from the sloping street from via San Quirico, are beautiful, with little more than the small crucifix at the apex of the pediment and the statues ( maybe St Peter and St Paul ) to suggest its purpose.
Inside its austere interior repeats the simplicity - stone columns and capitals divide the church into three naves; the plain timber truss roof and simple altar and wooden cross.
Sadly we didn't have time to explore more, I also didn't want to disturb people at prayer, but I am disappointed not to to have seen the Putignano sculptures and the Madonna del Cardellino.
Well worth a visit - (to answer the question below - our children with us are over 25 and brought their wife and girlfriend respectively!)

The church of San Nicola is the mother church of the town of Cisternino. It has a very simple and pleasing Romanesque interior. It also has two unusual and beautiful side chapels at the right. The second is a fine chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. On the wall between the two is a wonderful piece of sculpture by local superstar sculptor Stefano da Putignano. It is a 1517 stone statue of the Madonna and Child.
