This is a beautiful piece of Bog Oak Sculpture located outside the walls of Trim Castle just outside the entrance to Trim Castle Hotel. It is officially titled 'A Hunger for Knowledge'.
It is beautifully mounted on top of a small bricked mound and depicts the Salmon of Knowledge from the Irish mythological story of Fionn Mac Cumhaill. It depicts Fionn carrying the vanquished body Ferdia. Reputedly, it was on the River Boyne, only a mere 50 metres from this statue, that Fionn accidentally tasted of the Salmon of Knowledge. He was cooking it for his master who warned him not to taste it but he burned his finger as he cooked, sucked on it to ease the pain and tasted the salmon acquiring all the knowledge and wisdom of the world!
It was erected in 2007 and is carved from Bog Oak from Gallon Bog in County Cavan by the sculptor Joey Burns. At night it is beautifully lit and by day it is a very prominent and striking piece of statuary. It makes for a lovely stop on a walk around the medieval town of Trim and its Castle walls.
Trim has an annual Salmon of Knowledge Festival every August so try to come to the town then, though the statue is obviously open and accessible all year round. The festival is a free event with music, dramatic performances incorporating the mythical story of the Salmon of Knowledge from the Boyne, arts/crafts, culture, art workshops, children’s entertainment and much more.
It really is a very beautiful piece of art and well worth your time.

You will "get this" much more if you know a little about the salmon of knowledge and Irish folklore.
