We liked wandering in the narrow streets and the stairs in the Old Town. You need comfty shoes! The Duomo is perhaps on the highest point of the town. The Cathedrale di Santa Maria Assunta was built between 1437-1495. It’s an impressive building with beautiful rose windows on the fronts of the church. Inside my favourite parts were the ceiling and the baroque style altar (from about 1720). It’s made from stone with wooden altarpice. I think it’s worth a visit.

Cattedralle Santa Maria Assunta is the official name of this Cathedral perched on top of the White City. You walk uphill the old town winding tiny streets until you reach it.
The present Cathedral dates back to 15c built in Gothic style with marvelous Rose window on the front facade. At night it is beautifully illuminated with a bar set around it side walls.

Beautiful paintings on the ceiling of the Nave. Rose window was beautiful although I personally like stain glass in it.

Compared to some of the great cathedrals in the Christian world, this building is quite modest, in both scale and decoration. The two side altars are more impressive than the central altar. Quite hard to get a good photo from outside as the building is positioned in what is now a quite small square at the top of the hill.

As you stroll up through the old city you will come across the cathedral. We happened to enter just as Sunday service was concluding. The building boasts an ornate ceiling and a lovely rose window.

Getting there is the main draw as you slowly meander up to the top of the hill where the Cathedral sits.
The exterior facade includes a beautiful stone rosette. The interior is less convincing and includes painted walls simulating marble.

The church is unique and has a very interesting rose window which is similar to the one in Lecce. Very nice frescoes inside.

Saw Duomo open and jumped in. Fabulous statue of St Francis. The facial expression is unforgettable. Closed in the afternoon.

The Cathedral of Ostuni (Duomo di Ostuni or Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta) was originally built as an Orthodox church around the year 1,000.
This first church was replaced a Romanesque building during the first half of the 13th century and finally rebuilt in Gothic style during the late 15th century.
The façade acquired its elegant rose window in the 15th century.

The interior has a number of artworks that covered the ceiling and altars.

Admission is free, although a (small) donation will always be appreciated.

A typical Italian church, good looking and quite ornate (especially the ceiling paintings) but nothing particularly outstanding.
