On a clear day, the glacier can be seen from a viewing spot on the road and it will amaze you. Worth the drive

Bear Glacier--our welcome to Stewart and Hyder
Aug 2019
My husband and I have visited Stewart and Hyder many times over the years and we are always happy to arrive at Bear Glacier. It marks the start of our adventure. We marvel at the waterfalls--really good at certain times of the year. And then there is Bear Glacier welcoming you to the other glaciers farther on like Salmon Glacier and Berendon Glacier. Although we are saddened by the shrinking of the glacier, nevertheless it is still awesome and we find ourselves stopping at almost every pullout to get just another view. Enjoy.

This is an eye opener. I haven't been up that way since 1998 and before that made my first visit in 1986. In 86 we parked in the gravel parking area, walked across a small shallow creek at the edge of the parking area and walked another 50 yards to take a little walk along the glaciers edge ( actually up on the ice about 25 feet above the rocks). In 1998 I took my son and daughter ( she was 2 months before her birth the first visit) and I was shocked that the creek was a tiny "lake" and the glacier's edge wasalmost a 1/4 of a mile away from the parking area. This is a real eye opener for those who don't buy into the Global Warming "theory". What I see in these more recent pictures is beautiful but makes me so sad. The glacier was halfway up the sides of the "valley" that it has created in the mountain.

Just pull off the roadside for some great photos! This is a few miles down the highway between Meziadin Junction and Stewart BC.

So beautiful, easy access, lots of camping in the area, either pay or boon docking in your RV. Be prepared as no cell or internet, a sat phone or inreach gps text device is recommended when travelling the north. Since the 50s the glacier has been receding and future generations should see them before they are gone . Be very bear aware for both blacks and grizzlies.

Glacier wonders
Mar 2019 • Couples
As a local it’s almost impossible to drive by without stopping to take a photo. In May 2017 we kayaked across the little lake to see the glacier up close. (There’s a road down to the lake near where the public bathroom is). Hiking to it is a little more difficult as there’s a creek you need to cross.
