About
This dormant volcano crater is one of Honolulu’s major natural landmarks, known for its history, amazing hikes, and stunning coastal views. The way to the summit is an easy-to-moderate hike up—though there's a steep flight of steps—and you'll be treated to some of the best views on the island. There are also many lookouts surrounding the crater. If you have limited mobility, don't worry, multiple other hikes within the park are accessibility friendly.
It can get busy (and hot!) so try to reach early in the morning and bring sunscreen and plenty of water. Online reservations are required for non-residents but are often included in guided tours of Diamond Head. – Tripadvisor

It's a nice state park and there is a gift store to buy water for your hike up to the top of the monument. The hike itself is a nice journey to the top with nice view of the crater and the beautiful ocean. When you finally get to the top, it has a magnificent view of Waikiki beach and so much more. Make sure you pick up a t shirt or two at the gift shop.Visited November 2022Written 13 December 2022
- Janice3 contributionsThe view from the top is amazing! We booked reservations ahead of time and just printed the QR code. When we arrived, they just quickly scanned the code and we went right in, parked and started hiking. It was very easy and the views at the top are amazing!Visited December 2022Written 19 December 2022
- Dawn C19 contributionsDiamond Head at sunrisePlease know, if you are not a resident of Hawai’i, you have to make a reservation and there is a cost ($10/car and $5/person). This is not a hike. It is a climb. The path to the top is very clear and safe. There are some uneven places as you make your up. We had a 6am reservation and were able to see the sun rise! There were quite a few people at the very top so be patient as people are taking selfies, etc. I would definitely do this again.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2022
- lifeisforlearningWashington DC, District of Columbia318 contributionsBucket List HikeThe moderate hike to the summit with many steps takes less than an hour each way and you get great views. Note that all visitors from out of state MUST get an online reservation in advance or you will be turned away. It's only $5 and was easy to do. Be sure to take water and a hat.Visited December 2022Written 23 December 2022
- nikitasadiePortland, Oregon33 contributionsDiamond Head Memorial ParkWe went early in the morning for sunrise. You can take the bus or drive up. We took the bus which made for a longer hike. Bring water especially if you are not used to a humid climate, parts of the hike are quite steep, especially the stairs. The views are definitely worth the hike up. When you get to the top, hang out a bit. Rainbows show up in multiple places if it's cloudy.Visited September 2022Written 30 December 2022
- Elisabeth H9 contributionsMust do at ANY time! This was the first thing I did in Hawaii. Incredible views with plenty of lookout points along the way. Feels like every time you turn a corner, there's a view that's even more incredible than the last. A great hike for people of all ages and abilities. I like that reservations are required, and they're capping the amount of people allowed at any given time - means the path and lookout points don't get overwhelmingly peopled.Visited December 2022Written 1 January 2023
- K Tan4 contributionsWorth the sore legs at the endBest to come in the morning - even with our booking at 10am there were still a lot of people but it wasnt too crowded. Great views and a marvelous hike over all. Lots of steps and uphill walk but well worth it. Booking is a must. Took us about 1.5 hrs to complete but that was with a few stops for photosVisited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2023
- DnalsaamSidney, Canada109 contributionsGreat views, enjoyable physical challengeWe reached the park with a tour company who had organized the entrance tickets. The walk is somewhat challenging but even with my balance issues and the need to use walking poles, I was able to make it. Near the top, there are two options: one that is more gradual and one that is straight up reasonably steep stairways. Were I to do it again, I would go up the steep stairways as the more gradual route was completely in the sun and the stairways were in the shade.Visited December 2022Written 9 January 2023
- JenWaikiki, Hawaii2 contributionsBeautiful Place to visit especially on sunset and sunrise! It was 4pm when we climbed up, and it was a little bit hot when hiking up the mountain, but it was the perfect weather when we went back down. There were a lot of rocks and uneven surfaces so you should watch your step at all times. There are multiple picture taking spots along the way which is very convenient. Near the top, my daughter got a little scared because of the height but the view was amazing. It is a must see when visiting Hawaii.Visited January 2023Written 10 January 2023
- Daniella FHamilton, New Zealand95 contributionsAmazing views!Cool walk up the side of a volcano to some amazing views with some great history. The website made the walk sound hard but it was super easy for me (25minutes up). Those from NZ who are used to doing hiking will find this super easy. Recommend going early in morning so you beat the heat & see the sun coming up. You can Uber from Waikiki to the diamond head tunnel for about $12-14 USD & then I walked back to Waikiki afterwards - was a long walk but down hill or flat and lots to explore so if you’re into that makes it cheaper. Make sure you register online using the official website - you must have a prepared registration. Great morning had!Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 January 2023

Awesome trail/ hike to the top. Gorgeous views. Not too rough but definitely were panting a little! Places to stop and sit along the way.

Would recommend everyone do this while in Honolulu. It’s an easy hike and excellent way to start the day if you’ll be spending time in Hawaii.

I made a reservation to hike Diamondhead on my first day in Hawaii. It was an easy hike so to say and the views of Waikiki Beach are breathtaking. Definitely bring water and protein bars and hike accordingly but it’s not a hard hike. You do need to make a reservation and it’s just minutes away from downtown Waikiki. Definitely a recommended site to visit if in Honolulu

Amazing experience. A must-do item if you are in Honolulu or Waikiki. We took an Uber to the Visitor parking inside the park, but you can also take a bus to the entrance of the park and walk up 10 mins to the start of the hike. Would recommend that you wear sneakers or boots because some parts are a bit slippery. Also bring a bottle of water, wear sunscreen, and bring sunglasses. Views are phenomenal all the way up. When you get to the fork, follow the recommended path and go left. Do NOT go up the right side (very long staircase) since that will take you to the bunker and you will bypass a number of amazing views. You can always loop back that way down, but we went down the same way we went up. Entire hike up and down took about an 1-1.5 hours.

Moderate hike with fantastic views along the way and at the top. The historic bunkers are very cool. The first 0.6 miles is pretty easy, low incline pathway, with uneven ground. The last 0.2 miles are the stair cases and tunnel, which we found tiring. Plenty of people stop for breaks along the way though. I don’t recommend a stroller, but plenty of young kids were climbing up with their parents.

Wonderful view when you reach the top. This climb Is not for folks who have physical or breathing problems. A lot of the trail is natural so can be challenging if your balance is off. The climb up and back totals 1.6 miles and it’s all uphill so carrying infants isn’t a good idea especially in 80 degree weather.

The hike was pretty easy. I saw hikers from all sorts of ages from 4 year olds to people if their 70’s. It seemed like it used to be all paved but over time it has deteriorated but still continues to be a steady and even. There’s no rocks to climb over. The beginning of it is definitely paved and about half way up it no longer a is but still even. I didn’t take my mom because she has bad knees but she definitely could’ve done it at her own pace. The stairs are steep and to get to the look out at top it’s more like a ladder. Both is them are at the end of the hike and if it’s too difficult there’s a lookout just before the stairs and the view is almost at the top and very pretty. You must do a reservation online at the parks website or else you won’t be allowed in. You can reserve entrance per person and a parking space or if parking is sold out you can reserve your entrance only. Parking was sold out when I wanted to go even on a Tuesday at 6am. I parked on the street just outside the park which was just about an 8 minute walk to the park kiosk entrance. We took about an 1.5 hours to hike in and out and wonder around the top fort and visitors center so it’s not a long hike. Easily doable under an hour in and out. Recommend to go as early as possible to avoid the crowds and foot traffic as the tunnels and path are narrow, avoid the mid day heat, and don’t wear flip flops.

Not worth the visit, a dry hot place where you have to book in advance to be able to walk around in the volcanic crater. You can drive up to the guard and turn around, which is more than enough

Well worth the physical workout getting up to the top. We wish we would have started earlier in the morning due to heat and crowds. We took the trolley up and back to Waikiki. It took about an hour round trip. We were lucky to have a clear time of day where we could see so far out, because most days it will get misty at some point and visibility may be limited briefly. So glad we did this. MAKE RESERVATIONS ahead of time because it is required. $5 great value though.

We visited diamond head and it was a great hike. Not too hard but very windy at the top. Make sure to hang on to your hat and glasses. The history was great and we made it up in about a half hour. The views were great and picturesque

I’m trying to make a reservation but the website stalls on the payment page. I tried 6 times in the last 2 days. Is there a problem? Does anybody know when it will be fixed? For reference this is the website I’m using gostateparks.hawaii.gov/diamondhead

Yes there’s a place for taxis and Uber Lyft drop off. The city bus drops off a couple minutes down the hill.. they ask for reservations for the park currently, but same day reservations we’re available when I was there. There’s a lot of walking involved so just prepare for the sun.
what is the cost to get in ?

Is there a bus that I can take from the Ilikai Hotel to the hike up Diamond Head
Z4859BAjohnm
Long Beach, CA50 contributions
Bus service around the island is pretty good, and there is a bus that goes up to Diamond Head, but as noted by others, the bus stop is just outside the gateway tunnel to the park, so it's a bit of a hike to the visitor center in the middle of the caldera. From the visitor center you can then hike up to the rim and get some really great views, but hiking is the only way to the rim.

Starting May 1st, is not when the is busiest ... reservation is needed. As such, I believe the reservations will control the overcrowding for visitors to enjoy their visits. Reservations can be 2 weeks in advance.

Is it okay for a first timer hiker? I want to bring my children here.

There are 2 trails to the top on the park side.. One with 2 sets of steep stairs and a circular staircase. Depending on your health and the age and health of your children that will determine the ease. I found the stairs a struggle at 56 yrs old. Doing It at your own pace with rest stops will make it a bit easier. I brought 2 bottles of water per person.
Review the access road to the left prior to entering the park. To me it appeared to be an additional access with less steep trails, that would also get you to the highest peak.
Any reservations needed for hiking Diamond Head now?
