- Kimberly KFort Worth, Texas5 contributionsSanta Fe Plaza General CommentsSanta Fe Plaza is mostly galleries and shopping, A LOT of shopping. Don't miss San Miguel, the oldest church in the US as well as the adjacent oldest house in the US, a short walk from the plaza. I enjoyed the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, but admission is steep at $22 (in my opinion). San Francisco Bar & Grill had delicious, reasonably priced food.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 March 2024
- KathrinePennsylvania632 contributionsPretty Plaza, but walk off the plaza to surrounding streetsMany shops and restaurants surround the green square. Definitely go off the square to the other streets for beautiful architecture, more shops and restaurants. On weekends, Native Americans sell their lovely jewelry, blankets etc under the cover next to the Palace of the Governors. Don’t miss the cathedral a few blocks away. We were a bit disappointed when we went inside the Palace of Governors. It was almost empty. Expected more inside. Parking is insane. There is a parking garage at La Fonda Hotel. Glad we walked from our hotel.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2024
- FamilyTravelClayton, North Carolina38 contributionsPlaza and chapel visitsMy family spent a total of two hours in the plaza area on a Saturday. We found street parking two blocks away. We visited the basilica, Loretto Chapel, and the plaza shops and vendors in this two hours. We enjoyed it, and we were done with everything in a couple Of hours.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 June 2024
- yasemin2kFlorida354 contributionsGreat area to shop, walk and dineGreat area to visit, look around, eat, just walk around. Free parking Sundays, and pretty crowded, but if you go half a block easy to find parking on the side of the road. Good food options, even though it was 106 outside, being dry, didn’t feel hot walking around.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2024
- Meggan SOkarche, Oklahoma50 contributionsGreat family fun, lots of original artists at the PlazaOur second time visiting The Santa Fe Plaza and we enjoyed our day there as a family. Ate lunch at The Shed, visited St Francis Cathedral and The Loretto Chapel, both are very beautiful and loved hearing the story behind The Loretto Chapel and the spiral staircase. You do have to pay to go inside The Loretto Chapel because it’s privately owned now and is a museum but the you walk inside and it’s like you stepped back in time. They have taken very good care of it and the gift shop has plenty of souvenirs and Catholic items and books to choose from. Also, while in the Plaza, do yourself a favor and find/visit The San Miguel Mission Church. It’s really pretty as well and at the Alter, they have see through glass area where you can actually see the original steps that led into the church many years ago.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2024
- Outdoor TravelerBangor, Maine48 contributionsNice historic plaza and lots of shopping availableWe visited The Plaza on a beautiful, sunny morning and it was great. Pretty, historic, and safe feeling. We enjoyed walking around and chatting with the Native Americans that were selling jewelry and crafts. After a nice long visit at the museum and lunch, we walked some more and did some shopping. Mostly it was a good experience and we enjoyed several of the shops. Traffic had picked up in the afternoon and it was much noisier and crowded. We definitely enjoyed the visit, shopping, scenery, and history, but the best parts for us were the visits to the museum, historic attractions, and shops that were off on side streets or away from central area. We didn't visit The Plaza at night and I'm not sure that we would feel safe there like we did at the restaurants and other places that were just outside of the central plaza.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2025

Located in downtown Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Plaza is a National Historic Landmark that serves as the area’s center gathering place. It consists of a central park lined with grass, trees, benches, a monument and a performing arts stage. The plaza is known for its lively atmosphere, the Native American artisans who sell their creations beneath the portal of the Palace of the Governors, and the traditional adobe buildings that house many surrounding attractions, such as the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Palace of the Governors (the oldest public building in the U.S.), and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. The plaza is surrounded by many restaurants, hotels and dozens of retailers offering products that range from local souvenirs to high-end jewelry and apparel.
Many guidebooks and articles recommend that you make a point to stop by the Santa Fe Plaza because it serves as a great jumping off point for exploring Santa Fe’s top attractions, many of which spool out from the plaza (for example, Canyon Road and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum). My wife and I would agree. We took the 6 or 7 block walk from our hotel to the Plaza on a chilly (38° F/3.3° C) early March morning. Because of the early hour and the temperature, there were very few artisans or tourists out yet so we were able to stroll about freely, taking in the lovely sites and snapping photos at our leisure; when businesses began to open, we were able to visit and explore them minus the crowds. It was a wonderful experience and gave us a sense of the history and uniqueness of the city. We would highly recommend the Plaza to any visitor to Santa Fe.

There's a train from Albuquerque to Santa Fe that costs only $6 for students. The plaza was close to the rail station so we decided to visit the plaza. The weather was good. It's cooler than Albuquerque. Plenty of places to dine. I'd recommend the ones that serve traditional foods.

The hub of the city with its beautiful Central Park surrounded by historical adobe museums and buildings. Definitely worth visiting.
Sitting here in the shade you can take a breath and enjoy the atmosphere. On both occasions I was there a local Native American was providing authentic music, the birds were singing and it felt like the world was at peace.
My only reservation which meant I nearly scored this average is the fact that there are lots of Native Americans sat on the floor surrounding the plaza.
The issue I have is the fact that whilst there is no doubt their presence adds to the atmosphere and authenticity of the city, the city doesn’t acknowledge this by giving them proper stands on which to display their goods instead of leaving them on the cold floor. The contradiction that around the corner are masses of shops selling goods worth thousands made me uncomfortable. It felt disrespectful.

Super disappointed with trip to Santa Fe plaza October 2024. We brought out of state visitors to see Miracle stair case and check out art and shops on the plaza. We called for an Uber, not able to provide a driver, so we walked from the train station and arrived at chapel at 5:08. The chapel had closed at 5:00. Then we found that the galleries and most stores on the plaza were closed too. Restaurants were open so we stopped for ice cream at the expresso/hagen daas location …. 20 minute line wait to order when the employee who could operate the cash register had to leave and we couldn’t pay. We left a $20 (for a small milkshake and smoothie) with the young server who was unable to process payment and was left alone with a line of touristas. Then we found that most of the other shops were closed too. If you’re “wandering” you’ll need to visit the plaza well before 5:00 pm.

I found the town to be overrated. The Palace of the Governors is practically empty inside. I wasted time there before heading to the O'Keeffe museum. The counter person there walked up to me just when it was my turn to buy a ticket to turn me away. I was leaving the next day and couldn't come back. People strangely seemed compelled to throw the number 13 at you as if they made a pact with the devil to curse you. Walking around the city felt like there were demons flying around waiting to get you in trouble. I got very strange vibes from that town. I don't envy the people who live there.

Unknowingly, we visited the same week of the balloon festival in Albuquerque. Everything was extremely crowded...people everywhere. There are so many shops and galleries your head will spin. Everything I liked was very expensive! I really liked The Rainbow Man shop. Unique finds and friendly employees. We also went visited the Georgia O Keefe Museum....I think I would have enjoyed it more if it wouldn't have been so crowded and would have spent more time there.... It took me about 30 min to go through.
If you visit Santa Fe I definitely recommend staying in a hotel near the plaza. We stayed at the Buffalo Thunder Casino 15 min from plaza and regretted it.

The Santa Fe Plaza is a beautiful adornment to the vibrant and colorful capital of New Mexico. This unique plaza is located in the heart of the city. The Palace of the Governors, Basilica of St Francis of Assissi and the New Mexico Museum of Art are all located within the plaza. There are a number of shops selling Native American jewelry dotting the plaza. There are a number of cafes, art galleries, ice cream shops, restaurants and shops selling local souvenirs around the plaza and the presence of all of these ensure that the area around the plaza is very vibrant and happening. There were a number of musicians, adding to the vibe of the plaza. The traditional architecture of the buildings around the plaza give it a unique feel. There is a park in the middle of the plaza with a few benches to sit on, it is a lovely spot to rest and soak in the vibe of the plaza. Canyon Road opens out from near this area, and it is an excellent place to walk around with its multiple art galleries. The St Francis Cathedral is an exquisite piece of architecture, I really enjoyed walking around the cathedral building. If you love photography, the Santa Fe plaza with its unique New Mexico architecture and combinations of colors is going to give you oodles of opportunities to show off your skills. I would highly recommend anyone to enjoy a stroll on the plaza with a coffee or enjoy a warm dinner at any of the restaurants that surround the plaza - a magnificent way to relax and enjoy probably the prime attraction Santa Fe has to offer!

Santa Fe has officially gone “woke”. The city elders have covered the central feature describing the history of Santa Fe that is on the Plaza; the statue and its story birds telling the history of Santa Fe.
History is what it is, for good or bad. We learn from history otherwise it is repeated.

A very busy plaza with places to sit in the shade, listen to music by local musicians, and enjoy the afternoon. Local jewelry artists display their wares along one side of the Plaza. There always seemed to something going on at this focal point in the historic section of Santa Fe.

The Square is okay, with lots of colorful characters making good people watching. But keep your wits about you! The problem is that some shops take advantage of innocent older women. Case in point: Avoid “Kamea,” the new name for the former “Santa Fe Spa Center by Voupre,” at 208-B W. San Francisco. They accost people on the sidewalk, lure them in with a sample, and use every trick in the book to get them to buy skincare products that are way overpriced and of questionable benefit. Suddenly people find huge charges on their credit cards. Don’t ruin your trip: Avoid the scammers and beware of unethical high-pressure techniques.

Do the shops and restaurants close earlier on Sunday’s?

Hi I need parking near the plaza. Hilton charges $22/day. Are there any lot cheaper that allow overnight parking?
Written 15 April 2022
Not positive but I believe the public parking garages around the square are your best best. There are several of them.

Sunday? Are the native american vendors on the plaza on Sunday in Santa fe ?
Written 25 July 2021
Did not see any when we were there and that was a Fri-Sun. Best bet is to look up any of the retailers there and ask when the best time to go is.

Is there a place to park near the plaza with a camper in tow?
Written 13 July 2021
I would recommend parking a bit farther away and walking. Due to the historic area, streets are narrow and congested with traffic and people.

We are thinking about driving down from WY this weekend to get away from the snow. Are shops and museums open in March 2021. Are vendors selling their wares? What are covid restrictions?

Are dogs on a leash allowed in the Plaza?
Written 11 December 2019
Leash only, as well as clean up after dog. I think I recall bowls out on the plaza for water.
