Imagine over 500 colourful hot air balloons rising up at dawn over the New Mexico landscape… there's truly nothing like it. The place to experience it is each October at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Spectators and balloon pilots from all over the world gather (some even camping in their caravans) to watch the mass ascensions held in the mornings, and night events like the 'glowdeo'. Music stages are set up during the day and performers stroll through the festival crowds, which can number 750,000 people.

I never tire of bringing family and friends to the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival. You need to get up early to see the dawn patrol but it is worth every minute of missed sleep. Especially seeing children’s excited expressions. Awesome!!

We’ve had the get opportunity of being in Albuquerque during the Balloon Fiesta twice now...along with the 50 million other visitors. It’s magic, pure magic. You’ll want to run out and buy your own hot air balloon before it’s over. Even the Albuquerque Police manage...More

Awesome time even if you are not a big balloon enthusiast. The balloons are amazing and the ability to go down on the field and watch them launch is amazing. Once of the coolest experiences was waking up the next day to thousands of balloons...More

The biggest and the best--BY FAR!!! This is the balloon festival to see if you want to see one. This is definitely the Grandaddy of them all. Stay for the week and pray that the wind doesn't blow the whole time. Pack a heavy jacket...More

I am so fortunate that my office overlooks balloon fiesta park so I can see the balloons launch every day during the annual balloon fiesta. Every year we watch for the new Special Shapes balloons and they get more inventive (and even larger) every year....More

The AIBF is always held on the first two weekends in October and is always subject to the weather. If there's too much wind, the balloons can't go up. That was the case for the 2nd weekend of 2017. But after 45 years of ballooning,...More

We were traveling through Albuquerque while this event was taking place. Certainly adds to the traffic. Even if you can't or don't want to go to the launch grounds, this event can be experienced some just by finding a good parking spot and watching the...More

Hi, thank you for your question. A mass ascension is when all 500 + balloons take flight. Other sessions may feature fewer balloons, but are just as impressive, as there are still many balloons that launch. One of the... More
