About
Lonely Planet voted the West Coast Wildlife Centre in the heart of Franz Josef as one of the 12 must see things to visit in New Zealand. This is the largest kiwi hatching facility in the South Island and the "must see" indoor all weather attraction in Franz Josef – home to the official hatching facility for the world's 2 rarest kiwis – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. See live kiwi during the day inside our nocturnal house, discover the interactive glacier attraction and West Coast storytelling areas or go behind the scenes on the “Backstage Pass Tour” and see live kiwi chicks and meet the friendly kiwi ranger staff. Numbers are very limited on the 30 minute Backstage Pass Tour so booking are highly recommended to avoid disappointment. The best shopping in Franz Josef can be found here inside the all weather facility -and enjoy free Wi-Fi in the cafe to keep connected to family and friends. Enjoy a coffee or a snack in the cafe – or pick up a pack lunch for your day of adventure. Open from 8.30am daily – 365 days. Set aside 1-2 hours for your visit. All tickets purchased are valid for 24 hours so you can come back and see the kiwi as many times as you like within that period !.

Best activity during a rainy day
This was a very interesting tour, we learned a lot about kiwis life. Our guide-Steve was very well prepared and the tour was like a story. New Zealand is a lesson for the entire world how to protect nature and also how to make nature reborn. We managed to see 2 kiwi birds and they were quite active. We recommend the tour, it took only 45 minute and the entering ticket has a 48 hours validity.
Thanks for the 5 star review and really appreciated the shout out to Steve our Ranger guide and the VIP Backstage Pass Tour. In NZ we are very protective of our highly endangered native species and it’s a great privilege to be able to help bring the 2 rarest of kiwi species back from the edge of extinction -in partnership with the Department of Conservation. Our guests tells us the 48 hours unlimited entry pass is great value for money and we really appreciate you sharing your review with future guests 🙏

    Don’t miss the kiwis!
We’re often sceptical of these ‘wildlife’ experiences but can’t praise this one enough. We bought the ‘behind the scenes, 48 hour’ pass and it was well worth it. We spent a fascinating hour with Steve, who gave us a great insight into the amazing conservation and kiwi population increasing work that they do at the centre. He was so knowledgeable and had a number of interesting videos/props. The viewing of the actual kiwis (2x year old birds) was a real highlight of our trip to New Zealand. To watch them so close up and hear them snuffling in the search for food was unforgettable. Our 48 hour pass gave us 3 chances to pop in and see them again before we left. Fabulous!
Thank you for the 5 star review and delighted that you really enjoyed your VIP Backstage Pass Tour with Steve. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and entertaining team members who are so passionate about the work with do -in partnership with the Department of Conservation-to bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the edge of extinction.👍🙏.The 48 hour pass is really great value for money and that you do much for highlighting this for future guests.

Rare Rowi kiwis in a simulated habitat
The wildlife centre has created a perfect environment for rearing and viewing kiwis. The ticket is valid for 48 hours so you can choose the best time, which seems to be morning. We were made very welcome, and given an introduction to the facility. It's quite dark in there and can take 10 minutes to be able to see properly. The kiwis are very close and quite active. We were enchanted. They also have tuatata lizards (also rare). Try challenging them to a staring match!
Thanks so much for the 5-star review and for sharing your feedback with future guests. The 48 hour passes we are told represents excellent value for money and so pleased that you really enjoyed your visit. With less than 600 rowi kiwi left alive in the wild we have hatched and incubated over 385 of these helping bring the worlds rarest kiwi -the rowi - back from the very edge of extinction.Your visit and the monies spent with us are helping to fund the work we do -in partnership with The Department of Conservation.

    Best place to see Kiwis!
An absolute gem of a spot! My family stopped at a few Kiwi centers and aviaries during our trip and this one was by far the best place to see a Kiwi. The habitat takes up a large % of the building and we were able to see two of the birds very easily even in the darkness. They were quite active and utterly adorable! There is a wall up to about belly level and don’t miss the glass near the ground, when the kiwis come up to the wall you can see them so well. The owner was actually working the counter when we arrive and he was so excited to share about the center and his conservation efforts. A must see while in Franz Josef!
Thank you so much for your kind review and delighted that you really enjoyed your visit . All our team are so very passionate about our facility and the work we are doing -in partnership with the Department of Conservation to bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the edge of extinction. Our customers tell us that our kiwi viewing experience is exceptional and we are all so pleased that you took the time to enjoy your time with us. I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your time in beautiful Franz Josef 🙏

Very nice and interesting museum for everyone who loves kiwis!
We came in only 45 minutes before closing and bought a regular entry ticket. Time was a little too short, but you can actually come in again the next day with your ticket to read everything you missed. However, for watching the two kiwis in the dark, the timing was absolutely perfect, so I encourage everyone to step in. Even if there is not much time left that day. The information on the boards was very interesting and nicely visualized. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well. Considering they are doing a good deed with the ticket money, I can only recommend the visit.
Thank you Maxi for the 5 star review and so pleased that you really enjoyed your visit and had a wonderful kiwi viewing experience 😀.The unlimited re-entry over a 48 hour period represents great value for money and I’m so pleased that you recognized this to share with future guests. Unique Experience for Nature Lovers
Had the back stage pass - struck very lucky having Kath as our guide. Incredibly knowledgeable and her enthusiasm was infectious. Although our visit was out of the breeding season Kath explained the process in great detail. Absolute bonus getting up close to the reptiles and fascinated by the locust House - on site fast food!
Thanks so much for taking the time to place a 5 star review and delighted that you enjoyed Backstage Pass 🎫 Tour with Kath. Love your comnents around our Locust House for the incredible Tuatara!

Kiwi rowi & tuatara. A must in the West Coast.
We did the guided visit. Steve (the guide) explained perfect all the details about the life of kiwi rowi and tuatara. We strongly recommend you to visit West Coast Wildlife Center! It's the only way to see real kiwis and tuataras. Highly recommended visit. It's the only way to see the kiwi rowi and the tuatara. The latter is one of the few animals still alive that came to live with the dinosaurs, a true relic of the past, less famous than the kiwi; but equally unique and worthy of protection by humans. It is advisable to take the guided tour because the Guide does it very well.
Thanks for taking the time to share your review and we are all thrilled that you enjoyed your experience. The VIP Backstage Pass with Steve was clearly a highlight and a personal guided tour is really worth it 🙏👍 Enjoy the rest of your time in beautiful Franz Josef ⭐️

Rare Rowi Kiwi and Glacier Exhibit!
This is a great rainy day activity. The centre has the very rare Rowi Kiwi. They are nocturnal so you are in the dark and you have to let your eyes adjust in order to see them. They have very long beaks and their nostrils are at the tip of their beaks. Rowi are local to Franz Josef and there is a huge effort to increase their numbers. We also saw a glacier exhibit featuring the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. These glaciers are two of the very few glaciers in the world that extend through temperate rainforest to areas around 300 metres.
Thank you so much for taking the time to personally share you experience and the team and I are thrilled that you really enjoyed your visit. To date we have 🐣 hatched and incubated over 371 rowi kiwi -in partnership with the Department of Conservation-meaning that around 71% of the rarest kiwi on the planet has passed through our facility 🙏

    Beautiful informative tour
I took a guided tour of the facilities, where they hatch Kiwi eggs. Very explanatory with guide information and videos. I came out very happy with my visit, but it’s not given. I also saw a tuatara a kind of reptile. Very interesting and indigenous to the NZ. Visit in English.
Thank you for sharing your review with future guests and delighted that you really enjoyed your visit. The VIP Backstage Pass is a really great way to spend time with our guide and go behind the scenes on a personal tour.As you were interested in NZ highly endangered wildlife and the work we are doing -in partnership with The Department of Conservation -to bring the worlds rarest kiwis back from the edge of extinction-then this tour was clearly beneficial.Thank you again for making the time to place a 5 ⭐️ review .🙏

Closest I ever got to a kiwi
I stopped here as part of a Gate 1 tour. This was the most thorough explanation of a Kiwi’s life cycle that I got on the trip so far, and it was also the closest we got to the kiwi itself as they were in an open enclosure you got to walk through. Very neat trip, and the gift shop was pretty expansive, too!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review with future guests and delighted that you really enjoyed your visit with us.Our wildlife rangers are really knowledgeable and we are indeed fortunate to have so many dedicated and enthusiastic team members.Your 5 star rating is very much appreciate 🐣👍🙏

Myself and my partner wanted to see a real live kiwi whilst we were holidaying in NZ - being the most iconic bird in the country! We missed several opportunities in the North island before coming across this lovely little place. The price of entry goes towards their amazing project of kiwi conservation with the rarest kiwi in the world, and also means you can go back at any point within a 24hour time period.

The kiwis are hatched at the centre and then 'accustomed' to life without human intervention by living in a nocturnal simulated environment - the keepers spread live food around the enclosure to encourage foraging behaviours and nocturnal noises are played quietly overhead. We waited in the dark for a little while before we could work out where the little lady/dude was scuffling around looking for worms and eventually saw our first live kiwi! One of the keepers was good enough to come in and chat to us whilst we were there, explaining a little more about what they do and the plight of the kiwis.

This place is not suitable for the 'been there, got the tshirt' tourists - they would be better off going to a zoo. You can tell how passionate the team are for their work and it's a fascinating, educational experience that needs a little patience to get the best from. I really hope they achieve their goal.

To all the people complaining that the Kiwi birds are housed in a nocturnal dark environment and hard to see blahblah, you are probably the same kind of people who knock on the glass in aquariums to make the fish ‚do something‘ and have not understood the purpose and significance of this place. Yes, the entrance fee is high but for this you get to see a Kiwi bird, something which you very rarely come across in the wild and you get to do this in a place that conserves and rescue these endangered birds, your entrance fee is for a great cause!

I went there today because my heli flight was postponed due to bad weather, and I loved this place. I took the backstage tour where I could see a Kiwi Chick and the hatchery in the centre. It was awesome and the guide was great with loads of info about the birds and the project. With the normal ticket you can also see a Kiwi bird up close, just be quiet and patient and it will run around and forage for food in front of you! I loved the care and respect the centre has for these special little birds and can recommend to anyone to see it. This is not a zoo, people! And it shouldn’t be! The birds are not exploited here but treated with respect, aiming to educate people and they do a wonderful job in that. I completely loved this experience!

Well worth the visit and do upgrade to the behind the scenes guided tour, costs a bit more but not heaps.
Behind the scenes you get a very informative and interactive talk about the Kiwi, a look at the incubation areas, if you are lucky maybe even a kiwi being born, we saw one just starting to break its shell, as well as two 2 week old Kiwi.
You also get up close with Tuatara and there feeding.
Very cool and well worth doing, the entry fee is valid for 24 hours so you can come and go as many time as you like.

Thanks for the 5 star review and the team and I are delighted that you enjoyed your visit. The VIP Backstage Pass Tour is a great upgrade option and it’s pretty special -but with limited availability so best to book early and online -if possible. We payed $80 for 2 adults to see 2 birds in a pitch black room. It was so hard to see the birds I would appreciate if they would turn up the brightness. I understand that the creatures are nocturnal but if you want to charge $80 you better make the customer feel like they have had an intimate experience with this bird. The rest of the centre is very outdated and the needs updating. $5 per person no more and then I would be happy for what they offer.

KIa ora Montana, Thanks for placing a review. It really does sound like you must have left our facility not realising that you have just had the privilege of seeing the worlds rarest kiwi -and that you cannot simply "turn up the brightness" in our kiwi nocturnal house -in order to give you a better viewing experience. Kiwi are only active in the dark and you really do need to take the time to stop, look, listen and engage -in order to get the most out of our award winning attraction. All our kiwi go back to live in the wild so we allow kiwi to behave as naturally as possible to suit themselves - rather than to suit us humans. You must have missed the glacier attraction, brand new Tuatara Encounter,Wildlife films and Wild West Coast storytelling areas ? Looks like you also needed to have upgraded your ticket to include the Kiwi and Tuatara Backstage Pass Tours in order to get that guided tour and intimate experience that you were looking for. Travel safely and enjoy the rest of your time in NZ.

This was an unexpected surprise. When planning our stay in Franz Josef I had not factored this in as a place to visit. However, as it rained for the 3 days we were staying it was a must do in door activity, and it exceeded all expectations. The nocturnal house is the best in NZ we have been to. There is no glass between you and the kiwis and we were able to spend 10-15 mins in there with no one else. A bonus of no overseas tourists. The 2 kiwis were active the whole time. With a 24 hour pass (as it was still raining the next day) we were able to just pay the extra and did the behind the scenes tour. So informative. Learned all about the Rowi kiwi and how it is only found in the Okarito forest. Saw 2 kiwi chicks and now very envious to see posts on FB that chicks have been released into the nocturnal enclosure. The wildlife centre do an amazing job for kiwi conservation.

My husband went quad biking and I thought taking the little one to see a kiwi birds would be a nice family activity. Paid $40 to go in and it is a black room where with a 1yr old child it is impossible to see the bird. You need to have a lot of patience and stand in complete silence to have any hope of a glimpse of it in the dark. I told the ladies at the counter that I was here to show my 1year old a kiwi, they could have easily advised that it’s so dark a child won’t see it and you need to be silent so it’s not the best for a toddler. No one shares this information so it was a complete waste of money. I then needed a child change room and they didn’t have one and were very rude when I asked if I could come back after changing him and if they knew where I could change him. Overall it was a horrible experience.

Kia ora Airlie Thanks for taking the time to place feedback and the team and are are pretty disappointed by your response and clearly our facility was not for you or your one year old child. Kiwi are a nocturnal bird and you do need to take the time to stop, look and listen quietly in order for the birds to feel comfortable foraging around as they do in the wild. If you mention to the team that you are struggling to see the worlds rarest kiwi (rowi) then our wildlife staff will take you back into the nocturnal room with a special infa-red torch to make the viewing experience exceptional. Your one year old child (who went in for free )and yourself would have needed to be very quiet in order for this to happen and because there a very low light levels this might have been challenging. Perhaps you were expected some kind of a zoo experience ? All our kiwi go back to live permanently in the wild so we are very very different to this. The viewing experience can be fantastic for young children and the great news is that the ticket you purchased is valid for 24 hours so come on back in as many times as you like over this time period and there is no additional cost!. We do have a children’s change table available in our larger disabled toilet . Perhaps you could have missed the kids tour, the indoor glacier attraction, live tuatara encounter.and films with West Coast Storytelling areas ? Do come back in and visit again and we would be delighted to take you personally back through our award winning facility.

Visited the wildlife centre under the Back to the Future $199 package where you get a night at the Rainforest Retreat, entry to this place and a helicopter ride.
I though that this would be a typical kiwi viewing experience behind glass but no. A walkway through the kiwi habitat with a barrier up to your waist. I have done this twice now. Once with my partner and son in August and this time I dragged my parents from Auckland here. The first time the kiwis in the enclosure were about to be released into the wild. They were ready to go. One came right up to the barrier and slid his beak right up the barrier to sus us out. We could have easily patted him but didn’t know if we should and quite honestly just froze as scared we would scare him off. But it seemed like he just gave up on us in disgust that we weren’t helping him to escape and lost interest. He was definitely ready for the wild. This time they again had 2 kiwis in there, but they had only been in there for a couple of weeks. They were a couple of months old. One thought he was road runner and had us utterly amused with his antics racing back and forward, trying to pick fights with the other one. The sensible on (I presume it was a female) came pretty close to the barrier and we watched how she fed and drank water. Really interesting how they put their whole long beak into the water to suck it up. First time I realised how much personality and antics kiwis actually have. Not the dull, shy, boring birds we are led to believe. So feel really privileged to finally see kiwis and their personalities first hand. It’s taken me 50 years and really exceeded my expectations.
The overall centre is great with an interactive glacier part which was really good too and a fab tuatara enclosure with 4-6 tuataras. Really big so we spent ages there too and enjoyed watching them get fed. They go from not moving at all to knowing feeding time is coming and moving closer to the feeding place and then you really see them move!
However for me the kiwis were the highlight and you can go and see them as many times as you want during a 24 hour period. We went through a few times.
Thank you to all the staff at the wildlife centre for your work you do with these endangered species. It is truly humbling to hear about all the work you are doing to save the kiwi. Again can’t recommend this place enough!!

We booked the afternoon VIP Guided backstage tour for around $60 each. Usually we are on a tight budget and would thoroughly research “value for money” opinions on things like this but, being a wildlife conservation centre we decided that no matter what the tour was like it would be worth investing some money into kiwis regardless.

Laurie was a great guide and whilst we were out of season for eggs and chicks we got a look at the incubator room and “nursery” with a great load of information about kiwis and the work the centres/DOC are doing to increase their numbers.

We then went to see the Tuatara in their backstage enclosure and learnt loads about this 250 million year old DINOSAUR! So cool. Laurie had one that she held so we could get a closer look and whilst we were gutted we couldn’t have a hold too, it is absolutely understandable!

Due to being on the final tour of the day, we didn’t have time afterwards to look around the centre which I hadn’t anticipated. But we were given permission to renter the following day to see the bits we hadn’t a chance to see. (If you only have one day, I would suggest booking an earlier tour or doing the centre prior to the afternoon tour. I would have been very disappointed if we didn’t have time to go back).

We did get a quick sneak into the nocturnal exhibit and saw the 2 kiwis pecking away. They are quite hard to see but you get the idea at least. They are incredibly fascinating birds and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

If you like zoos you actually might be disappointed. But if you have a genuine interest in kiwis or just wildlife then you can’t go wrong. Learning about them was just as interesting for me as seeing them.

Now I desperately hope to see one in the wild!

The West Coast Wildlife Centre has been a highlight of my stay in the West Coast. All the staff I interacted with were friendly and helpful. The amount of information provided about the kiwi, the glaciers and the tuatara was so great. I was lucky enough to see two kiwi in the nocturnal room. I loved the glass bottom to the fence so you could crouch down and see the kiwi at their level. I did have to say to some other visitors to be quiet in there - it seemed like they thought it should be more like a zoo! For those with the respect and patience to see such a special bird - this is the next best thing to seeing one in the wild!

We went first thing in the morning due to the weather being a bit wet. What a great experience seeing the kiwi and tuatara plus all the other informative displays. We then finished off having a coffee and some beautiful home made goodies - Donna in the Cafe is your typical friendly "kiwi" who makes you feel at home and also will make you laugh. Highly recommend.
