    Fabulous Views & Ambiance
The beach is not overly populated, but that stated, recommended to arrive earlier in the morning. One - enjoy the beach with fewer people, but also be able to walk to the small beach and enjoy the sights. Overall a fabulous visit.

    Pretty beach
Stopped in at Makena Beach after some friends recommended we check it out. We wanted to snorkel or boogie board and as we found out, the snorkeling was OK but not fantastic and on the day we went the waves were breaking on shore. Unfortunately we didn't have a wonderful time doing the things we like the most but the beach was nonetheless, very pretty, clean and not overly crowded.

    Great Snorkeling Beach
This is a really good beach to come to for swimming, snorkeling and watching the sunset. We came here first thing in the morning one day and we were one of the only ones out there. The waves aren't that great for boogie boarding or surfing, but once you pass the break then the snorkeling is good. We loved this beach so much that we came back the next day later in the afternoon to swim and watch the sunset. There weren't too many people there at that time either.

    Not great for swimming
Very nice and large beach area. Not great for swimming as there is always a lot of surf. Three lifeguard stations. Have to pay to get in. $10.00 per car, $5.00 per person. Port a Potty is a ways from the beach. Very windy in the afternoon with the trade winds as is the case for most of the beaches.

    Now, About The Admission Fees
Depends on the day but during our visit the waves were manageable. Once we swam beyond the break there was plenty to see while snorkeling. I won't list them all but pretty common species and very beautiful. The beach was nice and there were lifeguards (3 stations) watching over the place. I would probably avoid this place if I had little kids because it does seem like the break was rough both times we stopped here. We arrived early and stayed most of the day - we left for lunch and returned to watch the sunset. Now, about the admission fee: $10 per car and $5 a person is silly when you can 1) park outside the entrance and walk in or 2) drive further down the road and find free parking towards the end of the park. You have exit and return privileges during the time you purchased which is nice. That said, the money does go to the parks department which overall helps keep this area clean and lifeguards on duty.

    Beautiful beach
The beach is very pretty and easy to get to. There is a paid parking lot and then it is a short walk to the beach. There is a nude portion of the beach, so keep that in mind if you walk up/over the rocks and back off of the main beach.

Nice to look at but rough undertow
This beach is nice but has a rough undertow. I would not drive any further than this beach. The road to LaPerouse Bay gets very narrow and there are not spots to turn around. In addition, the road is not wide enough for two cars. It is not picturesque so best to just avoid all together.

Let me start by saying I live in Southern California and know how to swim in surf. My 14 year old Son and I were looking for some actual waves to enjoy in the south half of the island. We heard this place has the waves. It did not disappoint! Yes you have to pay to park. We just showed up to swim and absolutely loved it. There was a nice shore break that we loved. The set waves could come in and some over 8 feet for sure. IF YOU ARE NOT A GOOD OCEAN SWIMMER, DONT SWIM HERE. This is a great spot to get hurt if you dont know what you are doing. One of the guards was hanging out with us and could tell we know how to handle surf. He said its the most dangerous beach on Maui. I completely see how. Now we were here on a moderate to large wave day. I can onlyi assume there are some small days that would be good for average people so I can say their reviews are wrong. On our day, you really needed to be careful and watch your outside for the big boys. It can be real hard to get out when it pulls you into a 10 foot shore break.

The sand is amazing, the views are great and water amazing. Just heed the warning I have and give it a shot. There was a surf break on the south side of the beach where a few surfing short boards.

Rip off. Didn’t realize it was a pay beach. Left my money and credit card at hotel ( because of risk of theft) didn’t want to worry about it at the beach. Parked taking a risk. Got ticketed

This is an incredibly dangerous beach. I’d been here many times to enjoy the waves when I lived on Maui. One day I got caught in a wave that shattered my leg into what the doctors called “cornflakes and bone dust,” and a “life-altering injury.” I was the 3rd Big Beach patient in the ER that day. When hospital staff asks what happened, all you need to say is Big Beach.

I’ve had 3 reconstructive surgeries. It’s been six months and I still cannot walk. It’s constant pain and I’m just waiting until it’s healed enough to do a total ankle replacement. And I’m lucky I wasn’t the one who broke my neck.

Please, do not take your kids here. Do not go in the water. This has literally been the worst year of my life and I’m glad I’m not paralyzed. There are so many better places to swim.

Pros: beautiful beach that was not as busy as others. Intense waves that crash in to the shore; my teens loved it but probably no good for little ones. Lifeguards on duty.

Cons: they charge tourists $10 a car to park, plus $5 for each person. We paid $40 for 6 of us to visit the beach for a few hours. No bathrooms or showers on the second lot side (not sure about 1st lot area)-if you’re going to make people pay those fees you should at least have a bathroom. Lots of other beautiful beaches in Maui that are free. The waves and currents are intense; we had planned on snorkeling and boogie boarding but we’re unable to with our kids. The waves just drove the boogie board right in to the sand and with the heavy currents I did not want my kids swimming out over their head.
