- spitzy135944 contributionsBest View is at the BottomThis is another one of the many gorgeous waterfalls in Iceland. Its pretty tall, powerful and impressive. I made the nearly 500 step climb to the top by the right side of the waterfall, expecting a spectacular view. It is a long upward climb, many stop along the way to catch their breath. I was truly disappointed, the view from the platform is nothing compared to the ground view. Certainly not worth all the effort. All you can see at this vantage point is a small side view of the falls. If you’re questioning making the climb, don’t feel bad if you don’t. You have the best view right in front of you!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- Leza HLondon, United Kingdom666 contributionsAbsolutely gorgeous, my favourite of the Icelandic waterfalls. We visited on a very overcast rainy early morning and this waterfall was still absolutely jaw dropping…possibly even more so as it looked so dramatic. Wear waterproofs if you want to walk up towards it as the spray of water will soak you. Absolutely beautiful place. You can easily park and then walk 5 minutes.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- Michael KLondon, United Kingdom551 contributionsAnother sensational waterfallOne of several sensational waterfalls reachable from Reykjavik. The water has a drop of 62m (cf Niagara, 57 m – though much wider) and cascades with a great roar. You soon get damp as you approach it. It was sunny for our visit which created a great and spectacular rainbow to one side of the fall in its spray. You can climb about 465 steep steps to one side to look down on it from above, but it’s quite a slog!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Nadina PNew York City, New York585 contributionsRainbows! You can't go behind this one, though it's one of the more accessible of the famous falls. You don't need to be fit or have proper gear to get to it, and it's very safe--no deep waters and few ways to get hurt. You can see that pretty clearly from the photo I attached. That said, I climbed the stairs alongside it and got to see the overhead view and got to see the rainbow from above. There are also a ton of trails and things around it. Close by, there's a restaurant that is pretty good, reasonably priced, and has reasonably priced lunches. Definitely don't skip!Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 November 2023
- Cloud1,348 contributionsBeautiful and differentVery beautiful waterfalls. Short way to reach the waterfalls at their bottom. The possibility exists to climb about 400 steps and see the waterfalls from the top. Make sure you wear waterproof clothes when visiting.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 November 2023
- SmileyMaiaMarlow, United Kingdom91 contributionsWonder-fallThe must-see waterfall by all means! This is something not to be missed when you visit Iceland. Make sure to wear waterproofs when you visit here, especially in winter you will get drenched when the wind changes and gets freezing. Warning though the path up the side of the cliff to go on the trail is not the sturdiest and when the wind picked up at the top, I felt like I was honestly hanging on for dear life. I would not recommend taking kids up to the top when it is windy.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023
- Bandit-OneLucerne, Switzerland10,512 contributionsImpressive dropThis is one of the major attractions here in Iceland. It's along the ring road and attracts lots of visitors. There's a huge parking lot right on site. Free of charge. And some shops and a public toilet. The fall is 60m high. A big drop carrying a lot of water. At least when we visited. You can get really close to the fall. So close that you will need some waterproof gear, except you like getting fully soaked. The spray is strong. Unlike Seljalandsfoss you can't walk behing the fall here. Seljalandsfoss for me was a bit more impressive even. But that doesn't make this a bad attraction. It IS an amazing sight. No wonder the fall and location was also used in the 8th season of Game of Thrones. But don't stop here at the fall and at the bottom. Follow the path and the stairs up. Ok, when it's windy (and it was), the stairs will swing slightly. But it's worth to get up there. Not just to see the fall from the top. That's fine and most visitors actually do just that and stop at the platform on top. But the path continues following the river upstream. You can hike for miles and miles. There are more waterfalls up here. It's unbelievable beautiful to walk along the valley up there. For us the prettiest spot we've seen in Iceland. And only a handful of visitors.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia20,004 contributionsAnother mighty fall in southern IcelandWhile Iceland has hundreds of waterfalls due to numerous streams and glacier melting, Skogafoss counts into one of 4 Iceland's big waterfalls. It's located on the southern Route 1, some 15 min drive after a similar Seljandsfoss. Skogafoss is similar in height, however wider than the latter one. Black lava stone and sand add up to beautiful scenery. You can climb to the top of the fall via a wooden stairway leading up, but we were unable to do that due to heavy rain all day which I deeply regret. Certainly a must stop on your Iceland tour.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 November 2023
- themaddog74313 contributionsBeautiful place, but please show respect for this natural environment. Before I start - please show respect for this area and STAY ON THE PATHS. We had a winter experience of Skogafoss and the ground was covered in snow and ice. (It was raining hard.) Be aware that Skogafoss is not suitable for disabled people. The waterfall was amazing and nice to see the ice around it. There are some steps to climb to get to the top of the waterfall and you will need a good degree of fitness to climb these. As I mentioned before, the ground and paths were very icy, so you will need to take care. One thing that disappointed me was the amount of self entitled people who felt that the signs instructing people to not leave the paths or walk on the grassy area did not apply to them as it is these people who are destroying the plants and mosses that may take 50 - 100 years to grow. If you are not capable of respecting this beautiful area, then I recommend you stay at home. Skogafoss is about a 90 minute to 2 hour drive from Reykjavik. I recommend leaving Reykjavik by 9am to avoid the crowds.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 January 2024
- mtanguloWashington DC, District of Columbia944 contributionsImpressive heightThe visit to this waterfall is part of the south coast tour. It’s a high fall and you can walk very close to it. You must wear waterproof clothing to remain dry. It’s a beautiful location, not hard to reach. It can be slippery if too cold and icyThere are also stairs to walk to the top of the waterfall. All the surroundings provide a beautiful scenery. A must see.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2024

This waterfall is exciting in that you walk up close and feel the mist and blowing water at you. The roar of the water also adds to the experience. We did see a rainbow the day we went since the sun was shining brightly. The experience was exhilarating!

This is probably the best of the waterfalls in Southern Iceland. This is a magnificent waterfall that you can walk up close to from the carpark. Close up you can feel the power and noise of the waterfall. Fot those with energy, you can climb up to higher viewing platforms. If you are planning to visit a south Iceland waterfall, it should be the 62 meter high Skogafoss waterfall.

This was our 2nd stop of Part 1 of the South Coast exploration. After leaving Seljalandfoss and Gljúfrabúi, you think you've seen enough waterfalls, and how different is this one going to be? Well, it's different! And not to be missed. What a sight! A short walk from the parking brings you at the foot of this majestic, awe inspiring waterfall.
There are steps (a little over 500 actually) that take you up tot he top, above the waterfall.
Definitely recommend stopping here on your visit to the South Coast! You may think that you don't need to stop at all the waterfalls, but this one is one you have to see. There may be less impressive waterfalls that will not be worth stopping at if you are short on time, but as you are putting together your itinerary, keep in mind Seljalandfoss and Gljúfrabúi, Skogafoss, Bruarfoss are not to be missed.

You can see this beauty from the road. However, once you walk up to it, you realize the power coming off of this magnificent waterfall. It was a sunny day when we visited, and there was a permanent rainbow in front of the waterfall. You need patience in order to get photos without other humans in front of the waterfall. There are stairs that will take you to the top of the waterfall if you're so inclined. This is a must-see for all who drive by, and seemed to be a stop on the bus tours as well.

Now this was a really spectacular waterfall compared to the likes of Seljandfoss. The even 62 metre drop is quite magnificent. The huge amount of spray it generates requires the time of great you see being blown in some of the pictures. It is also very easy to access from the Ring Road. I was quite annoyed when we were there at someone wearing a very bright jacket but when I look at the photos I took, the colour contrast actually helps with the perspective and shows the height of the falls.

Beautiful waterfall that you can see from the road. There are also several places to eat. I also noticed people camping. There is a museum right next to this and another waterfall so this is a stop that can take a long time if you endure all of it's surroundings. There are also restrooms.
Tip: I wouldn't waste your time climbing to the top unless you just have to. The beautiful view is from the ground.

When you patiently waits for the bus tours to go away, you can definitely have the waterfalls on your own. During winter, it can be freezing but the excitement of seeing the ice, the water, the double rainbow is priceless. Just be careful though, it can be quite slippery near the falls. So make sure you wear appropriate shoes if you dare near the falls. A must visit when you are in Iceland.

Spectacular! This beautiful waterfall is very tall and easy to walk to from the parking lot. Camping is available near the waterfall if you want to camp for the night.
We did not do the stairs to the top but greatly enjoyed the waterfall in the morning and then stopped by again in the lat day.
This water fall often gives some great rainbows in the sunshine

This waterfall is always amazing - I know lots of them are, but the power here, the drop, the vertical wall, the little river both on the upper level and lower level, the fact there are stairs/ramp to go up... the free parking lot, and did I mention big chance to see a rainbow? It's a popular and busy place but somehow it never feels overcrowded
I would recommend not making this your first stop of the morning as portion of it will be in a shade, give it some light so the rainbows and colors can show up better - so plan your itinerary accordingly.
TIP: Restrooms are available here but for a fee - some restaurants in the area too, didn't try any so can't speak of the quality

Skógafoss is one of the most famous and largest waterfalls on the South Coast. You can walk right up to the waterfall, following a flat trail, but I would definitely recommend some waterproof clothing like a jacket as the sprayage is quite strong. Because of the thick mist of water, rainbows are abundantly produced on sunny days. During my visit, we got to see a double rainbow at the base of the falls.
If you are feeling a challenge, there is a very long staircase you can climb to see the views from atop. The staircase is quite narrow and can accommodate a single file of people going up and another file of people going down the stairs. There is also a hand rail on one side of the stairs, so I would advise going down very carefully as the descent is pretty steep.
The parking lot is fairly large and free, though some of the toilets are not. There is also a campsite nearby too.

Hi, me and some friends wish to visit here on Friday as we have nothing planned for that afternoon. Due to our flight arrival, we will probably only arrive at the waterfall at 4:30/4:45. Can anyone advise would that be too late to see anything or would it still be worth visiting with limited daylight?

I am interested in car rental experience
Written 28 August 2019
I booked ahead of time with Sixt. The car was good... but they did use a lot of upsell tactics. "Sandstorm damage" ... they said was highly recommended if traveling to the south. We encountered nothing but pleasant drizzle. Aside from that, the company was descent.

If it’s just at ground level 30 mins should be adequate. If you want to reach the upper levels allocate 1& 1/2 hours to 2 hours dependent on your exploring needs.

Is it possible to visit Skogafoss in January via 4wd vehicle?
Written 19 September 2018
As above, I don't think you will have any issues visiting unless there is some really unfortunate weather.
Written 18 February 2019
Is it possible to park the car overnight (2 nights)? If yes, how much does it cost and how save is it? Thanks a lot!
Written 6 May 2018
Hello there. There is no overnight parking on Skogáfoss. There are signs everywhere that warn you parking after 7:00PM is prohibited. There are, however, a campsite and a hotel in the vicinity, just minutes away from the waterfall. The campsite is about 1500kr. and the hotel rates change depending on the season. Hope this information helps.

Is it there electricity? I need to charge my cameras and drones batteries, so I'm looking the best camping around this area to stay. Could you tell me if there is enough connections for it (does each spot has its connection?) Is this camping the best around for that?
Written 21 January 2018
Not sure if there is electricity availble to use - there is a modern cafe nearby and, within the camping ground a hut for facilities (showers and toilets) which may have shaver outlets. If you spoke to the folk in the cafe I'm sure you could come to some arrangement!

Can you tell me please. When is a good time of year to visit Skogafoss.
Many thanks
