About
MudShark is a small adventure and outdoors company that operates from Hella in South Iceland. We offer private guided tours in South Iceland either tailor-made or prepackaged. Super Jeep tours to Landmannalaugar or Thorsmork on our Land Rover Defender are our most popular tours. We also organize short fishing trips to highland lakes close to Landmannalaugar. Another tour that is only offered by MudShark tours is an educational eco tour on the state of ecosystems of Iceland, degradation and ecological restoration with a PhD botanist (all year). In winter, we can take you on a Northern lights hunting tour into the mountains. Lastly we offer a relaxed 2 hr. walk-about in Hella village, the hometown of MudShark's owner (all year). In our tours, experienced guides pick you up at hotels in the Hella-Hvolsvollur region and take you touring.

Overall 9/10

What can I say; mudshark.is is an amazing tour operator. Magnus is a professional and more importantly a caring individual. The vehicle that he uses is an all wheel drive luxury vehicle.
Magnus is a local and part of one of the oldest institutions of Iceland, the soil preservation society. He is very knowledgeable and if you ask a question he cannot answer he does not come back with an opinion he will do his research and then answer you.
We booked three tours with mudshark and due to safety reasons we had to change one of them due to treacherous roads. Magnus was a timely individual and if he says he would meet you at 9am he is normally in the lobby waiting for you at 8.45am.
With Magnus being a local and being good at negotiation we learnt the following:-
1 If a restaurant is fully booked, it’s not any more with Magnus charisma on the locals.
2 More importantly he is a LOCAL so he knows spots of beauty that other tour operators will not cover with you. Magnus is always prepared to stop for you, if you are a clicky finger camera operator. Try doing that on a tour bus not possible.
The tours were good and on some days were longer and more bespoke to us, we even tried the local fermented fish that Iceland is famous for hákarl. No you do not need to go to any famous or fancy restaurant to find the product. All you need is a good local shop who sells this in small tubs or larger if you end up enjoying the taste at next to nothing prices. The best way to describe it will be a firm cube of cheese and then when you swallow it you get a massive blast of ammonia through your nasal passage way (imagine smelling salts or the old style hair dyes).
South coast: - Wow! Simply wow. I do not want to say too much but Magnus has a good eye for detail especially with viewpoints. I do not want to spoil this tour for you but you must book it. The black sand beach is simply beautiful and very powerful there was one instance where I was going to take a photo and Magnus asked me not to go any further for fear of my safety.
Golden Circle: - a must to see the famous landmarks of Iceland, when we got to slippery areas Magnus was worried about our safety and offered us extra walking grips for our shoes.
Northern lights: - Magnus is simply amazing. All I can say is wow. I have knocked one off the bucket list I have seen the aurora borealis in all its glory. No not just in the more common green or the rare gold but in the rarest colour red  I could not believe our luck. I was more in awe because Magnus has a good eye for photography and also knew where to go to show contrast with the foreground. Also by going out to live in the country the amount of light pollution is minimal and my oh my you will not believe the number of stars that are actually above our heads.
I honestly cannot recommend mudshark tours enough and my brother and I look forward to booking a few more tours with him in the summer when we decide to go back.
If you do ever book with him just mention my review as what lead you to book with him.
Finally, before I forget his homemade peppermint tea is amazing something that I could happily drink all day especially in the cold.

Magnus is a botanist and ecologist with a vast knowledge of Iceland and it's history. Combine that with the places he took us to and you couldn't ask for a better tour. We learned so much from him to better understand what we were visiting, why the landscape is the way it is. We'd recommend his tour to everyone. 10/10.

We abandoned thoughts of self touring after such extreme weather that roads were closing everywhere and trips being cancelled. Magnus picked us up from our Hotel (ranga) and took us for a great day out. Lots of interesting anecdotes, waterfalls , beaches, lovely lunch and tea and biscuits to warm us up in the car at regular intervals. Magnus felt like a friend after ten minutes and if we come back we will definitely do some fishing with him too.

We just ended a week in Iceland by spending our final day with Magnus in the Highlands exploring and fishing for trout. My wife is not as excited about fishing as I am so I booked this trip because the reviews made it sound like it was not all about fishing, but also a chance to see some unique landscapes and learn about this amazing island. We could not have been happier with our choice. Magnus is extremely knowledgeable, personable, and a really fun guide. We both caught fish, learned a lot about geology and erosion, and just had a great time overall. Also if you want to know about elves, sea cows, and zucchini--Magnus is your guy!

We had a great day with Magnus. Super fun cruising around in in the Land Rover and saw some outrageous landscapes. We took a few hour hike to break up the day. Learned a ton about the geology and ecology of the area. Magnus obviously very much enjoys what he does and it shows.

We had a brilliant day out with Magnus, he was a great host; friendly, funny and very knowledgeable! We booked the Golden Circle tour but was also taken to a host of other Icelandic attractions, amongst which included a lovely lunch at a tomato farm! One of our best days in Iceland :-)

We, too, relied on previous reviews of Magnus's tour, and we were so happy we booked with him. He gave us the best day of our whole trip! We can assure readers that he made the day special for each member of our family, and ensured our comfort and enjoyment. The stories he told us about everything supplemented what we'd read in guidebooks in a unique and enriching way. In the course of a full day we off-roaded through water, explored waterfalls, hiked to a beautiful peak, and got up close with the incredible nature that Iceland offers. Our experience gave us opportunities to see and do things we would not have been able to otherwise. We will never forget this magical day. Thank you, Magnus!

Like everyone else, before travelling to Iceland I read all the reviews and hand picked Magnus as our guide for the Landmannalaugar area. So I knew that he was more than good in his knowledge of the area and so on. Just like all the reviews said , Magnus drove us to beautiful parts of the vast area which included clear blue lakes, rhyolite mountains, craters, geothermal activity and so on. The part that I enjoyed the most was hiking the popular trail. I am a 57 years old and not in great physical shape. I enjoy hiking but able to do only the easy to moderate level. So when Magnus mentioned doing this hike I expressed my limitations. It was mid June and the roads to Landmannalaugar had just opened. The entrance to the popular trail was under snow , so an alternate entrance which requires climbing over rocks had to be used. There was no way I could have done that trail without Magnus’s help and guidance. He knew exactly when I needed help, would show me exactly where to step and even pulled me up over a couple of steep rocks. All the time he made he feel I could have done it on my own (I don’t think I could have). Parts of the trail (some going uphill and some downhill) was still covered in snow. The sights on the trail were simply awesome. Picture perfect. Because of Magnus’s encouragement and ability to guide people like me I was able to see this beautiful land. Had I skipped this hike, I would have kicked myself when I saw the pictures which my husband and son had taken. Fantastic guide and magnificent land.

We went out with Magnus for an afternoon in May. He was fantastic from our first contact over e-mail- very one on one service, quick response time, flexibility in planning. On the day of our tour to the Black Beach he even offered up a free cancellation as the weather was horrendous- it was so windy and rainy we physically couldn’t even get out of the car in some places. We declined the generous offer as we had to do something to keep busy and are so glad we did. Magnus took us all around Hella, where he grew up, and we learned far more than we ever could by reading a travel book. He told stories ranging from local gossip and history, geology, climate, agriculture, wildlife- you name it. We even made it to the beach which was wild. It will now be a great memory instead of a washed out day. Thank you Magnus!

We booked a tour with Magnús to Landmannalaugar in the Icelandic highlands in July 2017. This trip was one of the highlights of our trip to south Iceland. Magnús was prompt, communicative, extremely knowledgeable, outgoing and fun to be with. We got to see one of the more breathtaking areas of a jaw-dropping beautiful country. What's more, Magnús answered all of our many questions, not just about the tour but about Iceland. We enjoyed his knowledge, friendliness and his yummy chocolate raisins. If you are thinking of visiting this magnificent area, Magnús is definitely the right guide to take you there. We know that when we come back to Iceland (and we will) we will engage Magnús again for another trip in this wonderful country.
