My husband and I stopped at a couple places around the area because our flight arrived at 6 am and we couldn't check into our hotel yet. The place is close to the airport (45 minutes). We arrived while it was still dark out, but just hearing the sounds of the water was interesting. We ended up waiting until the sun started to come up so we could see more of the detail.

Definitely worth a visit, the landscape is very dramatic with the guises, the coast line, lighthouse and sea all coming together. It has an interesting little story of how a family set up home there, you can still see the foundations of the house.
Also its well worth going 2 minutes down the road when you've done, there's a viewing platform where you can see naturally formed bathing pools and watch the waves crash against the shore.

Our first day in Iceland was not a full day. We landed around noon, ate lunch and then visited places around Reykjanes Peninsula. Gunnuhver Hot Springs was our second stop, following Bridge Between Continents. It was cool to see! There is a ramp from where you can view everything. Make sure you have a waterproof jacket and be prepared for the smell!

I definitely recommend spending some time visiting Reykjanes Peninsula and the unusual sights. May not be as spectacular as the sights on the South, or photogenic, but they are unusual and worth seeing.
In case you are interested, these are the sights we hit on our tour of the Reykjanes Peninsula: Bridge Between Continents, Gunnuhver Hot Springs, Reykjanes Lighthouse, Brimketill Lava Rock, Krísuvíkurberg, Krysuvik geothermal area (Seltún, Kleifarvatn and Grænavatn).

Driving up to the hot springs it looked really large but when you are there it is small. Yellowstone is much more impressive. There is a really nice walk way to view but a previous walkway is till they’re broken down and in the hot springs which takes away the beauty. Why did they not remove this. But a nice walk and yiu can choose to walk all the way to the lighthouse or drive to to it.

We visited the hot springs in February 2023. It is easy to drive to from Reykjavik, just check the weather/road conditions beforehand if you are visiting in the winter. Most of the grounds were snow covered but you could smell and see the hot spring and steam coming off of it. A nice, free experience!

A wonderful place where hot springs come to the surface in the form of mini geysers. We were there in the winter, in minus temperatures, so the bursting water vapor froze and settled in the area. Beautiful! In the distance, the Reykjanes lighthouse and a modern thermal power plant.

We rented a car and drove to the springs. The ride was easy, even at 3:00 am in the rain. We had planned on going to the blue lagoon but the flight was delayed and the lagoon was closed.

Plan B was still fun. We drove by a few light houses, stopped at the beach and did some walking on Mars?? Check out Iceland meets space.

A really impressive place to stop and see such a fantastic sight. We took a drive down the coast and stopped to take some pics and have a nosy. Our little girl was so excited. You don’t need long but it’s a must see.

This was a little stop, you don't need much time here in my opinion. Interesting to see the different colours of the landscape and the water spouting. There's a little walk if you fancy it to get other perspectives, but you can equally just have a look from the viewing platform just up from the car park. There's a plaque there that explains the alleged legend associated with this landmark. Parking is free too.

It was our first geothermal area ever, so it made an impression. It's close by Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon and it's easily combined with some other sights around the area. Iceland has much bigger and more beautiful areas like this (e.g. Geysir), so if you plan to travel further then this is not necessarily a must see.
