Neighbourhood: Tremé
That sound? That flavor? That certain je ne sais quoi that lets you known you’re in “Nawlins” and nowhere else? It’s all good and in broad abundance on the streets of Tremé, where so much of what’s considered to be the very best of New Orleans culture and tradition is, put simply, just how people go about their daily lives in this historic part of town. As one of America’s oldest African-American neighborhoods and among the nation’s first established residential areas for free people of color, Tremé’s significant heritage and contribution cannot be understated. This is especially the case when considering some of Tremé’s most famous residents, most notably jazz great Louis Armstrong. For full flavored food, funky and jazzed up music, and vibrant street life presented with homegrown pride, you can’t beat a visit to Tremé.

Our first stop was to visit a visitor center to get maps of the city. The gal there said it was the cheapest place to park-$5 dollars per day so we parked our car there as well. It is a good location for a walk around the quarter and 5 or so blocks down you can catch all of the trolleys.

This place is worth a visit when you come to New Orleans, it is almost a great place to walk to on your first day, not only will you see a history of the station, you also get one of the area, as well as local traditions, restaurants etc. There is a giftshop, a coffee shop, clean restrooms and right next door to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. City tours depart from here, the slowest part is the printing of your ticket, allow extra time for this or you will be late for your tour.

Staff mostly friendly. Source of touristy trap hop on hop off tours - did not book any other than the St Louis Cemetery tour here. Small "museum" related to building and local hustory. Includes gift shop and small coffee bar. Clean restrooms

This is a nice visitor center with air conditioning and clean restrooms. We sat for a minute, on the train station bench, caught our breath and then looked at the train items from yesteryear and of course a gift shop. Everyone was very friendly,

To be honest, we found this place totally by accident. We had just come from visiting Louis Armstrong Park and were looking for a public bathroom. Usually, gas stations are a reliable desperation bathroom pit stop, but not in New Orleans. Public restrooms are not that available in New Orleans. We first stopped at a gas station along Rampart Street, but they had none. Further down the road, we saw a fairly large Chevron station. There should have been public bathrooms, given its size, but there were none! But there was a very helpful person working there that pointed to Basin St. Station tourist info center across Basin Street from them. So grateful to her! It was close by and easy to get to.
I could see right away that they had tours available. My wife and I do not usually do tours, but if we did, this place's tours actually looked interesting. Time didn't really allow for them though. We were more or less passing through New Orleans, not staying overnight.
So, we used the public restrooms, which were immaculately clean. In addition, there was a small food service place there. There were history info boards too. But it was the gift shop that really stood out. Nice selection, all New Orleans related. Reasonable prices. No big crowds. In fact, very few people at the time. We picked up a few iconic souvenirs to remember New Orleans by.
So, if you are in New Orleans and want a tour, this looks like a great place for that. If you want some souvenirs, this is a great place. And if you desperately need a bathroom, this is the place!

This is the building to meet to take the Saint Louis No1 Cemetery but it is also a great place to look at as well. There is a really interesting display inside, Cafe and gift shop. It is worth to get to your tour early and look around or pop in after to get out of the heat and learn a little more about the area.

Myself and my husband went in to get directions and help on the local area and the famous cemetery. All staff very helpful, especially Lucille who helped us navigate our day out, and the ladies on the tills at the shop.
My husband bought a ticket for the Cemetery tour. I stayed in the centre and looked at the displays and photos of New Orleans.

Our tour guide Jayme was very knowledgeable and gave a good tour. He made me feel relaxed and he was approachable to ask questions. He had a funny sense of humor that he snuck in and could easily be missed if you weren't paying close attention.

This tour was super interesting. It was a nice mix of unique New Orleans cemetery history and specific “celebrity” tombs. Our guide, Alan, was so knowledgeable and able to answer every single question we had. It’s very hot and sunny, at least in February, so I do recommend bringing water bottles to stay as cool as possible while you’re outside enjoying this tour!
