Brooklyn Navy Yard is a huge site with a long history stretching back to the beginning of the 19th century and was active until the mid 1960s. After some ups and downs it now seems to be a thriving home for various businesses and industries again, and one of the old buildings is dedicated to a free exhibition of the yard's history. It was bigger than I expected, spread over 3 floors. There are some model ships and a few artefacts but most of the displays consist of photographs and written text - all very interesting though, especially the timeline by the entrance. I wish more of the "old" site was visitable - I was interested to read about the large former hospital complex in the yard, and apparently many of these historic buildings are still standing but derelict. It is around a 20 minute walk to York St subway station, but I went there by ferry from Wall St pier (the Astoria ferry route) - it was about 10 minutes' sailing then a 10 minute walk through the navy yard to get the the exhibition building.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our recent two hour tour, which began at the free Navy Yard Museum in Building 92. Alex, our tour guide, had wonderful stories to tell, fascinating information, and a good delivery. We rode on a refurbished school bus for the biggest distances, but plenty of time was spent up close to dry docks, modern buildings and Civil War era sites. The tour of the Civil War Naval hospital grounds was amazing, and the determination of the City to make the Navy Yard pay its way while it preserves the land and character of the site is noble. Why the City sold the Commandant's historic house to a private citizen is beyond belief, but that is part of the historical perspective of this unusual tour. Plus it's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Brooklyn. My husband and I are real New Yorkers and neither of us had ever taken this tour. IT IS NOT FOR TOURISTS ONLY! New Yorkers will definitely enjoy the history of this major part of their home city. Turn Stile Tours even recommended restaurants for us in the neighborhood for lunch before the tour, and spending some time at the top of Fort Greene Park was a delight.

Good starting point to learn about the history and current tenants of the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the building‘s exhibition space. Brooklyn Roasting has a spacious Coffee Shop in the building. We usually come for their events and tours.

Went here with my book club... we had read the book Brooklyn and this was a tie in... our tour was very interesting, organized and well done.. I found it particularly interesting as my uncle was stationed here during WWII and my mom and my aunt (his future wife) used to travel all the way from CT to visit him for maybe a 1/2 hour he had off... there are wonderful murals and pictures in the main Museum building (building 92) and it was very interesting to see the places where ships are even to this day are being repaired.. The Yard is right on the river in a sort of 'cove' much of which was filled in to make the yard and the piers.. I think it is essential to be a part of a tour if you wish to go here.. there is a whisky brewery and they do tours and tastings.. There is a movie studio (where Boardwalk Empire was filmed. and also a movie studio which is part of Brooklyn College... but I do not believe these are open to the public at any time.. you can enquire... the old Commandant's house on the hill can be viewed only from the outside as it is privately owned.. I thought the tour was well worth it.. We used Turnstile which is affiliated with the Navy Yard and is very good... Our guide was very knowledgable and could not have been nicer.. (probably not a good place for young children)

This museum is FREE. It has an excellent history of the development of Brooklyn as well as the history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and its influence on medicine, impact on battles, and other important developments over the years. I would not recommend walking there, though. Public transportation is best - we walked through one area that didn't seem very safe.

Interesting for people who like history, technology or environmental issues. Tour is well run with a knowledgable guide and lots of facts and stories. The history of the navy yard also gives insight to the ever changing Brooklyn, right up until today.

I didn't take a bus/bike tour of the whole facility, although I will like to in the future, so I have no opinion on that. But the building itself was a great experience. I arrived at BLDG 92 at 5 PM on Saturday- it closes at 6- so I had an hour to go to as as much of the exhibit as possible. I knew this place was off the grid and because of that didn't get as much traffic as other venues. Nonetheless, I was surprised to see that I was thee ONLY person in the whole building who wasn't an employee. Honestly, that is probably what made the exhibit more enjoyable. I imagine one would get a similar experience at a place like the Met after closing hours when the place isn't teeming with tourist, background noise, and baby carriages. Just the peace and tranquility to really enjoy and take in the place. The only thing putting me off ease was the fact that I had less than an hour to get through 3 floors.
The facility itself was very clean, green ( leeds certified) and shaped like a donut with the staircase leading up the middle. There is a lot of text on the wall to read- so if you are a reader I would give yourself about 2 hours to get through the exhibit. I tend to jump around and glance, taken many pictures as I advance so an hours time was easier to achieve for me. All the videos and audio stations worked and the use of space was implemented very well. The 1st floor was more about the history of the actual place, the 2nd floor was more about the people who work there, and the last floor was less about history but more about modern day innovations and the greater community.
The Brooklyn Navy yard is a very interesting place and I was happen to see that not all the manufacturing jobs went off overseas. And for the cheap price of free, I definitely recommend this place for a visit.Don't forget to leave a small donation for the cause.

What a fascinating experience! I knew almost nothing about the rich history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, or its demise and renewal. The Building 92 museum is welcoming, interesting, and nicely laid out. I was delighted to learn about the Development Corporation's efforts to bring new life to a location with such rich history, and I applaud its commitment to environmental architecture and design. After spending time at the museum, my adult son (a Brooklynite) and I took the two-hour Turnstile Tour. (Note: Trip Advisor's categories don't allow for "adult son," so I've selected Friends.) Our guide, Doug, is extraordinarily knowledgeable about history, sustainability, and so much more. We couldn't have asked for a more engaging experience. The fact that we happened to visit the day before Veterans Day made it all the more poignant. My highest recommendation!
