- LeonhknyHong Kong, China14,185 contributionsGetting better and betterNew York City's metro system is in a much better shape now. Yes, it is difficult to navigate for first-time travelers and some stations remain sketchy. On the other hand, cars are newer and stations are becoming more accessible and user-friendly. Anyway, tourists need it to explore the Big Apple.Visited December 2022Written 12 December 2022
- Stanley SWinter Garden, Florida531 contributionsFast, mostly, but still badDirty, inefficient and the only real way to get around the city and this is from someone who traveled the various lines for years when we lived and worked up north. It is getting expensive but still less than a taxi. Don't even think about getting on one of the awful busses. I only gave it a second star because it is quick (most of the time) and less costly than other modes of transport in the city. Fogettabout it on weekends when services are rerouted and disrupted. You have no idea whee you are going and how to get there since no one works in the boots anymore. An antiquated system for use by way too many people it has no future but to get worse.Visited December 2022Written 17 December 2022
- Carla LDublin, Ireland2 contributionsFlawed but overall goodEasy to navigate after a while, worth spending time reviewing maps before you travel. Level of people clearly on drugs and suffering mental health issues is concerning. Inappropriate for young children to be exposed to this daily. MTA staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. Such a convenient method of transport through NYC. As we were travelling with a stroller we spent a lot of time in lifts and more then once lifts had been soiled and very dirty.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2022
- amyrobb54Evansville, Indiana5 contributionsNew York SubwayThis was the 2nd time I’ve used the subway in New York. I was pleasantly surprised, by the folks that gave their seat up, because I was using a cane. Not everyone was sociable, but there were people that would talk to me, and I like to talk! There were a couple of areas that someone had urinated in, (mostly the corner before you got on the elevator), but otherwise, it was clean and there wasn’t trash lying around, so I was pleasantly surprised! With COVID-19, and everything else going around, (it was December, coughs, colds, etc), so after using the handrails with going up stairs, I used gloves and then I sanitized my hands! When we left, it was shoulder to shoulder because it was rush hour, but people still talked to others. I felt perfectly safe and at no time, was I ever afraid, and we saw many security people, so that helped a lot!Visited December 2022Written 9 January 2023
- Pam AdamsGreenwater Lake, Canada4 contributionsScam WarningWe used the subway a lot, however it isn’t as easy as say, the Tube maps in London, to follow. Be aware…..I was scammed when I was buying a Metro Pass. I had just put my card in and a guy flew in and quickly said that was the wrong machine. He said i needed cash which i produced, meanwhile another guy bought a pass on the other machine that i had put my card in. Don’t let anyone help you, you can figure it out!!Visited January 2023Written 19 January 2023
- SimonBelfast, United Kingdom173 contributionsDisgustingI have been in many underground transport systems across the world but I have never experienced anything as filthy as the New York system. The dirt of the actual trains, the seats, floors etc. The rubbish on platforms and lifts was disgusting and the constant smell of urine, faeces and cannabis was unbelievable. Lots of the stations are not disabled friendly so had have my wheelchair carried up and down flights of stairs. People were standing injecting and sharing needles openly. Given the number of stations that had NYPD presence, I was shocked by the open drug use. I would not recommend this as a means of travel if you have children with you as the sites we saw of people injecting, urinating etc was an eye opener.Visited April 2023Written 18 April 2023
- cardinalgirl9Hendersonville, North Carolina54 contributionsStay Off the Subway DisgustingI was warned in advance not to ride the subway! It had to be the most filthy place I have ever been. The only reason we rode it was to get from Wall Street to Times Square quickly for a show. I removed all visible jewelry and tried to just look normal and not a tourist. There were other people onboard who were obviously not tourist and just working folks. The subway station was beyond nasty. People had urinated in areas and the urinate had just pooled up. The stench of urine reeked as you enter the subway. Do yourself a favor and Uber or use a taxi.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 May 2023

Now, I see many illegal sellers inside any stations to sell fruits etc. It reminded me of Mayor Guiliani’s era when he kicked and cleaned up the criminal and fake product sellers everywhere. I think NY need another Giuliani to make NY cleaner from poor and illegals people!Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 29 August 2023

Assuming so, we payed the ticket and went in the wrong direction entrance. When returning to JFK, by subway, get off from the subway on the second to the last stop, to transfer to the airport train. Not at the very last stop.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023

Complex but efficient. Felt safe. People from all walks of life seem to use the subway. People were comfortable in brining children on the subway.

We were a little bit nervous about travelling on the Metro, but having used it for two days whilst in NYC would definitely recommend it for getting round the city and seeing the various sights. For 2.75 dollars per trip, value for money. We used our debit cards all the time. The cost remains as $2.75 as long as you do not exit barriers. This allows you to connect to different routes without having to pay again. A one day 'hop on hop off bus would cost us $88. Use the Metro for sightseeing at a fraction of the cost.

I had heard some real horror stories about the New York Subway so it was with a little trepidation that I boarded my first Subway train from 59th Street Columbus.
Fortunately I had done a bit of homework beforehand by looking at various videos on Youtube to give me an idea of what to expect and potential pitfalls.
You can buy a Metrocard from a vending machine and this will cost $1 on top of whatever credit you put onto the card. You can also check your metrocard balance by putting it in machines which is useful. Alternatively you can pay for your fare by tapping your credit or debit card.
One of the top tips I found was to look for the chequered band on the wall opposite the platform as this is where the conductor is located on the train. This is really helpful as if you are unfamiliar you can ask someone who will be able to help you when the train arrives.
Whilst I was in New York I used the subway a few times to go to different destinations in Brooklyn, Queens and getting around Manhattan. As long as you keep your wits about you and mind your own business then travelling on the subway is just the same as travelling in many other cities like Paris, London or Toronto.

Why is it so difficult to pay for a trip on the NY subway? We couldn’t pay for more than one ticket at the ticket machines - kept getting a limit exceeded message - and we had the same problem when we tried to tap our credit card to get through the barrier. Had to rely on a kind NYPD officer to take pity on us and let us through the barrier. Also, what zip code is a visitor from outside USA supposed to enter and why do you need it anyway? Put us off using the subway.

I did use Uber from and to JFK airport for reliability, but I was able to visit many cities in a few days (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Harlem…… just to name a few) by just hopping on the Subway though. It is by far the cheapest, easiest & fastest way to get around NYC if you need to go anywhere! Bring cash and a debit card to get a metro card for single trips at one of the machines at the station. The cards only cost maybe $3 and some change. Pay close attention to the signs. You might think you’re going ~uptown~ when you were supposed to be going ~downtown~ like me. 🤦🏽♀️ But an operator let me get back on the train after letting them know what had happened, thankfully. They probably experience that all the time with travelers. Good Luck!

It gets you from A to B but not the cleanest or safest. Avoid during quiet periods. Reasonably cheap. There are not many staff around sometimes and not that easy to navigate. Have small bills as well for tickets.

Horrible experience. Very confusing as signs were not accurate. Ended up purchasing extra passes and then having to take an uber anyways.

Buy Pay Per Ride tickets which cost $1 plus $2.75 a ride and you can use a connecting train or bus for free as long as you don't go outside a turnstile. I would advise buying 1 each to save hassle of passing the Metrocard back at the turnstile coz sometimes you've got to swipe it twice and there's a small display that lets you know the balance on the card. Cards an be topped up at most stations using a debit or credit card, but it wouldn't accept my money card run by MasterCard,
Regarding asking for directions in the subway system, remember that most travellers are also tourists and in the same boat.

Bonjour,

Does each person have to have a pass? I am going to be in New York with two teens as well and wasn't sure.

I guess, if your teens are higher then 44 inches, there must be a metrocard for each of you. Magnetic ticket. You can choose to put some to e rather then value on metrocard. 5 day pass is a good choice
hola!

Coming to NY next month but flying into Newark airport . Can I buy my 7 day metro pass to get from the airport to soho or can I only get my metro card once I’m in Manhattan

The subway diesn’t Go out to Newark Airport. There is a train to Penn Station or a bus to Port Authority (at 42nd St and 8th Avenue). When you get into Manhattan, buy our subway card. If you will be travelling more than 10 subway journeys in total, the 7 day card is the cheapest option.. You have to pay be card. If yiu’re Not a US resident it will still ask for your zip code. Just press the enter key at that stage and it will skip that field.
It works splendidly. Have fun
