Neighbourhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

    Sunset point
Nice view of the sunset. The reception was well coordinated as well. I waited for few minutes or so, it's not bad at all for a sunset evening It's very cold on top so be covered, and don't forget an external battery for your phone because you're going to take a lot of photos one my best place in list
Thank you for this wonderful review! Great advice for our future visitors. We're so glad you enjoyed your visit and we hope to welcome you back soon!

    Great views
We booked the top of the rock for 7.00 on a Monday evening. Queuing to get in was simple and efficient. No problems going up to the lower viewing platform. There's a cafe to buy food and drink if you want. No problems going up to the top viewing platform. It was fairly busy, but you could get to the edge and take in the view, with a bit of patience. Top of the Rock gives great views of the empire state, central Park and the south of Manhattan island. Highly recommended. There are plenty of places to get something to eat in the Rockerfeller centre.
Hi there, thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience at Top of the Rock! We are thrilled to hear that you found the queuing process efficient and enjoyed the stunning views from both the lower and top viewing platforms. We appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back again soon!

Nice observatory in a convenient area to reach from Times Square
Nice observatory, recommended in the evening (given its night hours). Beautiful area (near Rockfeller Center) and great to reach from Times Square. At night, only the internal lights of the room annoy, which are reflected on the windows of the balcony: I would recommend a darker environment.

An incredible view of Central Park and the Empire State Building
With its stunning views of the Empire State Building and Central Park, it is one of the most beautiful peaks in NYC. We did it at nightfall in order to enjoy the sunset, the moment is extraordinary! Thinking about taking a sweater, it's very windy! Take the activity with the GO CITY Pass!

    A classic of the city
Viewpoint located in the famous Rockefeller Center building. The viewpoint is at the top of the building and is outdoors. It has several levels from which to observe the island of Manhattan with a 360 view of the whole environment. No obstacles to vision, thanks to its glass wall. Reservation is necessary before day and time, which can be obtained through the machines located at the entrance of the building.

    Great visit
Fantastic visit, not too busy and great views. We paid extra for the beam and the sky lift which was a great extra, yes it was an extra cost but worth it. Staff were friendly and got you through quickly. I would highly recommend going here over the Empire State which was overcrowded and seemed disorganised.

    Top in every sense!!!
Selected by my wife who had studied all the observatories in the city, it was really beautiful. The 360-degree view on the roof of Rockfeller Plaza is really fantastic and better than many others starting from the Empire that is nicer to see than to stand on it. Looking south, beautiful views of Midtown with Empire (really spectacular) taking over. Unfortunately you can see little of the Chrysler Building but for everything else it is breathtaking. Looking north instead, you can see everything Central Park. The vision really blows your mind. Also on the Top there is a nice bar that turns the observation deck into a real rooftop, so you can enjoy a cocktail or a drink while admiring the most beautiful skyline in the USA and beyond.
Thank you, Re! We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed your visit and the breathtaking views from the rooftop at Rockefeller Plaza. It’s great to know that the experience left you speechless and that you appreciated the bar for a perfect touch. We hope to welcome you back for another memorable experience soon!

One of the best views around!
When I was in New York last time, I had to go to the Empire State Building. The views were incredible, but this time, we decided to go to Top Of the Rock. Let me tell you, the difference was amazing! The views were absolutely breathtaking. We went at 4:20 pm, just before sunset, and we’re so glad we made that choice. Watching the sunset in New York City is simply unreal, and I highly recommend it to anyone! The only slight downside was the line to get back down to the main level after the sunset. We ended up waiting around 25 minutes.
We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed the incredible views from Top of the Rock! Watching the sunset over New York City is truly a magical experience. We appreciate your feedback about the wait time and will work to improve that aspect. Thank you for sharing your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back soon!

Decent Views and Great for Sunset
We visited The Top of The Rock about an hour before sunset and then took in the views whilst the sun went down. It was pretty busy and difficult to get some space but everyone was polite in taking turns for photos. There wasn’t too much seating but there was a cafe area that sold food and drink. We used the cafe, that was good, and waited until dark for more photos. My son and wife done The Beam and what a waste of money… 90 seconds up turn and down and then try to sell you photos all for $50… bit of a rip. Aside of that though, was pretty good.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Lenny! We're glad you enjoyed the views and found the cafe to your liking. We appreciate your feedback about The Beam and will take it into consideration. Your insights help us improve our offerings. We hope to welcome you and your family back for another visit!

Great tour with a great guide.
We did the Rockefeller Center architecture tour. The key to this tour is to have a great guide, and Jonathan was that guide. It was a wonderful, informative, and educational tour. Jonathan really knew his way around and his sense of humor made the tour exceptional. We really enjoyed it and would take it again.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Jon! We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed the Rockefeller Center architecture tour and that Jonathan made such a positive impact. A great guide can really elevate the experience, and we’re glad you found it both informative and entertaining. We look forward to welcoming you back for another tour!

I visited both the Empire and the top of the World and I must say that the top of the rock is the one I liked the least. There is little queue and a fairly quick climb but compared to the other two there is nothing that tells the tale history of the skyscraper or that holds interest during the queue. The different thing is that the ceiling of the lift is transparent and therefore it is possible to evaluate the speed of ascent. Once at the top you can find a bar and a first terrace and then go up to the second floor. Here there is the new attraction that allows you to take photos on the beam. I was told that the cost is $25 per person and I do not recommend it for those who suffer from vertigo even if in reality everything is done in extreme safety. There is then a staircase that leads to the third floor. The view allows you to admire Central Park and is more central than the other two observatories but the height is lower and if I had to choose I would opt for one of the other two. I was expecting something more engaging taking into account that the building is decidedly particular and has its own history.

I booked this experience some weeks ago. We arrived on Monday morning to be told that the weather was appalling and we couldn’t see anything. Rather than saying that our tickets were non-transferable. We were directed to the ticket office where we were able to change dates very quickly and easily. This included the ticket for the beam.
On the day we arrived at 2 pm as directed and went straight in. No queue whatsoever. Straight through security and in less than five minutes we were write up the top.
The queue for the beam was about 20 minutes which was very reasonable. What they don’t make it clear is the fact that you will have to share the being with other people unless you go VIP. We were told this as we were about to get on the beam.
The ride itself felt very safe, although a little nerve racking and the views were spectacular. The photograph was free, but if you want to buy a print then $10 each.

Another highly recommended observation deck to experience if visiting NYC! We booked through NYC CityPASS tickets which were very simple and straight forward to use and saved us a lot of money when visiting a few of the city's attractions (see separate review) Even though we went in a peak Summer month, we visited in the morning upon opening time so we avoided what I imagine could be very long queues as other reviews have mentioned here. Staff were friendly and attentive during our visit. The views from the 'top' were incredible and you can see all over magnificent Manhattan (stunning Central Park, Empire State Building and miles and miles of skyscrapers) Great photo opportunities!

Quite possibly the most overrated experience in New York and not worth the money paid.

Queuing system upon arrival outside was a shambles - no organisation or any idea where you were supposed to go until you were shouted at by a rude member of staff.

Once you are finally let in you are herded like cattle around a stuffy queue area to get to the lifts - did not get to the top until half an hour after my allocated time and completely missed the sunset.

The views are impressive at the top but good luck getting anywhere near the front as there is no system in place - on the top floor where there is no glass blocking the view there are many selfish people who stand there and hog the best viewing areas.

The experience getting back down is as bad as going up as you are forced to wait in line while others have their picture taken even if you don’t want one.

Staff were rude and miserable and most need customer service training. No information telling you about the history of the building or the buildings you can see from the viewing deck.

An awful experience I would never do this again or recommend to anyone and would actively discourage friends and family from wasting their money on this when they visit New York.

The view from the top of the Rockefeller Centre is spectacular, and I doubt can be beaten. However, the visitor experience is appalling. We arrived shortly before our allocated time, and were told by staff at the door to join the back of a very long queue. After a while, it transpired they were just telling everyone to join this queue no matter when their booked time was, so we had people in front of us that they wouldn’t let in yet, and people behind us who were late for their slot. Eventually a member of staff walked along the line asking for specific time slots, when we gave ours (we were now late) they shrugged and said to go along to the front of the line and ask what time slots are being accepted. So we walked to the front, where there was no longer any staff, losing our place in the queue! By this point we’d been there about 25 minutes and not even entered the building, so we bypassed the queue (sorry to those who think we queue-jumped) and went through the front door, up to the security check who then proceeded to check our tickets and let us in. When finally at the top (there’s only 1 elevator) the chaos continued as far too many people were crammed onto a fairly small roof space, there seemed to be no limit on how many people had bought tickets for a time slot or how long they were allowing people to stay. You pay extra for a ticket around sunset, but what’s the point if others are buying an earlier ticket and then standing at the front of the viewing point for hours on end so you don’t get to see it? So after half an hour of snapping photos of the best NYC skyline that includes the back of someone else’s head, we left. They need to sort it out, it is a shambles.

From its 260 meter height you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city. It is worth spending the 15 dollars supplement to the normal ticket cost, expected for entry from 5pm to 9pm, to experience the magic of the sunset, and then of the darkness, with the lights that illuminate New York. For obvious reasons it is also the busiest time, however the show is guaranteed.

The beam holds up to eight persons. Each person pays to sit on the Beam, which rises so a photograph is taken of the group.

Avoid if you are a family and want a photograph of just your group.

Whilst there are eight seats on Beam, the staff randomly allow some people or families to sit on the Beam on their own (thereby leaving some seats not filled ) so they can have their own photograph.

However, for other individuals or families, the staff insist every seat is filled. If you say you are happy to wait so only your group is photographed on the Beam, they tell you to read the terms and condition, or to contact customer services, or they have right to decide who uses the Beam, or advise you to ‘edit out’ of the photo anyone who is not in your party!

We went at a time when it was quiet and there was no reason why we could not have just our group sit on the Beam for the photograph, particularly as they allowed other individual persons and families to do so at that time. The random application of the rules made it an unnecessarily unfriendly family experience.

The view is undoubtedly magnificent, but it is the only saving grace. EXORBITANT price, BAD service, very long waits, work in progress so the view is NOT 360 degrees, rude and pedantic staff. Exaggerated crowd that doesn't allow you to see well. Give your $ to other establishments.

By far the best observation deck to take in the skyline of NYC. With uninterrupted views of the iconic Empire State and Chrysler buildings, you really know you're in NYC at the Top of the Rock. A visit in the evening was well worth it, watching all the lights come on across the city after watching a beautiful sunset. Good value being available on the New York Pass (a modest surcharge is payable to go at sunset). If you're only going up one observation deck, make it this one - you don't see the Empire State building from the Empire State observation deck!

We visited Top of the Rock yesterday at 5.35pm. We queued to get in, then queues for the lifts. In that time (approx 10 minutes) we already encountered 3 extremely rude staff. The two on the lower floor were exceptionally rude! One shouted at customers who were waiting to enter the lift when the door opened, telling them ‘I tell you when to enter, it’s MY job’. The other who was allowing people to join the queue was then overheard saying how she hates working on the lower floor as people are so dumb. They then played a hand clapping game really fast and both laughed at the end saying how that had got rid of some of their frustrations for working at the stupid place. They then did it again and said they felt better and let us in the lift!

On the 2nd floor our petrified 9 year old daughter had to go on her own through security as it had randomly selected her. I waited as near as I could without being in the way, and a male staff member then shouted at me to move. I explained our daughter was feeling anxious and he shouted at me ‘oh but you heard me 3 times, now move’. By this time my daughter had gone through security and we were able to join the next queue.

**At the top we were lucky to just get there before sunset and the views were beautiful across the city. We spent an hour on the two levels and it was picturesque**

Then it was time to join the queue to come down. It was 6.40pm. Whilst in the queue of about 300 people a member of staff shouted at the line with utter sarcasm about getting side by side, two by two if we ever wanted to get out of the place.

What I am grateful for is a member of staff called Damani. He was an absolute gem! He tried to entertain the queue from the top of the escalator telling us to huddle for warmth and trying to make us laugh. When we got to the queue for the main lift down he returned and was trying to entertain a crying baby. He had a beautiful soul and was the only member of staff who actually seemed to enjoy his job.

Thank you Damani for making the Top of the Rock experience, along with the views, worthwhile.
