Let's be honest, Dakota Building is famous for Rosemaries Baby and John Lennons murder, not much else.
The building looks very grand and stands out right next to Central Park.
Unfortunately, whilst many people were taking photos of "THE" doorway where John Lennon was killed, the doorman was quite abrupt to tourists who got "too close"
Whilst it IS signposted as Private Property, it's quite obviously an attraction (if that's the right word) for tourists all over the world, so a little tolerance wouldn't go amiss.
I did try to engage in conversation with the two doormen, but they were having none of it.
A bit of a spoiled visit, it has to be said.

Visited here to see the spot where John Lennon’s life was so tragically ended. Perhaps surprisingly, there is no plaque or memorial so you will have to use your imagination. Be careful to stay on the public path - the doormen will zealously guard the private property beyond. As far as I know, Yoko Ono still owns the apartment here.

It's a beautiful and expensive apartment building on Central Park West. Famous for the film "Rosemary's Baby" and as John Lennon's residence. The design is striking up close and from afar in the park. Private residences.

Passed by here many times going to my in-laws. When I found out it was the Dakota, I walked past. Had a weird feeling. The doorman was friendly, if not cautious. The doorman are right there when people approach. They will answer questions, but I didn't ask.

I passed by The Dakota in December 2021 during my walk in Central Park. I exited the park at 72nd Street. The Dakota is famous for being the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. It has impressive architecture and is a good photo opportunity.

This icon is just up the block from where I grew up. I worked there one summer as I was earning money to go to school for a semester in Europe. My Dad was superintendant of our building and he used his connections with the Super at the Dakota to get me the job. I was ok as a doorman but disappointing as a summer fill-in at the other positions. Still I did last the summer. The classical edifice was dirty then, but still the place was awesome with it's black steel gargoiles, brickwork, roofs and moats and extremely wealthy tenants. I remember playing down in those moats as a kid until the doormen came out of the brass booth in the front of the building to chase us away. The place has since been steam cleaned and is even more attractive. I could tell you stories about the residents of the Dakota in that summer, but what happens at the Dakota stays at the Dakota. Of course it is sadly now known as the place where John Lennon was tragically assassinated. It's definitely a fine place to stop by on your way to or from Central Park. If you are lucky, you might get the doorman to chat with you, but probably not. You are not allowed to go past the gates inside the courtyard or inside the building, but you can gawk from the outside. If you could get inside you's see ornate hallways and wonderful high-ceilinged apartments.

Just back from my first trip across the Atlantic. Spent a few days in New York. "Nothing to see here, move along please" would be my advice on this one, especially if you are only spending a few days over there.
Whilst we were at the entrance a posh woman got out of a Roller. The doorman-come-guards ran over and treated her like royalty and fished her shopping out of the boot. As she walked past us I wanted to know who she was. I wondered if she was there the night John Lennon was shot. I politely asked her if she could invite us in for a cup of tea and chat. I thought she could let us have a look around. Hey, if Yoko was home she might have even let us knock on the door and say hi. Well you never know and if you don't ask you don't get.
She was polite enough and a bit of a comedian because she replied that she was just out of tea. As she stepped inside I shouted after her "Well I suppose a cup of coffee is out of the question then?"
She didn't reply. Love to know who she was but I can't find a list of current tennants on the net
Well as for the building: Probably one of the most overrated atractions on everyone's "must-see" New York attractions. We mistook which building it was at first as there was an impressive building next door. We asked someone and we were pointed to the correct building. There is nothing special about it and nothing to disqinquish it from the nearby buildings.
We noticed another tourist couple taking pictures at the entrance so we did the same. They then asked us if they were at the place John Lennon was shot. We told them we'd only stopped because they had. I honestly expected more, maybe a little museum and a place you could go in and have a look inside. At least a sign saying "John Lennon was shot here".
A collection box so we could have donated to one of the peace organisations John Lennon supported would have been a nice touch. At any rate it should have been more clear that we were actually there.
Bottom Line - Luckily there was a subway station entrance under the building so it was easy to leave the area after the wasted trip.

Once again, it was just really cool hanging out in Central Park and with the views of the Dakota in the background. The design is beautiful, and the history of John Lennon even more nostalgic.

It really is not just another doorman building in New York City. The Dakota, John Lennon's last residence in New York City's Upper West Side, is one of the most beautiful buildings in town and the entrance where John was killed is really spectacular - big, gorgeous gas lamps on the building, uniformed Doormen/Security, beautiful limestone exterior, etc. Beatles and Lennon fans will greatly appreciate the building.
There's little chance of getting beyond the sidewalk, or into/onto the building's property. However, it's enough to see and experience where so much good came to an early and unfair end.
TIP - Subway Line 1,2,3 to 72nd Street (one beyond Lincoln Center).
TIP - Central Park's memorial "Strawberry Fields" is directly across Central Park West at 72nd Street, so an obvious sight to combine with the Dakota.
TIP - Eat at the Dakota Restaurant between the Subway and the Dakota Building to get amped up and in the mood.

O Dakota é um prédio meramente residencial, não funciona como hotel; a reserva para espetáculos da Broadway poderá ser feito com concierge do hotel em que ficar hospedada.
