Neighbourhood: Chinatown
Bursting with an amazing array of sights, sounds, and smells on every block, a visit to Chinatown feels like entering a different world. It’s a colorful spectacle that gets even more crowded on weekends, when families stream in to enjoy huge dim sum feasts and to stock up at the markets on Mott Street. To take a break from the buzz, grab something sweet from one of the many bakeries in the area and head to Columbus Park, where many Chinatown residents exercise, play games, and chat the day away.

- Laura H1 contributionA beautiful piece of historyI'm from New York but don't live here anymore. I was in the neighborhood for some errands and wanted to do something touristy. This fit the bill perfectly. When I was greeted by a wonderful security guard and front desk man. Admission was a worthwhile $15 and masks are required to be worn while in the museum. They asked if I wanted a docent tour (which was included in the price) and mentioned it would be one on one. When I said yes I got to meet the kindest docent who I had the honor of spending an hour with. The docent took me around and had so much knowledge. I enjoyed getting to learn about the synagogue and the process of restoration. The tour starts by explaining the "why" of Jews being in the neighborhood and continues to how there was funding for the synagogue and explaining how the synagogue functioned both day to day and on special days. He had great stories that I found entertaining too. I think the tour and history makes this worth going to, however the space is also absolutely breathtaking. It is stunning just to look around. I'm so glad I finally made it here and am sure I will end up coming with others on a future visit!Visited March 2023Written 3 March 2023
- LeslieSWUkiah, California3 contributionsFabulous experience....My husband and I had read about the history of the Eldridge Street Synagogue and Museum and stopped by to take a look. WOW!!!!! The synagogue was breathtaking and the one-hour (FREE) tour was exceptional. Susan was our tour guide. She was articulate and enthusiastic in her presentation and thoughtful and respectful as she explained the meaning of the various artifacts and materials in the museum. We came away enlightened and grateful for this lesser-known tourist destination. Very few people and a personalized educational tour that was top-notch. Highly recommend.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2023

Our tour guide Susan was remarkable in her knowledge and openness to questions and remarks from all ages in our large tour group. I plan to take advantage of the synagogue's other cultural events as well.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 May 2023
- citygirl00110024New York City, New York99 contributionsDo Not Overlook this Beautifully Restored Jewish Synagogue - take advantage of the Docent Tours (no additional charge)The Museum at Eldridge Street is a little known gem on the edge of the Lower East Side near China Town and close to the base of the Manhattan Bridge. Docent led tours are available at no additional charge with admission at 11am and 2pm. I cannot recommend more to take advantage of the docent led tours - especially if they are all as knowledgeable as our Docent, Lois. She had an incredible amount of knowledge on Jewish history in the neighborhood and the church along with the effort to preserve this historic building to allow us to enjoy it today. She kindly answered all of our questions about Judaism (as a Southern transplant to NYC with almost no knowledge) as well as sharing relevant personal anecdotes that I think always makes a tour more enjoyable and interesting. She was so cute when she had us wait in the stairwell for a moment while she closed the door to the sanctuary to allow her to provide a "big reveal" with the sanctuary beautifully lit with original lighting fixtures and beautiful stained glass. If you have had a long day of site seeing, there are many opportunities to sit and listen to the tour to allow your weary feet to rest a bit. I have lived in NYC for 22 years and am embarrassed to say I have never heard of this museum. We found it on the NYC Culture Pass through the NYPL and decided to check it out. I am so glad that had an opportunity to see this beautifully restored building and learn more about the Jewish Culture.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 July 2023

Susan our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the Jewish culture of NY. This was a real history lesson and a true cultural experience. The beauty of the synagogue was truly stunning. To see how it was left to deteriorate to be brought to its original splendor is amazing. I highly recommend a visit and tour.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 September 2023
- Oliver S3 contributionsA Must-Visit for Every New YorkerBeautiful building, beautiful afternoon. The guide was informative but the whole experience was low-key. After we sat in the sanctuary and chatted, and the staff were happy to let us linger. It's less a museum than an aesthetic and historical experience.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 November 2023
- JLaP15 contributionsExcellent LES walking tourEldridge Eats Food Tour- a history of the Lower East Side- was excellent. The guide was terrific, knows the area and its history inside and out, and presented the info in an engaging and easy to follow way. A knish, dumplings, ruggelah and pickle opportunity from LES favorites enhanced the experience. I’ve been raving about this ever since. I even went back to the area the next day on my own to revisit some of the stops.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 November 2023

The Synagogue is just wonderful, and our guide, Susan Slater, perfect sharing with us a lot of stories about the construction and the 20 years of the reconstruction of the building and the Jewish community in NY. We will come back.

Most interesting history. To think the synagogue was built in 9 months and then it took 20 years to undo the decay and neglect that had been allowed to fester. Beautiful building; beautiful history.

Hi, how much of the walking tour offered here duplicates with the walking tour given by the tenement museum? Trying to decide which one to go to. My husband is Jewish and his family immigrated through Ellis Island so we definitely want to do one of these tours but don't know if 2 is too much of the same thing.
How long to allot for a visit

The guided tour took 45 minutes to an hour. Give it an hour to 1 1/2 hours at the most should do it.

This is a stop you have to make. Go back in time to 1900 and see how the emigrants who came to this country lived and worked. There are many different 1 hour tours and each one is more interesting then the next. A must see when in NYC.
