About
Park located in the East Village that was the scene of a big uprising in 1991 when a decision was made to evict the park's homeless in order to renovate; today, the park is pretty and quiet, but is still home to many who have no where else to go.

For the tourist Tomplins Square park is a welcome break from the city and I recommend taking time to do a workout in the facilities just behind the basket court. There are many good pull-up bars, a dip bar, monkey latter etc. Many local come for a work out and many are freindly so you can have a chat while training. The park is also a nice place to bring some brakfast to enjoy while watching people. Toilet facilities are there but not too clean or nice - only thing which I would hope get improved.

Took a stroll through this park and there isn’t anything particularly pretty or interesting. People watching is entertaining and we certainly have a good laugh about the strange people we encountered here. Probably the only place in NYC that I felt uneasy. I definitely wouldn’t go here after dark.

I made a quick visit when I’m the area purely due to the Mumford and Sons song so didn’t stay long. It seemed pleasant enough during the daytime for a short walk.

Decent park that has been cleaned up over the years and makes for a better place to go for a stroll. It is located in the heart of the lower east side and is an ideal place to sit down and take a breather during the afternoon.

Parks are one of the best places to see real New Yorkers and get a taste for each section of Manhatten. Washington Square park is more famous and Bryant with more events, Tompkins is not to be missed.
This trip I saw African drum lessons, a photo shoot, Cubans playing dominos and skateboards doing tricks. And the assortment of locals resting, eating, and stoned. From this spot you are just a few blocks west to Washington Sq. and South to Delancy street for great food and some hip streets. It's a 20 hike to Chinatown or a 5min cab

More groomed than in previous years, but still a slight tinge of the edginess that used to be the East Village. Shared by old time residents and new NYU students, this park gives you a cross section of the neighborhood as it has always existed. Recently a film re-enacting the riots of the 80's was shot here. Most weekends, some edgy bands play and most days you can find the neighborhood musicians, bird feeders and performers hanging out somewhere in the park. Sundays have a small but plentiful farmers market along the south eastern edge.

While Lonely Planet has a paragraph dedicated to this small urban park, Tompkins Square Park is just a normal one with lawn, fountain and basketball court. Locals may find it useful and convenient but tourists can simply skip this place.

Never heard of it but some guy in a band called Mumford wrote a song about it so it meant I had to go there.
It’s a generic looking US urban park in a fairy pleasant area near the Washington Arch. Probably worth visiting just to enjoy the walk.
Apparently there’s a bar you can only access via a public pay phone nearby so couple it with getting hammered in a bootleg boozer and you can make a day of it.
