I went there to look for heavy metal band t-shirts. It was a gem and it was beyond a few shirt stores. From tattoo to tobacco and many other accessories and counter-cultural lifestyle, one can still find items to have.

Lots of tattoo parlors and quirky shops.
Fun to walk down and check out some of the bizarre boutiques.

I know, all of NYC has changed. I graduated from NYU 17 years ago... I got my first tattoo on St. Marks 20 years ago... I went to Trash & Vaudeville like church on Sunday. These are the things you do on St. Marks, the punk center of Manhattan like Camden is to London.
Yoga on St. Marks? A fresh tea & juice bar on St. Marks? Oh the disappointment and sadness for the death of punk!
But, the Andromeda tattoo place is still there and a few other remnants. The kid smoking a joint on a stoop topped off my nostalgic smile.

Full of local character and history. Visited as my husband wanted to see where the rolling stones video was shot. Still looks pretty much how it was then.

Cool streets to stroll along, coffee shops, cafe, restaurants and funny little shops. Nice and easy to look around. Lots of cool buildings and wall art.

St. Marks is one of the funkiest neighborhoods in NYC. A short walk from Greenwich Village or take the subway to Astor Place. Great local pubs and restaurants and funky shops. Lots of locals - not at all touristy like Times Square. Get off the beaten path and check out his East Village neighborhood!

So much history, art and culture to experience in this area. We found out a lot about the area and St Marks Place from the Lower East Side History Project walks that they do in the area - very educational. The history of the area in the Kleindeutschland period is fascinating, then leading through so many changes through the Beatnik poets, the hippies, the Punks - so much creativity in this small area throughout history and popular culture. There is also some significant buildings in the area - Cooper Union for example. The area is still slightly gritty but nothing compared to what it used to be - very much being corporatized but you can still sense a little bit of the old character of the area.

I only saw one chain (Chipoltle) amongst all of the local stores, eateries and attractions. There is still a hint of the rebel atmosphere that you think of with the East Village, but alas, you can see that this place too is becoming a high-rent neighborhood that will soon have Starbucks on every corner. But for now, it is still unique, quirky and very much worth strolling through.

Slds!

Hello,
I made a reservation for 8 night (21rst- 29th april).
I read here (in an other question) that they are building a new hotel a door or tow west of Homewood Suites. Do you think the construction will be finished before April ? I'm afraid of noise !
