The circular Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building is as much of a draw as the museum's collection of modern art.

Neighbourhood: Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.

    Amazing
Personally I consider it an example of valuable architecture and it is one of my favorite buildings in New York. I will not go into the merits of the exhibitions that can be found inside but only from an architectural point of view. Entrance to admire it on the ground floor is free and you are allowed to walk around the large atrium and see the internal structure. You can stop on the sofas and watch the play of light that is created based on the external light. To exit it is mandatory to pass through the shop divided into a part dedicated to the museum and one to ours, with decidedly original and interesting objects. The people who came with me, although ignorant from an architectural point of view, were unable to admire the particularity of the building, seeing substantial differences between the outside and the inside where smooth and monochromatic walls enclose a warm and fully usable environment.

    Concept, message, meaning and exclusion
The idea is born as a concept, options are considered, the perfect meaning is sought and it is reflected in a work that only the artist and his friends appreciate. Select art, art for sensitive people, art that excludes me. Art that I don't like. And also the museum bathrooms are very dirty.

    Spectacular Going Dark exhibition
The current Going Dark exhibition is a fascinating take by dozens of artists on the idea of personal visibility (and invisibility) without our culture. Wonderful work by well-known artists like Carrie Ann Weems, Kerry James Marshall, Henry Willis Thomas, Glenn Ligon, Faith Ringgold and many other artists who may be revelations to you. And, of course, the permanent Thannhauser Collection is worth a visit itself for anyone interested in art of the early modernists.

    Not For Me
I visited the Guggenheim today. I started on floor six and worked my way down. The most positive thing I can say is that it was definitely not my cup of tea. I thought most of the displayed “pieces of art” were depressing…which I guess was the point. Getting a cab outside the museum was quite easy.

    Building worth it!!
This is a museum that you definitely have to visit in NY. Beyond the art they display, the building itself is quite a spectacle and experience. As an architect, this building was my dream to see and my favorite of many! Its shape, color, internal and external movement, everything is worth it! He recommends making the visit and then sitting outside to eat a typical hot dog from the city, Nathan's, very delicious!!!

    Beautiful building
Magnificent building, whether from the exterior or the interior rotunda. On the other hand, the temporary exhibition is really for very contemporary art enthusiasts, and there are relatively few works on display. I preferred the one in Bilbao. The exhibition halls are good but

My family had a race to reach the top of the spiral of exhibits at the Guggenheim
My wife and I visited the Guggenheim with our daughter, son-in-law, and three grandsons during a visit to NYC this past summer. We didn’t get to thoroughly enjoy the exhibits because our group hurriedly went up the spiral outside exhibits not giving us sufficient time to absorb the different artwork. But still there were some pieces that I really enjoyed.

Iconic building, but artwork collection modest
Guggenheim has a great atmosphere, but despite the landmark building with plenty of space, the artwork collection on display is relatively modest. Some of the artworks are fantastic, e.g. one could stare at Kandinsky’s Blue Mountain for an hour, but the layout and space beg for more (and the Blue Mountain begs for a bench in front of it). My recommendation would be to visit The Met and MoMA first. If you choose to visit Guggenheim, do check out the museum shop though.

    Iconic Building, Sparse Art Displays
Of all the museums we visited in NYC, unfortunately this was the most disappointing. Sure the Frank Lloyd Wright design is iconic but the artwork inside was rather sparse and a lot of it just didn't interest us. We thought it would be best to take an elevator up to the top and then walk down the spiral. While that was a good idea, we missed the description of the artist and exhibit since it was down on the lower level. There is a nice room with a lot of recognizable artists (I think it was called the Tannhauser collection) but other than that, we were done a lot quicker than I thought we'd be. We got a little discount by using a CityPass package, and I'm glad we visited but I don't think we'll be back.

    Rotating Artist Exhibitions
The Guggenheim is unique in that the museum features new artists all the time as the main exhibition, so you can come back year after year and see totally different works of art. However if you're picky with modern art, it is worth looking up the featured artist in advance as the majority of the museum will be dedicated as their show space. This heavily impacts your experience with the museum itself. However, there are smaller side galleries, one of which heavily features small paintings of Picasso, Rosseau, Monet, etc from the Guggenheim's permanent collection. The structure of the museum lends itself easily to a nice, gentle, linear walk through all the galleries. While the the price of admission is a bit steep, it can be well worth it if you're curious about the featured artist.

There are some great works of art here, not the least of which is the Frank Lloyd Wright building. But the building is undergoing a lot of renovation. You can't walk the spiral stairs. They do disclose this before you go in and the price is discounted from $25 to $16.

But the collection is relatively small. Perhaps it's unfair to compare it to the Metropolitan Museum, but if you are visiting and have limited time, there's no questions the Met offers a great deal more, and that's a major understatement.

I grew up in NYC and this is my first time inside. My wife really wanted to go. I was a little surprised by the $25/per person fee as you can visit the Museum of Modern art by donation but it was explained to me that it is a private museum and so...
The interior is beautiful and the displays interesting but I will be honest and say nothing was that interesting except maybe for the standing collection of Picasso's etc...and that was limited. As you ascend the spiral the works became less and less interesting and really stretch you ability to say what is Art and not. Overall I was not impressed but it is a one time tourist destination and we did that.

After putting off visiting for years (for no good reason) I’m delighted to have finally toured this world famous museum. From the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright design to the interesting and unique exhibits this should be on the itinerary for every trip to NY. They also have excellent reciprocal admission with memberships from several other art museums across the US.

What a disappointment. Currently half the building is shut including the spiral staircase. Only 3 floors are open and there is very little art work on show. It takes very little time to see round and despite a reduction in ticket price , it still is not worth the money. The best bit by far is the Frank Lloyd Wright designed building but we wasted a fair amount of money taking a taxi to it. Wait until it reopens

While the museum was in the middle of a rehang, the staff were very quick to explain what was, and wasn’t on show, with a reduced admission price. Lovely little exhibits of 1960s minimalism and color field paintings as well as the Thannhauser collection. Shop overpriced.

I went on the "name your price" day and time since I was not really interested in this kind of art but more on the building.
This Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is something you must visit while in New York.
I was very disappointed by the fact that the exhibition starts from the bottom of the spiral even if the architect's concept for the building is to take the lift and visit it from the top to the bottom. I just did the exhibition reverse since I was more interested in the building.

We went for the architecture, and that did not disappoint. I have the LEGO version at home and it was great to experience the atrium IRL. However, there was very little art, as the entire building was dedicated to a special exhibit “Countryside, The Future” — unlike some other reviews here, I found it less heavy-handed on the climate change front than I expected after we arrived (though that was there, as it should be) and I learned some interesting things along the way. But it wasn’t what I expected and definitely not for everybody - especially if you were geared up to look at some art! Two rooms from their permanent collection were all they had on display. Although I enjoyed it to some degree, I would not recommend it above the other museums I have visited in NYC.

From what I had learned about this museum in the past was that they used to have thousands of art pieces all along the walls of the spiral ramp. That is all gone. One floor had a very small collection of French Impressionistic paintings, another floor had a temporary exhibit of photographic nudes, another floor had a display of nooses and ugly Jackson Pollock paintings, and finally another floor had a room full of pandemic-era artwork by local elementary school students! I paid $25 to look at artwork by kids when they were stuck at home??? Really? This is what the Guggenheim is offering patrons? If I wanted to look at artwork by 3rd graders, I could have just stayed home and looked at the walls of my own kids’ rooms! Now, let’s compare the art of elementary school kids to Jackson Pollock, who, in his madness, just sloshed cans of paint on to canvas laid on his garage floor. I’m no fan, obviously. But, really Guggenheim, maybe you should charge everyone a donation fee because $25 is excessive to look at artwork by local 2nd and 3rd graders.

At the start of our five week return to NYC we decided to tackle the Guggenheim first. It has changed in presentation since last visit fifteen years ago. I believe for the better. On entry there was no queue for us so able to get access immediately and started at the top floor to descend slowly looking at the display. The arrangement is that there was a temporary expo of paintings and sculptures selected by established artists, not of their work but that which has inspired them or that they like. Some examples well known, other for us not known at all. A great opportunity for us to see.
We found it very stimulating and it should be a good example for other galleries to follow to expose where sources have commenced or been influenced. Well worth seeing but I think finished already. The permanent collection remains available too, in the extension. An enjoyable visit at the start of our trip.

I like modern art museums, and I saw some fantastic Chagalls and Kandinskys, which are some of my favorites when I go to art museums. But there was significant renovation going on, and there were only 3 rooms open in the whole museum. What I saw was decent, but not amazing, and it probably would have been cooler if it wasn't under renovation...though to be honest, I'm a bit skeptical about just how much.

Honestly, the most exciting part of my visit was realizing it was the building Will Smith ran up to catch the alien in the beginning of Men in Black.
