Drinks & conversation

Relaxing area to just sit on the rooftop and have a drink. We met friends and just enjoyed the light of the downtown area.

Terrific Food and Service
May 2016 • Couples
While visiting San Diego my wife and I found a gem of a bar and restaurant in the J Six, located at 616 J Street in the Gaslamp Quarter. The decor is contemporary, the food is organic and local produce. The food is delicious. We had roasted Maine scallops with chorizo, corn, onions, basil, cilantro, and fingerling potatoes. My wife uncharacteristically had a burger and fries, but raved about the quality and taste. She also had a peach salad as a starter and I had the pita with lemon humus, yum! The wait staff was attentive and pleasant. The total bill for two with tip was $107.00. During our next trip to San Diego I will definitely seek out this gem of a restaurant.

Hidden Gem for Locals and Tourists alike
Jul 2015 • Friends
I have been frequenting this bar for years. It is one of the few rooftop bars that manages to maintain a great lounge environment without the typical Gaslamp chaos. No DJ's, loud music, or the typical trappings of rooftop bars downtown. Truly a welcome escape from the chaos of clubs like Hard Rock, Omnia, or Fluxx. Great spot to grab a drink before a big night out OR if you simply want something a bit more low key. It is only accessible via an elevator on 6th St. or through Hotel Solimar so it weeds out those wandering around aimlessly. Great bartenders and staff in general!

Rooftop terrace in San Diego
Oct 2014 • Friends
Visited on a Wednesday evening & stayed for a couple of cocktails with a group of colleagues. The bar was relatively quiet while we were there & I personally found the service to be friendly & enjoyed being on a rooftop terrace in the city. I would visit again.

Stay away!!
This should be a great place to go in downtown San Diego! Jbar is in a killer location and has a great outside vibe for those who want to enjoy the summer time weather! However, the service at this place is horrible and keeps getting worse! I have be going to Jbar off and on since it opened and I keep giving the place the benefit of the doubt, but I've decided that it isn't worth the time or effort! Jbar's staff is extremely cocky and rude! They act as if they are to good to be serving you! Isn't it their job! Some of the waitresses are cute but stay away from the bar! Everytime I go in there it looks as if there is a new manager but none of them have done anything to improve the service, food or prices! The prices are more then Stingaree (an L.A type place across the street) and they don't have anything that makes up for the price. Stay away!!! Luckly I've heard the there is a new hotel "The Ivy" opening up down the street that will be offering the same vibe and outdoor scene and is promising great service!

Great food, but low rent college crowd
Jbar is the rooftop bar at the Solamar Hotel in San Diego. We've visited several times, and each time the good and bad points have remained consistent, so I feel confident giving you this review.

The bar area sits next to a cabana/pool area that is obviously a poor knockoff of the W Hotels chain. The Jbar pool area is too small and the cabanas are crammed close to each other. The decor is sterile and feels incomplete, as if the architect never finished the job. It actually looks way better at night, when colored lights are used to good effect and give the rooftop bar a cool atmosphere. To get a feel for how things should have been done instead, go experience the pool/cabana area at the W Hotel in Westwood (Los Angeles).

On the plus side, Jbar's food is surprisingly tasty and refined. Not only is it far better than the fare served at other hotels, it even bests many of the standalone restaurants in downtown San Diego. The chef and his crew do an amazing job and are to be complimented.

You'd think that the upscale food would attract a classy crowd. But no. The crowd is a huge, huge disappointment; it's a low rent college scene. Be prepared for shirtless frat boys in flip flops, tattoos, and cargo shorts. Pudgy girls in short, cheap denim skirts. The net effect is Spring Break on a budget, not what you'd expect from an upscale hotel. And whenever the Jbar management hires a DJ, do yourself a favor and run away. You can expect loud volume and a really poor music selection whenever a hotel desperately tries to compete with nightclubs ... in the daytime!!

In conclusion, Jbar has yet to live up to its great potential. If management would only enforce a dress code and attract a chic crowd, Jbar could be the best spot in San Diego.
