Top ways to experience Bunker Hill Monument
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Charlestown
Charlestown’s hilly roads, narrow streets and gaslight lamps, make it an enticing neighborhood to visit. Follow the Freedom Trail over the Washington St bridge from the North End or take the scenic water locks to Paul Revere Park. Walk through City Square and stroll down cute Main street, wandering up the windy residential streets to Monument Square, where you can learn about the city’s history along with a great view of Boston at the Bunker Hill Monument. While it’s not a huge area, there are some excellent restaurants. Find your way to the Charlestown Navy Yard, which is a developing area with lots of condos and an additional site for Massachusetts General Hospital research centers. Here you will also find the USS Constitution Museum. After you’re done, hop on an MBTA ferry at the dock on Baxter street and zip on over to Long Wharf and the New England Aquarium.

    Battle Monument
This is a large Obelisk that commemorates the Battle of Bunker (Breeds) Hill. The last stop on the Freedom Trail it is a bit of a hike up the hill. When I was there you could only go up in the obelisk on weekends, I was there on a Friday. You can go inside to see the Statue of Joseph Warren. Don't forget to visit the museum across the street when you visit.

    Nice climb, mediocre view
That is a lot of steps to go up. View from the top is mediocre, thanks to very small windows with smudgy glass in front. Service is friendly and keeps track of the number of people going up and down. Don't climb if you don't like small spaces

Bragging rights for climbing up 294 steps
It was interesting to read the history of the monument, but my daughter and I challenged to walk the 294 steps inside the spiraling steps to the top. Every 25 steps were marked so you would know your progress. There were a few narrow vertical windows which brought in light and air. They were open, but screened. We made the 294 steps, but had a tough time with the steps across the street at the museum because we were sore! We now have bragging rights!

Do the Museum - Avoid the Climb
If you want to learn more about the beginnings of the American Revolution, this is a good stop. We walked there from the USS Constitution. The museum has an interesting diorama which lights up while various parts of the Battle of Bunker Hill. The rangers in the museum were very knowledgeable and jumped at the chance to talk about the battle. There are stair, 294 of them, to the top of the monument, but I'd only suggest that if you really wanted to see a nice view of the harbor - it was quite the climb inside a small space.

    Worth the walk
Being British-born, my knowledge of the Revolutionary War in America is poor, so in following the Freedom Trial (on my own) and reaching the monument, the story of the battle was new to me. I wasn’t aware that you could walk up the inside until a helpful member of staff enquired if I wanted to…it’s free and 294 steps to the top ! View not great, but good exercise and a sense of achievement at the end !

Make the stop and climb to the top
While touring Boston, my family spent one day in “Charlestown” and the North End. We walked up to Bunker Hill Museum & Monument. The museum was a bit underwhelming, but the climb to the top of the monument is highly recommended. View is awesome! It took 2 parents and their tweens 10 minutes total to go up and down the 294 steps. (Note: there are restrooms and a water bottle filler in the downstairs of the museum, should you need one.)

    Interesting historic sight
It is a short walk from the USS Constitution. We got there and it was too late to climb the monument. The museum was closed as well. What I found disappointing was that there was minimal signage for the museum – it is easy to miss. That said, there isn’t much else to see and appreciate, aside from the monument itself. There were a few posters surrounding it - that gave some information about the battle. The info was enough to get a basic understanding, but that’s all. In other words, if you’re going to go, go when everything is open.

A worthy monument to honor the patriots who fought and died there.
I brought my son here to learn some of the revolutionary war history of our country on a trip to Boston. The hill is well kept as befits a monument to those brave patriots who for our nation's freedom. Even though the battle was a defeat it was a very significant engagement and showed the British that we were serious. We got there before monument itself opened and walked all around and took advantage of the informational plaques. There was some construction going on, performing maintenance on the stairs around the hill. (Good to see the upkeep in progress.) When it opened we spent some time in small building before climbing the 294 steps to the top of the obelisk. It was well worth the climb. It was interesting to at the base the a model of the original monument before the current one built in 1843. Go see the museum across the street as well.

Full of scaffolding on our visit but it's located in a nice area and lovely walk. It was Halloween week at the time so was great to see all the decorations on the houses.

The Monument itself is very cool and there is plenty of interesting info inside on the ground level. The 294 stairs to the top was awful. Right now they have scaffolding and mesh so the view is not clear. I am an avid walker and exerciser and after three days of walking around Boston, the 294 steep steps put me over the edge. I could hardly walk for the next week. I feel like it ruined a good portion of my vacation. The view is nothing spectacular, just Boston. I would not recommend climbing to the top.

From a distance, it looks like the Washington Monument. When we were there the area was open but undergoing construction. Visitors were still allowed to hike all of the 294 steps to the top. There was no elevator working. From the top you can see great views of the surrounding Charlestown and Boston area. Or you could do like me and see it from the display below that has real time cameras set up in each of the four directions.
It is reported that this was the first time when the British and New England forces went into battle. Some 1,000 soldiers and marines were killed or wounded. This is a good place to learn some things about the revolution.

Steep climb, free entry, no spectacular view due to small windows, but visit the museum nearby also. I would certainly do it when you're intrested in history, because it was an important point in the war.

Unfortunately the tower is under construction. You can still go up but you can’t look out, so not worth it. The park area is beautiful. There’s also a museum across from the park

The views from the top of the monument were great, but the statue was under construction during my visit, which slightly ruined the images.

Another stop along the Freedom Trail that is further away than most of the others. This reminds me of the Washington Monument in DC, but it looks really neat up close and lots of great space around it to relax in the grass.

The hill offers a fine view of Boston and the NPS office/museum across the street has interesting exhibits and clean restrooms. It is a welcome oasis at the end or beginning of the Freedom Trail, depending on which direction you are walking.

Bunker Hill Monument is part of the Freedom Trail. The view of the city is really stunning from the top of the hill, have a seat, relax after walking up the hill and enjoy the view, its fab.
