Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

About
What could be better than live music held outdoors in the crisp, early, October air of Golden Gate Park, featuring 100 acts across seven stages? Well, thanks to the endowment of venture capitalist (and Bluegrass-lover) Warren Hellman, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is free admission, accepts no corporate sponsors and keeps the focus strictly on the music. With acts from a variety of genres, including country, rock, folk and – as the name implies – bluegrass, this feel-good festival is a hit for a good reason, with many festival goers returning year after year, for all three days.

Bluegrass in the city

Great experience. Many stages to check out and I cook one that was favorable to me. Extra security made the event safe but it also created bottle necks that were serious and scary. Well worth going.

Absolutely Amazing

Besides the fact that it’s free, this music event is truly wonderful! Several stages, an amazing venue and highly enjoyable atmosphere. I understand this year had much more intense security however it did not intrude on the good times. One very important recommendation- do not come by auto, taxi, Lyft or Uber. Avoid the traffic jams; take public transportation then walk or ride a bicycle.

take down the fences and let me walk through the crowd to my friends’ blanket without feeling like a criminal and this would be a great event.

SHIBBY! HaRdLy StRiCtLy BlUeGraSs. Yes PLEASE. FOR LOCALS AND EXTRA-LOCALS
May 2019
I have never been more excited to talk about something other than HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS in SAN FRANCISCO. This is a hipster bluegrass festival with indie rock, alt-country, and old-fashioned popular acts. I have been visiting every year for like 10 years now. I love this festival. It's FREE. It's right down the street from my place of residence. It was started by Warren Hellman, a deceased financier out of the Bay Area. He really enjoyed bluegrass and wanted to service the public. He has left money to continue the festival. I have seen everything I have wanted to see live at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. It's better than Outside Lands because of the styling and brand of the festival. Outside Lands costs too much and it doesn't have the same FLAVOR. HSB is local flavor and worth coming into town to check out. It's not a huge investment. It's a beautiful event. I have seen Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene, Bonnie Prince Billy, Indigo Girls, just anything and everything I have wanted to enjoy in live music. The festival is not replaceable and it's here at GOLDEN GATE PARK in San Francisco! YES DO THIS!

Hardly just a music festival.

Maybe you are looking for the known names at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, but go and you will find musicians you never knew that may entertain you even more. And see how thousands of people can respectfully behave knowing a free music festival at this level cannot be taken for granted.

Modern day Woodstock in a beautiful park
Oct 2018
This festival was amazing. It was well-organized, there were several different stages, there was a great variety of music (NOT just bluegrass), and there were several food trucks and water located throughout the venue. People were relaxed and having a wonderful time. We never felt too crowded and always found a good location for our chairs.

You can’t beat the price

We were in town for the weekend and decided to check it out. We saw Cheap Trick and Emmylou Harris. Can’t get more diverse than that.

Be prepared, it is San Francisco and a concert. I saw more marijuana smoked by old people than any time in my life.

I have been going to this for years. But it was just too crazy busy this year & too much drinking. I got here about 12:30 & people were drunk already. They talk all the time & you can't hear or see the performers. People now stake out huge areas with blankets & you cannot get around. I am too old to deal with this I guess.

Great Festival, beautiful backdrop

It doesn't get much better than seeing some amazing bands for free in a beautiful setting. Hardly Strictly accomplished just that. Set at Golden Gate park, there's plenty of space and lots of stages to see some great bands.

Quick tip: Don't drive into the park. Take a bicycle and save yourself the hassles of traffic. There are large areas inside the festival to secure your bike!
