For the Dapper Gentleman
Sep 2018 • Friends
This was my first visit. I was looking for a hat ...and wow..they did not disappoint! The shop is full of accessories that add just the right touch of class to any gentleman’s wardrobe.

It’s a great place to visit not only for the array of items they have but to get a feel for what 1939 San Francisco May have been like. It is a blast from past...and it was nice stepping into something a little different and very special.

Would encourage tourists and locals to stop by. Great place to get that very special gift from San Fran.

Shadow of its former self
Dec 2015 • Solo
For many years this was the best traditional men's wear store in the West. In fact I have been a customer there for over 50 years. On returning to San Francisco after a long absence I wanted to return to my favorite store to buy a sport coat.
The new location is tiny, the inventotory is sparse and selection of sizes limited.
My attempt to buy a new sport coat was frustrated because they no longer carry my size. The brand I used to buy there still makes my size but Cable Car chooses not to carry it any more.
Their reason is that "nobody buys suits any more". Well I still see lots of men in this city walking around in suits so some other retailers must be supplying them.
From the premier suit store in the West to a small boutique with limited selection, too bad.

A superb old-stle English gentlemaen's outfitters
Aug 2015 • Solo
This fine establishment would be quite at home in Jermyn Street, London. It's a well-stocked and very stylish gentlemen's general outfitters, offering the best in hats, shirts, jackets, accessories, and all sorts of other chappish stuff for the man-about-town. Most of the well-known upmarket British brands are to be seen - I was particularly impressed to see Holland & Holland check shirts. There's even annin-house old-fashioned barber shop. To enhance the overall effect, the walls are adorned with portraits of the Queen, Churchill, etc.

A place that's not just a store
I saw this place on this site and then went to its web site. Very rarely does a place live up to the vibe that it conveys, just by simply being. The only recommendation I suggestion is to go there if not to buy a suit or wardrobe at least some sort of item in support of this institution.

Smells Like Men
Sep 2013 • Business
I have been to this shop many times and have nothing but great things to say about Jon and Nicky. But I was pleasantly taken aback by one of my female assistants as we walked out of the place as she proclaimed: "I love that shop. It looks, feels and smells like men". Well I had never really given it much thought as a galvanized snub nosed member of this gender but as I pondered her comments I can only conclude nothing more than "she's right". This shop is truly all about men and rightly so. From the Bay Run Aftershave to the finely fitted coats this shop is certainly "all about men". In the heart of the Union Square Area where Neman's, Banana Republic (ack*) and in the heart of the metro sexual shopping mecca, Cable Car Clothier has more to offer Men than most of those combined. Take a Saturday afternoon and hang out on the street. Watch who is coming and going. You will see celebrities such as Bruce Willis, CEO's like Charles Schwab and many more walking through the door to engage in style improvements.
I must also confess one of the driving factors in the store is Nicky the Barber. Nicky is by far one of the best "Period Barbers" in California...maybe the nation. He lives the 20s & 30s daily with his dress, his gift to recount famous mobsters and his ever quest for period collectables. He is a unusual jewel and is always happy to inform there is a coat, a shirt, hat or an ascot on one of the shelves in the store that would finish your ensemble with glowing prominence. I cannot say I have always purchased his suggestions but have always found them sincere and illuminating to the appearance I am sporting as I remove myself from the period chair. It is an enjoyable experience getting a cut, a shave, a shine and adding to the investment quality wardrobe.
