Neighbourhood: Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.

A must for rum lovers!
Mar 2020
We LOVED Smuggler's Cove! What a delightful treat. I read Martin Cate's (owner) book before we visited, and the bar truly lives up to the hype. My husband is a rum aficionado, and he was in heaven. Everyone on the staff is an expert and passionate about his or her craft. The tiki decor is so cute and really sets the mood. A true hidden gem in the heart of San Francisco!

Tiki Icon
Feb 2020
Smuggler's Cove is a tiki icon. Their rum cocktails are simply amazing and the space is very cool. The dual bars and three levels of seating make great use of a small footprint. If you love tiki, Smuggler's Cove is a must-visit.

Great experience!
Oct 2019
This place is more or less a speakeasy so keep your eyes open when looking for it as there isn't a big marquee sign. As soon as we walked in I knew I was in my kind of bar. The barkeeps are top notch professionals. My wife, not typically a rum drinker expressed this to the bar keep and provided some attributes she enjoys in a cocktail and let him go to work. He crafted a unique drink based on what she had told him. Likewise, I discovered many new ways to enjoy rum...and my new favorite alcohol, amaro. I purchased their bar book and plan on working my way through it.

Yes, they do have a good rum selection. But for me the place seemed smoky, and the drinks arent cheap.

Also the service staff wasnt the greatest!

Surprising Fun
Dec 2018 • Couples
My GF and I were in SF and thought of going to The Fairmont's Tonga Room for drinks until I did some research and found The Smuggler's Cove. Glad I did. The bar opens at 5pm and there is usually a line out front to get in. Fortunately we arrived 10 minutes early and still had about 10 people ahead of us. Once inside there is a SMALL bar upstairs. There is stairway down into the basement where you will find The Smuggler's Cove. A quaint pirate like galley and bar. Its small downstairs with limited seating so arrive early. We were able to shag 2 nice seats near the bar. There is NO waitress so you go up to the bar and order. They take your order and then you sit and wait until you are called. The drinks were good and STRONG. Just the way I like them. I had 2 Painkillers #4 which were good. My GF had 2 Mai Tais which she said were great. The prices are reasonable, especially for SF.We had a GREAT time there and would HIGHLY recommend this quaint bar.

Fantastic out of the way place for great cocktails. Tucked away behind a Discreet facade. The bars are spread over three floors with bars at the top and bottom. Seating is limited and the place gets packed. Well worth a visit as the cocktails are fantastic.

Cool Tiki Bar
Sep 2018 • Couples
My husband and I were eating at another bar and mentioned to some locals we were going to the Tonga Room. They said we had to try this place first and we were glad we did. Typical tiki bar in that our Uber pulled up outside the address and we thought we were lost, no signage etc. But we found our way in, had some yummy cocktails and talked to some locals. Fun time!

Excellent mixologists-small and crowded
Oct 2018 • Friends
Excellent tiki bar. Highly professional mixologists that have specialized in their craft.

Drinks are fabulous but unfortunately many are not served in traditional tiki mugs ( too many people were walking away with them).

Tried the “Three dots and a dash “ and traditional the mai tai -both were perfect. Definitely leaving you wanting more.

Nicely decorated 3-story establishment but overall very small. Get there early if you want a seat. I was there at 530 on a Saturday and it was already standing room only.

Street parking only....lots available when I visited but don’t count on it being easy to find.

Smugglers Cove is about 2 miles outside of the main downtown area but worth the effort to get to it if you love great Tiki drinks.

I didn’t give it 5 circles because I like the unique tiki mugs offered at most tiki places and I felt serving in normal cocktail glasses diminishes the overall experience.

Wouldn’t know it was there but that’s part of it

Hidden away behind a commercial frontage is this great tiki bar, if you didn’t happen upon it in a google search or been told by a friend then you wouldn’t know about it but that all adds to the charm. Cocktails are second to none and don’t offer the bog standard tiki fare, they offer difference and originality. They also have a book if you can be bothered to make your own at home.
