Neighbourhood: Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighbourhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the country.

We walked in the famous Balmy alley in Mission district.
We were amazed by the wonderful and colourful murals, which allow talented artists to express themselves regarding over human rights and political abuses in Central America.
Balmy alley is the best place to spot the murals in Misssion district!!!

Don’t bother

No parking to be found in the city famous for no parking. This place is in a sketchy area to start with. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time or your life.

A treasure of art on an alley street of homes in the Mission District. The depiction of social justice is sobering and something worth seeing

Hardly it would take 15 minutes but it is worth viewing if you like art
Dec 2019 • Friends
We were not far from the street and decided to give the murals a look.
It was 10: am and the street was almost empty.
There are many inspirational art pieces and meaningful murals.
It is an entire block in which virtually every fence and garage door is covered with murals, some of them going back as far as twenty years.
Some murals depict modern political movements with messages about gentrification, greed, money and where the world is now.
We liked it.
Good line up of art, awesome short view, hardly it would take 15 mins but worth viewing.
We suggest to visit it on a brighter day and if you are interested in art

Diverse Artistic Styles
Nov 2019 • Family
The alley had many different styles of painting. There are many murals depicting Spanish, Latin and Native cultures. These are not graffiti murals.

Brilliant poignant, celebration of women, history & freedom
Oct 2019 • Family
Thankfully a friendly local pointed us in the right direction otherwise we would have missed it! Brilliant artwork in one street depicting history, freedom, struggles and the celebration of women. There are murals all over the mission District but this is the most concentrated. Worth the walk off the main streets.

Great Street Art
Aug 2019
There are a lot of street murals in SF and you should get a guide to all, or take a guided walking tour. It's ever-changing instant art, part of the local scene.

Mission District Street Art
Aug 2019 • Family
The Mission District is filled with street art and there are two primary alleys (dirty alleys) that are popular to drive down. The Clarion Alley and Balmey Alley tell tales of the gentrification of the area, politics, humor and simple entertainment pieces. There is something for everyone. Take time to drive around the neighborhoods and see so many other murals around every corner.

Beautiful and touching artwork
Aug 2019 • Family
We visited this as used to enjoy visiting something similar in Miami when we lived there. This is not as big as that but perhaps more authentic and the paintings contained more meaning, particularly in today’s political climate which I liked our children to see. The alley when we visited was clean and not as described by some of the other reviews. The nearby street is great for barber shops and cafes. Recommend visiting Temo’s cafe for lunch or coffee.

Amazing street art

Fascinating murals, love the street art which brings another dimension to San Francisco. Worth a detour from the normal tourist trains to wander around these streets.
