Interesting
Oct 2018 • Friends
This was the second bar on a night of wandering. It was recommended by a bartender from the first bar. She described it as "a cool weird spot", so curiously we wanted to check it out. The place is filed with various quirky decor, dimly lit and offered a mixed crowd. One of the bartenders had a nice heavy hand when making the drinks. Cool different place to check out.

Hidden Gem!
Oct 2018 • Couples
You’ll be hard pressed to find a better hidden gen than Specs. Engaging atmosphere/staff, friendly locals, history galore, and just all around fun. Definitely a spot to stop for a pint.

A pleasant surprise!
Jun 2018
We were told by our AirBNB host that this place is a "must see" so we went in. It's dark, especially after walking in from the bright sunshine. It's a very interesting place. Locals were sitting at the bar and there are lots of interesting items on the walls. What stories those walls tell. I'd go again!

cool place for a drink
May 2018 • Friends
We heard about this place so we went for a drink to try it out. The inner decor was weird and wacky San Francisco which i loved. Definitely eclectic. The beers were fine and priced appropriately. The only negatives were: 1) the Asian bar tender who was grumpy and didn't smile and 2) the local dude who was a drunken mess who sat beside us at the bar and dominated our conversation. Other than that, a great little spot.

Authentic North Beach Adventure
Dec 2016
Can't get any more interesting and cool than this favorite North Beach bar and museum. Dark, friendly, beloved by the community and those lucky enough to visit. A great beer, a nice wine, good service. Weird and wonderful!

One of my most favorite bars in the world.

It is a classic. Go get a drink and a hunk of that cheese wheel. In a changing world and rapidly "Evolving" SF, this place is a classic. Never change you SPECS!

Great little dive across the street from City Lights Bookstore
Sep 2015 • Friends
This bar is tucked away down a little alcove across Columbus Street from the City Lights. Great little joint, full of memorabilia and the bohemian denizens of North Beach.

Good cocktails, cold beer, weathered and friendly bartenders.

A San Francisco Tradition
Mar 2016
Specs is a bar you probably will never find. It's hidden a bit. And it's a treasure. Great bartenders who are fascinated with the history of this merchant martimer hangout of past. The walls and displays show the history of the seafarers dreams. I brought my son (over age) to this treasure to experience the history of the city. We were told there have been many multiple generation patrons visiting lately. So yes.....find this place...across the street from Vescuvios. hint...hint.

A cozy place to meet the locals
May 2015 • Friends
Just off to the Columbus in an alley, a large bar, a few tables, a bit dark, just right. The hardworking and friendly Lucy brings the beer from the tap. It's cozy, some locals are joining me. A few beers, wild talks and a Chinese love story at the end. I have to say good bye, I had a great time, it is hard to leave that evening.

Anti-utero
In utero my beating heart was so so driving, urging, really. That maddening creciendo has always pounded on, even after the birth cavity; through bicycle-skinned knees, first kisses and last hugs; through, I think, a confused and utterly mesmerizing emotional trip. Clud ump clud ump clud urumpm, with slight irregularity as if to suggest something more is coming. Yes, I know, as we all do, that coming and coming is inevitably death. But, there are moments in life when the beckoning hushes and we truly rest. Mine, it just so happens, has seemed dullest while drinking whiskey, eating cheese, and reading random postcards in the hull of the mighty ship, Specs. The anti-utero, and plain-ol good joint.

I haven't been back in 6 years, but I have written postcards to myself, sitting there six years ago. And to others, sitting there now. No stamps or pen to paper, but long mental reaches through time and space to peaceful sippers, sipping silently, quipping over the hugeness of it all. Or just getting sh$-faced on toddies.
