Paxton Gate Taxidermy class
Nov 2018 • Couples
I’ve always enjoyed going to Paxton Gate in Portland and San Fransico for fun, gift and books so I thought that if I was going to take a taxidermy class Where else would I go? My husband is an artist and he’d always wanted to do some taxidermy so we took the possum class a week ago with Geoff Vassallo and it was his expertise in teaching that made the class. So much so that we are going to take another one.

One of My Favorite Shops in San Francisco
Aug 2017 • Solo
I can't seem to stay out of Paxton Gate for more than a few days at a time. As a resident of the Mission District, I pass this shop on Valencia St. almost everyday, and it's like a tug of war to keep walking instead of entering the store. There's always something new and interesting to catch my eye and entice me to take it home: exotic stuffed animals, beautiful and unusual shells, stones and bones, beautifully designed terrariums, and exotic plants. My home is full of odd, bizarre and exotically beautiful objects, creatures and plants from Paxton Gate. I can never get enough!

For the bizzare and unusual
Nov 2016 • Solo
This place is for the unusual and bizarre. Looking for a raccoon penis bone? perhaps a bat skeleton? books on curiosities? making potions? This is the place for you.
Highly unusual and interesting items for unusual people in your life.
Well worth the visit.

You have to see it for yourself

It's weird, unnerving, bizarre ... and completely fabulous. From taxidermy items, big and small, from mice to moose, to skulls and bones, and framed insect specimens, Paxton Gate is a true treasure in The Mission. But it's not all oddities, there's also a lovely collections of plants ... especially succulents.

Paxton Gate provides a unique and inspiring shopping experience for any lover of botany and biology. (And those of us with off-the-wall decorating tastes.) This museum/floral shop holds my interest and inspires me for hours. And I always come away with unique gifts and treasures for my own home.

Fascinating Curiosities
Nov 2015 • Friends
What a delightful, unusual, vaguely unsettling collection! I could spend hours browsing and admiring the curiosities for sale.

You just have to see it!

Where do you start at this incredible, weird, freaky, awesome, scary, garden shop, gift store that's really, really odd and very cool?! Start from the moment you walk in, that's where! You can literally spend hours in Paxton Gate and still not see all the oddities throughout the store. Younger children might find some of the items a bit too weird but older kids can't get enough of taxidermied mice and glass eyeballs! Take your time and have fun....you just have to see it.

Mounted Mouse Heads anyone? If so, you've come to the right place.

Since I was visiting the pirate supply store next door, I continued my window shopping escapade into this nature store as it caught my eye. This is truly a unique destination. There are items in here I never saw or heard of before. For instance, I now know what a terrarium (glass container used for growing and displaying plants) is. Odd items such as large animal part fossils, human skulls, taxidermy mice dressed up as different characters like Little Red Riding Hood, and even a glass eye of a mountain lion await the curious buyer.

For a Parking tip, see my 826 Valencia Pirate Supply Store (SF) review on 7/11/2015.

Fix for the Queer at Heart
A sure fix for the queer at heart. This store's got everything from taxidermied animals, bones, fossils, steampunk stuff, eccentric jewelry/paraphernalia, and the rarest plants/cacti/air bromeliads.
