Cleaned up since last visit
Jul 2021
This tourist trap was very cleaned up since my last visit two years ago. Not sure where they put the homeless but they seem to be gone. Fun and vibrant place.

Interesting place - too much Weed!
Jul 2021
Loved walking all the shops at Pier 39. Many good restaurants and gift shops. Loved it. It was neat to see the seals sunbathing on the docks. BUT, the smell of weed and urine was everywhere. I know it's legal, but not everyone likes this smell while eating lunch!

Smash and Grab
Jul 2021
I enjoyed the area and the attractions, but we had two cars in the paid parking and they were both smashed and grabbed. So that was not fun and of course, the police don't respond, you just file a report on line. When we took the cars back, the rental agent said it happens all the time. We had SUVs so my recommendation would be rent something that they can't see if you have anything in the vehicle. Kind of ruined the whole experience.

We saw the sea lions and even though there were only about nine or ten, it was still fun to watch them.

One of the many places in US made famous and overhyped by good marketing. Nothing much to see and do other than the huge crowds.

Only worth it for the sea lions!
Jun 2021
We came to Pier 39 for dinner on our first night in San Francisco and I was not impressed. It was crowded, loud, and extremely touristy. It also seemed like a place where a lot of young kids went to hang out. The next morning we returned to see the sea lions on the pier. It was extremely quiet and the sea lions were fascinating to see! We really enjoyed watching them for quite a while.

Sea Lions are not around much in June/July
Jun 2021
There are lots of shops and places to eat here as well as street performers. We were most looking forward to seeing the funny sea lions but alas found out that they are not around much during June and July since they are out mating. There were just a couple the 2 times we looked for them.

Thank you for reviewing PIER 39 on TripAdvisor. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit and the variety of shops and restaurants. As you mentioned, during the summer months, the sea lions head south to breeding grounds on the Channel Islands, although a handful to a few dozen have remained throughout the summer in recent years.

Good at shopping malls go
Jul 2021 • Solo
Pier 39 is a shopping mall aimed at tourism. Don't worry about prices, because contrary to popular belief, prices are not generally inflated at Pier 39. This is not a shopping mall for locals unless you're coming for some San Francisco Bay Area art or nostalgia. There are a couple decent restaurants, but nothing you can't find anywhere else in the city.

As a San Francisco Bay Area local, I love coming to Pier 39 just to hang out. The term Pier 39 is often synonymous with fisherman's wharf.

Crowded but cute
Jul 2021 • Friends
So, crazy crowded. First note, so so crowded. But really cute, has a carousel and some rides, and most of the year you can see sea lions (it was off season in early July and we only saw one lazy fella). You also get a great view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge from one point. Lots of food options as well, from vendor stalls to fancier places on the top floor. Stroller friendly, ramps everywhere.

Lots to eat and see at Pier 39. Watched the fireworks at the end. Be ready, in July is was COLD and wasn't fully prepared. Sadly the sea lions weren't out this weekend.

Michele, thank you for reviewing PIER 39 on TripAdvisor! It is wonderful hearing that you enjoyed your visit to San Francisco and that you had a chance to spend time on our beautiful waterfront enjoying the 4th of July fireworks. Regarding the lack of sea lions ... From late summer (late July) to late spring (mid May), there are typically hundreds of sea lions hauled out at K-Dock (ranging from 150 to 600+). In June and July, most of the sea lions head south to breeding grounds on the Channel Islands, although a handful to a few dozen have remained throughout the summer in recent years. Until your next visit, watch the sea lions with the Sea Lion Webcam on our website. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
