WE stayed at a house in Makaha Valley which is near the mountains. Just spectacular views with the ocean very close.

The Waianae coast is a beautiful part of Oahu. Some of the world's best beaches, beautiful mountain(s), friendly people.

If you ever come to A building Makaha Surfside for a month this could be your view too. My wife and I have lived here for
10 1/2 years and we just love it. Do not come to the Surfside unless you love the local Hawaiian people. Lot's of young couples just trying to make it in an otherwise un-afordable place to live. Also lots of road noise and very small 400 sq foot condo. But oh the 5 million dollar views from the A building. A little bias because this is my home. So if you visit bring lots of Aloha and treat the staff and us locals with tons of kindness. A smile will make you family. Frowns not so good and you would ruin your fun. Meet on the beach Tuesday at sunset and bring food. Awesome group of people and oh the sunsets. Aloha.Tommy

First off, this hike is hard. By hard I mean using ropes, crawling on all fours, 45-degree grades, and 1000 foot sheer drop off hard. To get here, one must drive to Wai'anae and then take Wai'anae Valley Road to the end, where one will find a parking lot. From there it is about 1.5 miles of walking up a steep, concrete access road. The access road ends at Water Supply Pump House #2. After that, it is all dirt/mud until you reach the vertical portion at the end. The hike itself is beautiful and the view from the ridgeline are amazing. However, the grade never gets easier. You will be stymied by the vertical cliffs at the end unless you have rock climbing skills and equipment.

The waianae mountains are onthe dry side of the island. Best way to see them is by driving by. You can see them on boat rides, the beach and many other ways.

These mountains are so beautiful, and even more so if viewed from the water while kayaking or snorkeling off the Waianae Coast.

A top the mountains or anywhere above the ocean is a magnificent view. Hiking in Hawaii is one of my favorite things to do here. You never know what you may see... the birds and flowers and the scents of fruits! Not very touristy but a MUST if you go to Hawaii. This and many other hikes available FREE of charge and at many levels of hiking capabilities.
