Yes it's hokey, but it's so much fun. If you have little kids it's a must. If you dont, it's a treat anyway.

Our family outing to ride the Sugar Cane Train December 26th was a lot of fun for everyone. We had a 15 month old and an 11 month old, 4 parents and 2 grandparents. The bright colored lights, jolly Christmas music, the elf dressed staff, and of course a stop for Santa to come aboard and have pictures taken made it easy to smile and be happy. The ride was just the right amount of time for the round trip (up and back) train ride. The elves handed out juice boxes to the kids and a couple other holiday gifts to all children.
It’s a fun outing and we all enjoyed this amusement part, bit of history, and holiday spirited train ride.

The good news is the elf on our train was delightful and the Santa looked great. The bad news is that you mostly sit on a train that is going no where. It runs down the track a bit....picks up Santa.....take a picture with Santa.....all while sitting on a non moving train.....filled with antsy younger kids.....while the train cars are decorated with lights and garland, as you travel down the short track there is very little to see. Had to encourage my three-year-old grandson to look at the lights on the cars going down the road on our side of the train. We paid $50 per person ($250) since the cheaper seats were sold out. We were supposed to get a gift for the extra charge.....they didn’t have enough and told us to wait around for 15 minutes after we disembarked since more would be coming. After sitting for far too long on what we thought was going to be a delightful train ride, we left.

As of October, 2019, the Sugar Cane Train was not operating.
The tracks look in poor condition, the main station in Lahaina is closed and overrun by weeds.
Some activity at the engine shop, but it appears that it will not be operating for quite some time, I would imagine that a lot of money will be needed for service.

This looked like it would be fun, but the train is not running at this time. They are collecting donations to get it up and running again for Christmas 2019.

Well worth the money for the little ones. The trains was decorated beautifully. Full of lights. The girls were excited for a train ride and to see Santa. It's about a hour long ride. A small present is handed out at the end and milk and cookies are served as well. This is a seasonal attraction now.

Rose the Holiday Express Train this year after many positive feedback. The team is definitely keeping the magic of the holidays alive. From the joyous elves to Santa, the full experience was delightful. Well organized, the owner is on the train and brings a sense of place to the ride with unique touches that will set him above the crowd.
Will return next year over the festive season!

This. Was a great time for our family and young ograndchildren. The train was decorated beautiful the staff all dressed like elves. They did a very nice job with the train in and out. The staff were very pleasant and out going. We made one stop on the way to pick up SANTA CLAUSE witch was great . As the train was going Santa made his way through all the train sections visiting all the kids and families as he gave out wooden train whistles. After there was singing and milk and cookies for all. . It was a great time with family and Santa.

We'll be in west Maui while the Sugar Cane Train is running. Is this worth doing for a couple old farts, or is it mainly for kids? I mean, I know that there will be lots of kids, and we're not allergic to them or anything ;-) , but is the scenic ride worth our time and money?

It’s a short ride so the kids would be tolerable. My husband is working on the train and he seems to enjoy it.Its a unique experience, and this may be the last year,so I’d give it a go.Its a nice thing to do in an evening before or after dinner. I think there is something for everyone on this outing.Very festive.Hope you give it a try🙂
will the train be operational in may 2020?

I read a land use issue is standing in the way.If the petition gets signatures, and the land issue can be resolved,it may be running year round. But I’d say 50/50 at this point.....
