- Kathy LSaint Paul, Minnesota52 contributionsVisit this beach park,If you are willing to climb around on the lava rocks and cross some water you can see lots of turtles in the shallow waters or sunning. You can get close for pictures but it is physically a climb to the protected water. Worth it! There is a lifeguard and a small sand beach to enter the bay. Further out there is a current. Snorkeling is good. Many picnic tables.Visited February 2023Written 24 February 2023
- Jennifer LFort Worth, Texas71 contributionsFamily friendly local hang out!Definitely a local hot spot for the beach. This was a nice stop at a black sand beach. The waves were quite small and is definitely family friendly. The reef had some good snorkeling and water entry was easy. Facilities available (bathroom and showers). Parking can be tricky - we went in the late afternoon both days we visited.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2023

It is a very nice beach with black and green sand mix. Decent snorkeling but cold when you first get in.

The sand is black with a little bit of green. It's a great place to snorkel with kids. We saw so many fish. This beach has restrooms

This was very obviously a volcanic beach, beautiful clear water. There was a large turtle just feet away from where I was paddling, great photos. The water isn't very warm, it is the North Pacific, but pleasant enough.

From the parking lot, go right past the life guard stand and beach and through the rocky area. The turtles like to hang out in the tidepools to the right. Give them plenty of space. We counted 17 sea turtles during our visit.

Based on recommendation we visited and were not disappointed. Nice black sand beach with small entry into ocean. Interesting tidal pools with plenty of sea life. Definitely worth the visit.

Great place to snorkel. Black sand beach, very small, lots of shade, and some picnic tables. Water is rougher here but it is good for snorkling.

I am curious how far away from the ports for the cruise ships is this small find. Does anyone know of a black sand beach close by to the ports.

Not far and yes but they are about 45-60 minutes away by car. Kaimu has one you can hike to but it's no good for swimming, although it does have a bar and food and if you go Wednesday nights there is a big market and live music. If you want to hang out on a beach and swim, Kehena is a large beach great for swimming but I do recommend swim shoes of some sort and you may see some naked hippies. Both beaches are in the same area Kaimu is right by Kalapana and Kehena is along the ocean heading to Seaview from Kaimu. Aloha!

Is it possible to get to Richardson Beach Park by public bus?
Sandra

I agree with the first two answers above. You don't need to worry about a tour bus, the local bus does run there, but not on Sundays. Just look up the bus schedule online. Or when you get to Hilo you can call the bus company directly, or if you are staying in Hilo to speak with someone at your hotel's front desk.
