Big Bend Ranch State Park
Apr 2021
Located at the eastern end of Big Bend Ranch State Park near Lajitas, the Visitor Center is the place to get day use and camping permits (trailheads have self-pay options so no worries if you miss this stop). Most of the Visitor Center was off-limits due to covid-19 restrictions. Restroom facilities are open, as well as a.botanical garden with plants characteristic of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Great but we have been here before several times.
Nov 2020
I have been here several times before over the years. Due to the pandemic no one was allowed inside the building. You walked up to a window covered with plexiglass and a ranger talked to you answering your questions. The ranger gave out needed permits and collected fees. The outside display out back was closed but the restrooms were open. They had a good bulletin board display which answered most questions and let one know what was available.

Geographical history!
Oct 2020
The exhibits are closed at this time, but we have been through them before, and it is very informative. When all the restrictions are lifted, I would recommend a visit!

First Stop For the State Park
Nov 2019 • Friends
If you are visiting Big Bend Texas State Park the visitor center is a must stop. You can purchase camping permits, check in for hiking, grab map trails and learn about the park, including things to be aware of like hydration requirements, makes, scorpions, and tarantulas.

Beautiful landscape and sunsets and located near the Rio Grande and Lajitas, TX as well as situated across the water from Chihuahua, Mexico.

If you are not familiar with Texas, the trails, etc make sure to visit. The desert is very unforgiving if you’re not aware of risks or dangers. From personal experience, don’t just grab something when you are slipping down a steep rise on a trail, even the plants tend to ‘bite’!

Amazing sunrise!!!
Oct 2019
I always travel to the Warnock Visitor Center to experience sunrises in Big Bend State Park whenever I am in West Texas! They are a natural artistic beauty!!! And the staff at the Visitor Center, especially Michelle, is ALWAYS extremely helpful and friendly! One of my favorite places in Texas!

Great interpretive guides
Sep 2019 • Solo
Some parks have folks at the front desk who just need a job, the Barton Warnock has folks who actually live in the area and love it. The museum part has a ton to teach and the book store is great. This place is hands down better than the national park in teaching stuff about the area, and the outdoor garden is excellent.

Excellent museum for geology and history
Feb 2019 • Couples
This is at the Barton Warnock visitor's center for Big Bend State Park. The highlight is the museum exhibit which gives an excellent geological history of the park - great for untangling the many land forms, mountains, and mesas surrounding you. Also good for understanding Big Bend National Park. Ecology and human history are also covered, in slightly less detail. There is an outdoor desert garden as well. If these things interest you, budget 60-90 minutes to read through the exhibits. The visitor's center also has clean restrooms, the usual gift shop (although not quite as well stocked as the main headquarters in Sauceda), and helpful rangers. Check on current local conditions, especially water sources, and get a detailed topographic park map - even the short "easy" trails in Big Bend Ranch require a degree of navigation skill.

Don't Miss This

did you know the Big Bend Ranch State Park is the LEAST visited state park? it shouldn't be, because it's awesome. Learn what makes it unique at the Barton Warnock Center, which also is a "dark sky" location for seeing the stars at night. The park ranger on duty there is superb.
