The Foothills Parkway is a national parkway maintained by the National Park Service. It traverses the foothills of the northern Great Smoky Mountains in Eastern Tennessee. The 71-mile parkway's last section was completed on November 8, 2018. This road provides many pullouts with parking for...More
The parkway between Chilhowee Lake and Townsend was quite the scenic view, but now that it has been extended to Pigeon Forge in November 2018 it is double the scenic route. As we drove the extension my wife made the comment that wow this is...More
Even though the day we drove the new section of the parkway was rainy and foggy, it did not dissapoint! So beautiful and there are plenty of pull outs to take in the view. It would be great on motorcycles as well.
The last 16 miles between Walland and Wears Valley opened November 10, 2018. This bypasses Townsend but you can always drive back. The views are incredible. This is so worth the time to drive to see the Great Smoky Mountains and the valley of Townsend....More

Although similar to the Cherohala Parkway, this one will take a bit longer if you stop at some of the many scenic overlooks. Twisty roads, a scenic treasure, and moderate traffic is to be expected especially during "leaf peeping" season. Take the Cade's Cove loop...More

Take 321 North out of Pigeon Forge. I believe it is light 3. It takes you through Wears Valley. You will arrive at the light in Townsend in about 15 miles. Take a right and run it out a few miles and you will see the parkway to the left. It is marked with signs. Once you have run the parkway, it will dead end on 129. The famous Tail of the Dragon. Go left on 129 to run 318 curves in 11 miles. Have fun.
There are a few motels in Townsend, TN, which is just minutes from the Parkway and minutes from the entrance to the National Park. We can also highly recommend renting a cabin with Dogwood Cabins in Townsend!
