About Mountain and Sea Guides
Mountain and Sea Guides is based in Applecross running all year round adventure activity on the great sea lochs and mountains of NW Scotland. We also take our staff and expertise overseas running sea kayak expeditions in the British Columbia wilderness in Canada, the jaw dropping scenery of the Arctic Norwegian Lofoten Islands and in the warm Dalmatian Islands of Croatia. SUMMER - sea kayak, climbing, mountainwalking, gorge walking and more: Our summer season is split between a variety of sea kayaking trips, all aimed at beginner and intermediate level, and summer hill walking and mountaineering. We run shorter 2 hour and half day sessions for people who want a taste of the activity, to enjoy time together and to see the true beauty of the area. Alternatively, join a weekend introduction or 5 day long expedition for more experience and more exposure to Scotland's hidden secrets. WINTER - climbing, mountaineering, safety training, skills, mountainwalking, snowholing & we're still open for sea kayaking!: In the winter our attention turns firmly towards winter mountaineering allowing a year of seasonally adventurous activities from half day trips to full multi day expeditions. With some of the greatest challenges right on our doorstep, and guides who have been working in the area all their lives, you'll be guaranteed a week of exhilaration, learning, superb wilderness scenery and self achievement. GROUPS - young, old, all abilities, individuals, couples, groups of friends or family, workplace groups, university groups, military, fire, police: Our groups are made up of outdoor enthusiasts from all over the UK, Europe and further afield experiencing the best that Scottish mountain and sea based activity has to offer. We're fortunate to be based in the most varied part of the Highlands benefiting from the gulf stream and a geological history which has created skylines and seascapes which make Applecross and Wester Ross an outdoor adventurers playground. We can cater for groups of friends and families to single people who are interested in meeting new people and doing something unique with their leisure time. We've had adventurers as young as seven and as old as eighty and people with disability. Very few of our activities are unattainable and we can design programmes to suit any group based on our set themes on our various web pages. If you want to get a group of family, friends or a workplace group exclusively onto any activity experience all you have to do is email us, tell us what you'd like, how many days you'd prefer and some ideas around your aspirations - we'll get back to you with a trip design and costs. INSTRUCTORS - chosen for their ability to be safe, informative, friendly and able to work with a huge variety of people: Our instructors are qualified within the different disciplines demanded by each type of activity. As such we are governed by the safe practices of the national bodies the British Canoe Union and the UKMTA, AMI. Our staff have up to the minute wilderness first aid training and certification and Mountain & Sea Guides has been awarded the Investor in People Award twice, for our commitment to training, working practices and standards.

Me and my dad booked a half day taster of the kayaking very last minute while up in Torridon on our mountain holiday. Despite it being so last minute we managed to get booked swiftly with good communication. On the day Mike was thorough with the onshore briefing and provided some handy tips on how to kayak safely. On the water we got a taste of how challenging kayaking can be and how fun it is. A lovely change from climbing the hills and giving our upper body a workout! We will be back in the future.

A very enjoyable and well delivered kayaking experience at the stunning Applecross. Not getting full five stars, due to wife complaining about rinsing the jackets on the return to base. :) Good job and thanks Mike & Rob. Indrit

As a returnee to paddling I was seeking adventure, select remote locations, and people that shared my aspirations. My expectations were to see areas unknown to me, review my ability and understand a pathway forward. Mike far exceeded any expectation I had. Clear leadership, clear communication and a level of lifelong experience and safety that can only impress. Mike was consistent in his delivery to make our journey progress, to ensure safety, to widen experience, to share his enormous experience and to share his knowledge of both the immediate and wider area, including all aspects of sea kayaking safety and coastal navigation. Mike ensures teams work , to make the team work, and facilitates an incredible experience.

We had booked a full day sea kayaking experience. Mike was very informative and safety conscious teaching us basics on land before heading into the sheltered Applecross bay for some in kayak practice. In the afternoon we went for a short kayak in a different bay at Toscaig. We were disappointed that much of the afternoon kayak was spent sitting in a sheltered inlet being told where we were going wrong. And we were back on dry land by 3pm. We accept that the wind picked up and my husband struggled with some of the techniques, but we both felt "short changed" by the whole experience. Basically not enough time spent in the kayaks. We were lead to believe that a sheltered site for kayaking would be found. Whilst Mike is quire rightly exceedingly safety conscious, we were expecting a good part of our day to involve kayaking along a coast and enjoying the wonderful scenery and wildlife. This day felt far more like a land training exercise with the actual kayaking cut short.

As the veteran of a number of sea kayak / wild camping trips in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, I can recommend the Raasay-Rona trip (3-7 August 2020) as one of the best. The necessary skills and experience were fairly set out before bookings were accepted. Mike assessed the capacities of his charges, pushed them where needed and constantly adapted our programme to wind and weather. We all felt safe despite sometimes challenging conditions. One campsite in particular was an inspired find. The catered option is strongly recommended: simple but wholesome food helps keep the price down and was better than having to pack kayaks with gourmet delicacies. Mike's enterprise has driven him to devise trips not only in Scotland but in Croatia, Canada and the Lofoten Islands. Having seen what he has to offer at home, I hope some day to join him abroad.
