About
Historic Rock Ford was the home of Edward Hand and his family as well as enslaved and free servants and laborers. During the American Revolution, Edward Hand was Adjutant General to George Washington. Today, Historic Rock Ford is comprised of 33 acres at the southeastern edge of Lancaster City surrounded by Lancaster County Central Park. It offers guided tours of the elegantly furnished rooms of the circa 1794 Hand Mansion as well as the opportunity to visit the John J. Snyder, Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts which is housed in a re-constructed 18th century bank barn. Historic Rock Ford offers visitors a peaceful enclave for lovers of history, art and nature just inside the boundaries of Lancaster City. 2022 TOUR SEASON: April 1, 2022 to October 31, 2022

What a great experience! Our guide, Tom, was so knowledgeable and we learned so much about General Edward Hand, a key part of the American Revolution. We throughly enjoyed this beautiful property and learning about this important slice of history.

Tom our tour guide did a nice job explaining the history of the family and house. Very interesting and scenic. Took about one hour. Worth a visit if you like history and in the area. Have to book tickets on line thru yapsody. Small personal tour groups.

If you are a history buff the house and furnishings are fascinating. They have done an excellent job of restoration and have even left one room unrestored for comparison. The docent was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed our visit very much.

The old home is beautiful and authentic. If you are into history, this is a no frills stop but also holds periodic reenactments. I've never been to an outdoor weddin here but others who have say it is nice. The plantation sits in the middle of a large county park and deer and other wildlife make for a relaxing setting.

We had never heard of this plantation. The guide was knowledgeable and thorough. Didn’t know much about General Hand and was surprised to here he was with General Washington at the Battle of White Plains, down the street from where we live.

The guide was knowledgeable during this short tour. Everyone pays their entrance fee where the tour ends in the basement gift shop. You are unable to leave until everyone has paid the fee and for any souvenirs. The grounds are very nice for a short stroll.

Thank you for your review of Rock Ford. Generally, tours of the mansion are 45-55 minutes in length. Regarding the admission check-out at the end of the tour, upon your request, the guide could have opened the kitchen door after you had paid your admission and you could have exited immediately thereafter. We apologize if you were delayed in leaving and that caused any problems with your travel plans. During your stroll of the grounds, we hope that you explored our kitchen garden and other areas of the 33 acres which surround the Rock Ford mansion.

Found this place by researching trip advisor. So glad we stopped here for the guided tour. I am unable to post photos because it was prohibited... bummer! However, our guide was knowledgeable and the house was incredible.

Excellent tour of an elegant Colonial country home, in a perfect landscape in Pennsylvania Dutch country. The tour guide knew his stuff, and the story of Dr. John Hand was fascinating.
