We visited on the day we went to the East Lancashire Railway while we were waiting for our time for the Flying Scotsman event. This is a lovely little place with all sorts of vehicles. They have a one way system at the moment due to covid which allows you to be separated from people. It was a good hour or so to wander round. The volunteers at the door were great fun and so was the museum.

Amazing museum, really enjoyed my visit.

My parents & I visited the East Lancashire Railway for the first time last Friday & our travel tickets entitled us to free entry to this great attraction too.

This place has so much to see, lots of interesting history of the railway itself plus all the models & full size vehicles which you can admire too.

I especially enjoyed seeing the Dennis F12 fire engine, the tractors & traction engines & steam roller.

The staff & volunteers we met that day were very friendly & helpful too.

A truly interesting & highly recommended museum to visit if you're ever in the area.

Thank you very much.

Interesting collection.

Opposite the East Lancs station and free to enter so a great way to spend time between trains. A good collection of buses and vans with a few other large vehicles plus many smaller artefacts. Very welcoming volunteers on duty. Well worth a visit.

A very nice display of vehicles from way back, activities for adults and children, toilet facilities outside displays of railway waggons and a traction engine.

Well Worth A Visit.

We have been planning to visit the museum for some time but didn't have the time, when we visited the East Lancs Railway in July. Entrance is free but all donations are greatly appreciated. Though fairly compact, the museum has some fine exhibits, many of which I remember from my earlier years. The vehicles have either been lovingly restored or carefully preserved and all are in fine condition. There are good descriptions on each exhibit. It is a bit uneven walking around, as the floor is made of cobblestones. There is plenty to do for children and lots of interesting things to see and it is accessible for disabled people, with lifts and toilets. The only thing lacking is a cafe and gift shop; both of which would provide valuable extra income but I cannot see anywhere to put them, without building an extension, which would deplete the free parking spaces.

Great little museum. Definitely worth a visit. Interesting exhibits. Accessible upstairs and down. Really friendly volunteer staff. Best of all it's free (but donations gratefully received)....

Loved mooching among the fab exhibits

We went late on a Sunday morning and it was still quite quiet. There's a good range of exhibits, plenty of photos and information and a fab model train which a volunteer had working. Really surprised this is free as there's quite a lot to see.

A really good place, free to get in which I was surprised about they should be charging. Excellent volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge and are really proactive. My two year old loved it and enjoyed it that much we went round twice !
Overall I would say we spent around 2 hours in there, though you could easily stay for longer.
Disabled access available including lifts and toilets.
Railway cafe is opposite (up a flight of stairs) so close to getting a brew or you can venture into the town. Parking available on site also.

The Bury Transport Mueum is linked to the East Lancashire Railway and is just across the road from the Bolton Road station in Bury.

It is reached by a gentle staircase from the car park and there is a cobbled area outside the museum.

To visit I had to book a ticket but there was no issue when I arrived as it was not very busy and the gentleman said I could go in even though I was a few minutes ahead of my booked time slot.

There is history of the many different types of transport in the local area including road, rail and canals. There is also a small display about the trams which go from Bury Interchange, a short walk away.

There are a variety of vehicles on display including buses, a coach and a fire engine. There is also a big collection of traction engines. There was information saying some are in steam on certain days.

There was no gift shop but I would suggest going to the station in Bolton Street if you want any souvenirs.

First visit since 1986 and much improved. Exhibits late out for some interpretation as a goods depot- which is what it once was! Staff really friendly and helpful. COVID rules were there to help as opposed to oppress! Outside is an excellent approved official zone to photograph trains as they enter and leave Bury Bolton Street Station on the East Lancs!
Also a child friendly site! Worth the short detour from the steam railway and worth at least an hour to enjoy fully!
