This is one of the bridges that open for water traffic, but I did not have a chance to see it open. However, the bridge itself is looking interesting, and you should be able to see this from distance if you are hanging along the river parks.

It’s rare that I get a chance to see a lift bridge. I was fortunate to be walking along the waterfront and come across this long lift bridge. I watched two bridge operators performing some maintenance high up on the lift portion which was intriguing. The bridge itself made for some nice photo opportunities.

In our first time in Portland we ran along the waterfront and saw several bridges that connect East Portland from West. We stayed in the SW and on a couple of mornnings we ran the waterfront, over the Hawthorne Bridge for a really good look at the Willimett River. After crossing to the East, we thenn went on the river pathway back and made a nice loop run.

The Hawthorne bridge is special. It lights up at night and is fun to drive on..for most. For me, it's easy access to downtown and an easy way to get there. It's very Portland.

The Hawthorne Bridge is a truss bridge with a vertical lift that spans the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, joining Hawthorne Boulevard and Madison Street. Easily walkable or by bike.

I loved walking across this 100 year old bridge with its openwork fencing and steel construction. It's not exactly peaceful, being one of the busiest bridges in the state but
this bridge is an especially nice spot to get some good Willamette River and city photographs.
Be aware that bikes and pedestrians share a path so awareness is required.

A bridge is a bridge is a bridge - no big thing at all. OK to see walking or driving by but nothing to go looking for.

Arrangement of old rusty bridges paired with some newer ones, with the charme of those busy entrepreneur days when industries were booming. US-style. Industrial. All in all a nice overall place - good for running/jogging aling the river - walkways on both sides of the river. Cl8se to downtown.

We were reading about the Bridge and the system where the central section lifts to allow larger River traffic. Having strolled through the Waterfront Park and sitting enjoying the sunshine, with great timing a larger vessel hove into view. Accordingly we enjoyed watching the traffic stop, the centre section rise and then return to re-open. Quite soon after the Bridge was back in action a fire engine drove over with lights flashing, I guess the driver must be warned if a closure is in progress. The whole opening and closing system was fascinating and well worth a visit.

I believe there are 13 or 14 bridges that span the Willamette River and this one was one of my favorites. You can walk across and visualize how/when it was built and marvel at all the metal in it. We have a couple like this back home and it's always a joy to drive/walk across.
